I decided to get these tires as I have had a great experience with past Toyo winter tires before. Being from Quebec I've gone through my fair share of Winter tires and harsh road conditions.

A Bit about my last set of tires for my Mazda 3 GX:
My last set of tires were a bit disappointing Falken Espia EPZ. To be fair they weren't terrible but I would rank them middle of the pack. Not so good on Cold dry conditions as handling was sloppy at high speeds. Tires manged well in deep snow but I didn't feel confident at higher speeds compared to others I tried. Icy conditions were fair at best. Driving around Northern Quebec at -25C on icy roads with sand (salt does not work past -20C) proved to be a lot of work for the ABS, hence icy conditions were not so good for these tires.

Edit: Despite my luke warm review of the Falken Espia EPZ my opinion of these tires is that they are still far superior than any All Season tire in our colder climates. I chose these tires mostly based on budget as I was able to acquire these a very reasonable price. So it goes to show even the cheap winter tires are far safer than most if not all of the All Season Tires on the market for Winter conditions.

Current Set:
I wanted an improvement on all aspects of Winter driving and I was recommended Toyo GSi5. I didn't hesitate to jump on these as I had previously tried Toyo G0-2, GO-2 Plus and Garrit H/T. All of which had their faults and strengths, but mostly strengths. The

Conditions:
Road Surface: City Roads
Surface Condition: Wet but very little standing water
Temp: Warm 12C

Roads were fairly damp but very little standing water. My initial impression was that these tires feel heavy. The rubber felt very soft thus causing a sluggish effect when turning. Definite drag and lots of surface friction on asphalt. On certain dry smooth surfaces like concrete it sounded like tires were stuck to the concrete. I can hear this suction cup effect as the tires rolled. I don't know what this will do to my gas milleage. However I guess this is encouraging as I suspect these tires will fair well on ice.

Conditions:
Road Surface: Highway
Surface Condition: Wet but No standing water
Temp: Warm 12C

Entering the on ramp was a bit a scary as I had stomped on the accelerator to bring it up to speed on the ramp and was surprised feel some over-steer. This is not something I would ever expect on a front wheel drive car under acceleration. Highway noise is generally acceptable. It's fairly quiet for a winter tire. The suction cup noise fades and becomes more of a quiet hum. Handling was not stable similar to my old of Falken Espia where responsiveness would be delayed when make sudden lateral movements. However I did notice one thing different, over bumps the GSi5 would either absorb the bounce or transfer shock directly to the suspension, I'm not sure which. Where as my old Falkens, my car would feel like it's still bouncing and I would get a floaty feeling. So i believe the side walls GSi5 are stiff enough to transfer shocks to the suspension. Where as my old Falkens would have a softer side wall where by shocks would just oscillate through the tire wall structure and not transfer enough of it to the suspension to dissipate the shock. Anyways this is just purely speculation and my subjective opinion

Summary: These tires suck in warm conditions as but I have a feeling these tires may have decent qualities to handle the colder harsh conditions better than my former set of tires. But so far I'm not yet impressed. I will have to give it more of a chance as the weather gets colder. I'm going to Montreal next week, I don't expect any snow but I am looking forward to seeing how these handle in cooler temps.

I have the Nitto variant of these rubbers (Nitto SN2) and they've been so great for the low price on the 2008.5 Sport GX, I also installed them on our second Mazda 3, 2012 Sport GX. Perform well in all winter conditions: dry, wet, ice, snow, cold, mild, etc. A bit noisy, but a good winter tire will usually be noisy. Also very good threadwear. Already 3 winters on the first set, about 25% worn. Probably only 15-20k on them though.

Can't believe I paid 330$ for a set (downsized to 15" for winters).

After been on these tires for the last 1.5 months I have concluded that these are probably one of the best tires I've used for Winter conditions. I will have to admit that these tires did not impress me at first especially in warmer conditions. I would have to say these tires would not be suitable for temps above freezing as they feel soft and unstable compared to regular all seasons and even compared to other models of Winter Tires. Pirelli Winter 210's would be the winner in this department. One of the best I've tried for Highway cold temp driving. 2nd to that would be the old Toyo Garrit H/T (replaced by KX).

However during the past 1.5 months I have encountered various conditions from slushy, complete ice covered, snow covered, Cold Dry and Cold wet road conditions. Throughout all these conditions the tires have performed exceptionally well and noticeably far better than my previous Falken Espia. I can confidently drive under all the above conditions and know there is plenty of traction. The only condition I have not yet experienced is heavy snow fall.

Conditions:
Road Surface: Solid Ice or Black ice
Temps: Just Below Freezing

During the ice storm in Toronto when residential streets were ice covered the tires held up well with minimal slip and minimal ABS intervention. There was always an initial slip before the tires would bite in to the ice and regain grip. Almost as if the tires required the additional load of the weight transfer either under braking or cornering on icy surfaces. It is under these conditions where my old set of Falken Espia's would have struggled. Even when new the Falkens did not give me the confidence that the Toyo's offer.

Road Surface: Snow covered 5-10CM
Temps: approx -5C in the evening

Most notable moment was driving past a recent model Mercedes C300 with 4 Matic on Bayview ave near Pottery road. Drove confidently through the snow up hills around corners at slightly below posted speed limits. Then again despite this ability to handle snow I would at very least expect this from a tire at this price point. In comparison my old half worn out Falkens were also able to handle this and more as I remember confidently plowing through at least 15-20CM of snow during the one day of dumping last February in Toronto. So I look forward to seeing more snow to see if there is any noticeable difference with greater amounts of snow for the Toyos.

Road Surface: partially snow covered and Patches of Black ice on Highway 401
Temps: -4C wind chill probably -10-15C

At highway speeds approx 80km/h the tires held up well even across black ice. Most of the black ice and snow accumulation was built up this morning on the passing lanes. There was a noticeable delay in reaction on the ice as I wiggled the steering wheel and abrupt increases on the accelerator immediately broke the tires loose from the surface at highway speeds. ABrupt braking also kicked in the ABS. However there was always some form of traction to allow you to change lanes or even to slow down enough to get you out of the sticky situation. Lane changes across the barriers of snow outside the tire tracks were smooth and steady.

Generally these tires are excellent through all forms of Winter road conditions. Best to have these tires put on just before the bad weather hits. IMO the tires do not perform as well under warm conditions even under the ideal +7C when when most tire experts say winters offer better traction than all seasons. These tires are at it's best definitely below freezing point.

Also given this opinion I question how well these tires will hold up in the long term as I imagine the tire compound to be much softer and more malleable than most others which would indicate to me the wear on these tires would be greater than most other tires. I guess time and mileage will tell.

Nice write up! The GSi5 is a tire that's been getting a lot of attention. Always good to read a review from a similar car owner.

+1

having owned the toyo Garrit and G-02+ (and absolutely loving them!), good to see a real world review on the GSi5, i think these will be the next snow tires I go to.

I just realized something after reading back some of my old posts about tire reviews. It seems to be a trend that C300 4Matics seem to get stuck in the snow a lot.

I mentioned the very same thing in this post a few years back: http://www.torontomazda3.ca/forum/showthread.php?49075-Falken-Espia-EPZ-tire-initial-review&highlight=espia

I don't mean to stereotype but somebody needs to tell these Luxury car owners that all wheel drive doesn't do jack all when tires have no traction, they only hold up traffic for the rest of us.

pretty good segment on these tires and some good overall general info.
he also mentions that AWD and other fancy technology doesn't mean much if you don't have good traction!
