I know Mr Wilson has done this...

But has anyone with 08 speed3 style fogs (some model mz3 have the same) who have converted to HID gutted their fog light housing to remove the piece that surrounds the bulb.

I won't remove it if its going to blind people but I want the fogs to project more than they do. You can't even tell if your fogs are on from inside the car

Once this piece is broken out there's no going back

Afaik, that piece serves a purpose by reflecting the light back onto the housing thereby reducing the glare to oncoming cars. You can adjust the housing so that it projects the beam further down the road or maybe go with a 55W HID kit.
Due to the shape/ length of our hoods and unless you're short and can't see over the dashboard/ steering wheel there is not much you can do except try the suggestion I stated. Or sell your car and get a car like a mini or a fiat if seeing the fogs from the driver seat is really important to you.

I'll give you $5 and a 07 mz3.
The fogs work well.

So reading that other forum sounds like gutting the "glare shield" as they call it Is a bad idea

Will try to aim the housing up a touch

I don't have your same fogs but what exactly is wrong with your fogs?

They shouldn't really add extra light, but just reflect the lines when on.

I pointed mine up a little to counter act the fact that I have my headlight pointed so low ( so I dont blind people, hid's in reflectors).

What car do you drive? Mazda 3 doesn't have reflector headlights

Projector/reflector whatever the hell they are called.

Not the proper things for HID's. I didn't do enough research and put hids without altering my lights.

Gotcha. I've got the same (hid's in halogen projector) and I really don't think it's that bad. I haven't been flashed by anyone yet. Having hid's in your fogs is way worse for oncoming traffic.
