View Full Version : Cell phone companies rant!!

I will warn you off the bat this is a rant. Although advice from those in the know will help.
So I went to upgrade my phone and update my plan today.
Currently I am with Rogers and have been for 12ish years. My plan consists of "My 5" , 1/2gig of data, 500 min, 2500 texts ( I use maybe 200 a month), voicemail, call display ect ect. It costs me $86 and change a month all in.
I am constantly going over my data. Last month was $50 extra for it. So I was hoping to keep the same plan but upgrade my data.
No biggie right..... WRONG
They can't upgrade my data as they don't offer anything like that anymore. Tell me there "option" which is to get "unlimited" everything with 1 gig for $85+ tax and fees a month.
I don't need more minutes or texts or "enhanced voicemail" all I want is more data. And more data then 1 gig at that.
So looking for the best solution for me (and it's not like im attached at the hip to Rogers) I decide to look at bell and telus.
All 3 companies are offering the exact same options for the exact same price. What bloody use is that. To top it all off the reason they give me for the added cost is " you can share your data across all of your devices. " -_-
I don't have any other devices.
I can't use wind any ones like that as I'm to far north.
Sorry about the rant guys.

Call to cancel. Someone will call you back. Negotiate with those guys. Tell them how disappointed you were to be treated like that after 12 years.

Peter,
how bad is the Wind coverage up there, they have shitty coverage but with a amplifier sometimes it is acceptable.
Also has anyone in your family been with Rogers a long time? after 10 years of being a customer you can escalate it up to management and they will do WHATEVER they can to keep you on.
EDIT: says you are customer for 12 years. I would call a manger and have them look at all the money youve paid over years. They will give you a better rate if its possible
I with Rogers and my plan is talk and text and I have inlimited everything ( text, local calling, long distance) with 1g and I pay $55 + tax a month.
i was told i can add an extra gig to my plan for $10 extra a month

Pretty much when they changed 3 year contracts to 2 years, they bumped the price of all plans up.
This month was my last month with Rogers, first thing I did was port out the day it expired. I was on a 200 min, UL sms/mms, UL calling after 6pm, 1gb data, caller ID, 100 Canada LD min and My5. Paid $49.50 taxes in, I had to go through retentions a dozen times to get that plan. So as my contract was about to expire, I would lose all my discounts and credits, which would mean my plan was $89 a month, off contract. So I called Rogers retention a few times, and every single rep offered the same plan for $85 (like the one you were offered).
I ended up signing up for a Koodo $55 plan off contract, with 10% BYOD discount for unlimited Canada-wide calling/sms with 5gb of data. I still had to jump through hoops to get it, as this plan is only offered for Saskatchewan/Manitoba residents. Thank you RFD haha. Exactly^.
People complained about 3 year terms, so the big 3 decided to pretty much say fu&k you and pay out your ass for any plan.
Call and speak with the loyalty and retention department.
I currently pay $60 +taxes for:
500 min.
Free after 5pm and weekends
10 favourite
Call display and voice mail
Unlimited text, pic and video
5gb data
Canada wide calling
That's with Telus. I got the plan last November and have been a loyal and happy customer since 2005.
It takes one call to the right person for things to happen.
The key is to be nice but firm.
Do not yell or swear and take your time with the other person on the phone.
I know from past experience Rogers isn't the friendliest when it comes to customer service, but be patient.

Sorry guys stopped for a min and can't respond to anything.
I'm outside of wind map zone.
I have only ever delt with customer retention.
I cant even use the "I can get a better price elsewhere" thing because they are all the same.

Too bad you're outside of the Wind zone. I pay $40 a month for unlimited Canada-wide talk, text and data.
You should call and ask to speak to their customer loyalty department. I've found it's always worked better than speaking to customer service.
Tell them you've been a customer for 12 years and ask if they can make an exception for you. I've had them reimburse me for going over my data amount before. You can also ask if you can get a discount... but this might only work if you have either cable/internet with them as well.
Edit: Nvm, saw that you only deal with their customer retention. There's not much else you can do unless you hang up and call again to get a better rep who's willing to go out of their way to help you.

If you want I can email you a copy of my plan so you can tell them to match it?

+1
Wind is great if you are in their zones. I pay $53/month for 2 phones with unlimited everything.
They texted me once and slowed my internet to half speed for a month because I was at 27GB of data. (Internet went down and was tethering my computer and forgot and my downloads were going overnight :) )

Hey Peter... I'm a sales rep at a Fido store but I know how it all works. Just call and speak to someone in the customer relations/loyalty department. They hold more leverage with the plans than do the regular customer service reps (the people who first answer the phone) and the retention people. I'm not going to lie though, ever since the new CRTC rules have come into effect, ALL cell companies have become more stringent on their plans and what they offer customers. So you might have to work a little harder to get what you want but it all depends on the person you're talking to. Hope this helps buddy

That would be great. Doubt it will work but worth a shot. The GF has a great plan at 60/month she got 3 weeks ago as well. Perfect for me.

