I have a 2013 Mazda 3 GX 2.0 automatic. When I'm slowing down, and the car is downshifting sometimes going from 3rd to 2nd, or sometimes 2nd to 1st the RPMs will surge up about 500-750 RPM and then go down. Is this a result of the CVT or is this a problem?

cvt wouldnt do that? my understanding was cvt stood for Continuously variable transmission.... which is not really geared like normal. but i dont understand the new ones but going from second to first and seeing a big rpm spike would not be unusual by an sort in a normal car

I think that's just how it works o-o, even when you downshift on a manual, RPM will go up due to the gear ratios.

On my 2012 sky 6M ive had surges of power when slowing down, and going from 4-3, or 3-2. It pulls when i start to release the clutch pedal, and without being on the gas it will rev up. This has been a problem with the new sky transmission atleast from what ive read online. Mazda doesnt really have a solution, they reprogrammed the PCM or something like that and it helped, but it did it twice last night. You dont have a skyactiv do you cracker?

No I don't have a sky. But I'm sure the trannys are similar. I have to say i wish I had gotten a GT. My mom just got a 2013 2.5last week and the drive is way better. I don't notice any of the issues with my sedan when I drive her 2.5. The difference in the pickup, acceleration and gears from the 2.0 and the 2.5 is quite big to me.

I don't know where I heard our cars did? But it's good to know they don't, lol. The only reason this bothers me is that my old car had a tranny problem in its late years, and I sill have nightmarish flashbacks of how much everything cost lol

A lot of people think our cars have CVT transmissions for some weird reason lol. I think because when Mazda was marketing Skyactiv, they said that we get the advantages of CVT transmissions. I guess people misinterpreted that.
