Do you think its worth anything?

It came from the waterloo distillery, and still has all its seals in tact. I know for a fact it sat in a cool dark basement for the last 48 years, because thats where it was found, covered in about 48 years worth of dust!

From what I read online, it'll have a different flavor than todays crown royal because back then they were done in different small batches, and each of the many distilleries across canada had different flavors. currently the high end crown royal XR comes from the last batches from waterloo as it had a distinct taste/aroma.

However, I think I read once whisky is bottled in glass, it stops aging - So its not like a 50 year old bottle of Port or something that gets better with age.

Any whisky enthusiasts on the board?

I'm just not sure if I should open it and enjoy... or see if I can sell it.

well, I've got an open bottle of crown at home - maybe I'll have a couple of my friends over and do a sampling. If I could get 100 bucks for it i'd sell it, but its looking like thats not the case so its worth it to give it a try.

If you have the time, turn this to your advantage. Post a pic of it on crown's fb and twitter. They will respond, and with the buzz, you might get yourself some more free holiday whiskey coming your way. Or be invited to do or get other free stuff once PR gets involved lol

I'd keep it. I'm not a Crown fan, but a bottle this old probably dates back to when it tasted good.

This! Social media is almost paying off these days.

I did win an Ultra94 gas card from their fb page last week for instance :D (not a TM3 one or due to assoication)

Bolded for correctness.

When you hear of a 12 year old (50 year old) etc. whisky this refers to the time in the cask. Once bottled those years stop counting ;)

That said, I'd do a cursory search to see if there are collectors of old alcohol (people seem to collect just about everything these days). If there's a market for it and the price is right... I'd sell it. If the market doesn't exist, drink up. Personally I'd also buy a new bottle of Crown Royal to see how the changes in manufacturing over the years have affected the taste.

On a side note: For any Single Malt whisky drinkers out there, try and get your hands on a bottle of Nant. It's a small-batch whisky produced in Australia that I particularily enjoy.