They are the only people I deal with usually. But they also seem a little more stringent on who they send through I even said "I'll go elsewhere then" and all I got was "have a nice day"

Thanks
I've now spent the last 20 min on the phone with Rogers and still on it took me 15 JUST to get over to customer retention/relations.
And so far it seems like they are still not going to be able to help. Ugh.

I used to be with Rogers for 2 years until they started putting random fees on my contract and not telling me when I'm over on my bill. When your bill is supposed to be 70 a month and then you find its 120 it makes you very angry. But I switched to Fido and I gotta say the difference is unreal. The plan they have saved me over 40 a month. And customer service has been good. Except when you apparently can't do shit all about a phone at the Kiosk.

This is turning into quite the story. I hope it all turns out to your favor. At least your constant calls will show in their logs, eventually tomorrow and hopefully with the help of aris' e-mail, it'll pay off. Stay persistent.

^ near impossible.
I asked about the plan I have (apparently called Saskatchewan 60) and if I could keep it after my contract was up or renew it again and was told "haha, good luck with THAT one"!

Jackal's right - these offers do come and go based on the way the market's going. Mine (before my employee discount of course) is $60, which includes
150 Canada-wide minutes (Not much of a talker during the day)
Free after 5 pm and free weekends
International text, picture & video messaging
Caller ID/Voicemail
6GB of data
Like I said - all depends who you talk to and what they're willing to do for you. I hear the retentions offers are more available towards the end of the month if the reps haven't met their quotas yet ;) haha

I understand the OP is outside of a WIND zone, but I can't believe more people in this thread aren't with WIND.
$40/month gets me:
Unlimited Data
Unlimited Long distance across North America
Unlimited Global Texting
All features like Caller ID/Voicemail/Call Waiting, etc.
Sure you go outside of the WIND zone occasionally, but the extra cost of using the phone outside of the WIND zone was nowhere near what I was paying with Rogers. My highest bill so far has been $53 and that was when I went to North Carolina for a weekend and left my data on (on purpose). Their US roaming agreement with T-Mobile is dirt cheap.

I once had a Rogers Data plan for $15/month... ( the guy at the rogers desk accidentally applied too many discounts than I should have had). Sadly, they caught on after I upgraded to my Galaxy Nexus and tried to recover their losses by overcharging me .... :flaming ... got on the phone and complained.... now im just paying the regular basic data plan.
Sometimes rogers is good... sometimes they are bad.... But in my experience it boils down to this:
Rogers: good product... shitty customer service
Bell: not so good product but better customer service
Telus: meh in both categories...

Actaully Rogers has excellent customer service... They are the only company that will do what they can to help you... Bell is worst all they do is pass the phone on to someone else... I've even had one worker hang up the phone cause their shift ended lol

It's the opposite for me lol, I find Bell easier to deal with. They always put me straight to customer loyalty/retention and always reimburse me for my troubles, plus give me extra discounts on top whenever I ask for it. Rogers customer retention reps call you bluff when you say you'll cancel with them LOL

This has been my Rogers experience.
They've also tried tricking me into re-upping my 3 year contracts in the past. I had one girl try and offer me a small $6 a month discount, but when pressed she finally admitted that this would start a new 3-year commitment...

I've alway talked highly about Rogers until now. My battery lately will drop like 40% within a minute so I call up Rogers and they figure my battery is toast and they say I will have to pay cause I'm over my warranty by a few days... I ask them if they can do something since I'm only over by a few days and their like No... Apple is very strict and they won't cover it .
I call Apple up and they did a test only battery by a email they sent and confirmed my battery was no good.... They told me that they will cover it under warranty because it's only a few days over and their sending me a replacement phone while mine is gone.

Whoever was talking to you must have been having a horrible day.
Ive had my run ins with people at rogers. But ive had run in s with bell as well.
Oh and for anyone interested in moving from iphone to andriod.
Make sure you look up the proper method to canceling your imsg. Otherwise it takes 45 days to recieve texts from anyone with an iPhone. Its a "known" apple issue and is next to impossible to resolve.
I actually have to have rogers reactivate my iPhone. Then call apple for them to cancle it. Then have rogers deactivate it.

Im really leaning towards koodo but cant do 16g if I were to stay iPhone, I could have rogers unlock my 4 for the time being. Rogers, and the others just have such terrible plans right now

I went from iPhone to Android in January and noticed that all my iPhone friends messages were still going to my iPhone and not my new Samsung phone.
To correct simply go into settings -> iMessage -> then turn the switch from "use imessage" "on" to "off"
Fixed my problem instantly.

Ive done that. And unregistered the product and my number from apple.
Still wasnt receiving them. Called apple and spent 2 hours with them trying to figure it out. After a bunch of security stuff they tried to send me a code so they could immediately remove me. Code didnt come through.
My case has been sent to some special department.
