My car: Mazda 3 GT 75K approx, car generally in excellent condition.

I Had this happen to me yesterday.

I was driving around on Auto and began to stop at a red light.
There was one car in front of me. As I braked they seemed to be weaker.
My immediate thought was brake lines failed, but I was able to stop fine.
Next thing I hear the engine revving really hard. I kind of panicked, shifted to Parking
and shut of the engine. Restarted and everything was fine and still is.

I cannot confirm this but I am guessing I had accidentally hit the shifter to manual mode,
and since I was in 5th gear it stayed on 5th while I was stopped, hence the intense revving.
This is the only reason I can thing of, unless this was a malfunction where it shifted from Auto to manual mode by itself.

My main concern is did shifting to parking and shutting off the car in anyway damage
the engine or transmission.

I am looking for any weird noises but it seems ok.

Did anyone ever had this issue?

Thanks

When the engine revved did the car start to move or feel like it was going to?

Not at all.
As soon as I heard the revving, I had shifted to Park and shut off the car.

If the car moved I would have at least bumped the car ahead of me.

I had the issue.
Would not stay in D.. sometimes slip to N. Hard to shift.
Manual shifting mode would sometimes not work.
Especially when cold.

I did 8L transmission fluid flush (special Mazda M-V from dealer) pretty much fixed it.
Jacked car, and disconnected line going to radiator, and put it in gallon jug.. then started car and pump got about 1 L out every 15 sec. Stop, top-up and repeat to prevent it going dry.
Might also want to lube the shift cable to transmission.

Yes. He's probably due for an AT flush.

OP let us know progress...
flush alone fixed 90% of my issue.
Stiffer and not click/staying in D was happening especially when engine was cold.
