I drive a '07 mazda 3 hatchback. it comes with factory installed 16" wheels with P205/55R16 tires. I am wondering if it is wise to throw on 17" wheels. Please advise, if it's a good idea and if not, what are the downsides of doing so. Also, what tires to use with these 17" wheels. I read P205/50R17 at tirerack.com. Please shed some light. Thanks.

205 50 17 is the stock size for a stock mazda3 17 inch rims. i don't see any harm in going 17's just a bit more pricey

16" tires are usually nominally cheaper, and you'll get better gas mileage on 16's.
the tire size you use will depend on the wheels you get. The wider the wheel, the wider you usually want your tire to be. Most members on aftermarket 17" wheels are stepping up to 225/45/17 tires.
