Starting to look at options before winter hits - I had a compustar 2way on my old 3, but really REALLY hated the turbo timer feature where it would shut off after you close all of the doors.
If you didn't shut all the doors before the timer stops, it wouldn't remote start. Worse yet, it wouldn't start in cold weather :P

Anyhoo, any suggestions?

go with clifford, and nothing else! lol, they are a greatr unit with lots of features, you can adjust the turbo timer settings to your preference.

http://www.clifford.com/Products/Product.aspx?ProductID=702

and also some of the clifford units you can program your factory key fob to it so you dont have 2 on your key chain

I know Viper has a turbo timer function, jonjon72 mentioned something like that before no?

clifford, viper, astro, and autostart along with a few other names are all made by the same company, directed electronics. so yea viper will have a turbo timer feature, but i still recommend clifford, i like their remotes, their features, and just an all in all good unit, ive installed lots and never heard one complaint.

Yup, currently have the Viper alarm and has the turbo timer function. With a manual transmission, you follow a button sequence and your turbo timer is good to go. You can set it up for 1, 2 and 5 minutes if I am not mistaken. Mine is set for shut off after 2 minutes. Walk away and your good to go. Your fob will alert you when the car shuts off.

Turbo timer is built in but you can choose not to set it up.

Currently have the Smart Start option where you can monitor, open/close your windows, GPS locate and start your car with your smartphone. Used it quite a bit last winter when parked at work. Whenever I was done work, would just start the car while walking from the building on those -15 degree plus days.

Maybe i'm using the wrong terminology. With my old CompuStar, once I removed the key from the ignition, the car would remain running but I essentially had 20-30 seconds to close all of the doors.

If I didn't manage to close all of the doors within the 20-30 seconds, the car would shut off, but it wouldn't be in "ready" mode, thus it wouldn't remote start.

I hated this "feature" with a passion... Are there any units out there that don't have this?

VIPER is the best way to go.

And are you saying you don't want to have the turbo timer feature...or you want a longer period of time to get out of the car?

Funny thing is, once you got out and closed the doors, the car would shut off. Not much of a turbo timer if it's only on for 5-10 seconds?

In any case, I'd like to have the new setup not be reliant on car door shut times to function properly.

Gotcha.
But those should be all in the program features.

Was the CS installed in the speed or your old 3?

It was on my old 3. I looked everywhere and couldn't find anything about that "feature" in the manual, and I asked my buddy who installed it (bestbuy head installer) and he said it wasn't a removable feature.

Hmm... Versus $550 and $400 for the same system, it's just under $200 for the same thing via an eTailer: Linky (http://www.ebay.ca/itm/VIPER-5704V-ALARM-REMOTE-START-WITH-PAGER-/111188051288?pt=US_Car_Alarms_Security_Systems&hash=item19e3530558&_uhb=1)

I'm all for supporting our local businesses and forum sponsors, but if they are indeed identical, why would I pay double (or more)?

It's $203 Canadian plus $15 shipping.

The fourm sponsors includes install plus you would still have to buy the module cause the key has chip in it.... So really you going to pay close to the same price.

That was just an example - I've found it cheaper elsewhere. If we tack on $50 for the bypass module, it sits at ~$300 shipped and taxes in.

Install is usually $150-200. Extra to program custom features

IIRC - DEI Warranty is not covered when purchased out of country. (Or from a non-authorized retailer).

Good point about warranty and installation fees. If anything goes wrong you can always bring it back and get it fixed.

Thanks for the heads up - I was trying to find out the difference between the 5901 that's on sale vs. the current model 5706V or last year's 5704V.

I asked, but was told it's essentially last years model with the shock sensor built into the controller unit... I'm not 100% sure that's entirely it.
