Im a little confused about an electrical connection in my home.

The back story doesn't really matter but well just say tool of a contractor thinking you need 9 50w pot lights to light a small hallway. None the less.

I am connecting a push style rotary dimmer switch, no biggie done it many times. Purchased a 3 way dimmer as the circuit has 2 switches.

What im hoping to achieve is the dimmer can dim but the on/off can be controlled via either switch.

What seems to be happening is if the dimmer is off the other switch wont turn the lights on. It dims fine and the switch can control the on and off but only when the dimmer is turned on first. (Both dimmer and switch must be in the on position unlike if its just 2 switches. One can be off and the other one will still turn the lights on and off.)

Can this even happen.

Nvm. The diagram threw me off. Got it working now.

Lock it up

Don't worry you'd be surprised how many electricians I've seen get stumped on 3 way switching let alone 3 way dimmers.
