View Full Version : Has anyone cut a hole to install speakers in the rear of a sedan?

I was wondering if anyone has cut a whole in the plastic (just below the rear glass and near where the child seat harness clips are) and installed 2 speakers in a sedan?

I find that the position of the speakers in the door, in the rear, doesn't always produce the best sounds.
Just curious; this is not high on the mod priority list.

Happy New Year!

You'd also have. To cut through the sheet metal and cross brace....

+1. Not worth it IMO.

Rear speakers are pretty much worthless anyway in term of staging.

Which is pretty much the reason car-makers stopped incorporating them in cars.

Add tweeters in the top of the rear door pannels

I was actually considering mounting a sub there. If you look in the trunk there's a round bit stamped into the sheet metal which looks likes it would fit a speaker/sub. Found this blog post by a guy who did that: http://purefinity.blogspot.ca/2010/04/2010-mazda-3-rear-deck-subwoofer.html

Thanks for the responses/suggestions. The tweeters on the top of the rear panel sound interesting. I can't picture it, at the moment and will have to look more carefully tomorrow.

ive done it once in my old 06 gt ... its a pain in the ass but turned out really good .... but youll have to put in some kind of bumper or something to blanket between the plastic and the sheet metal otherwise the weight of the speakers will give you an annoying rattle when you drive

and you have to reroute all the wiring from the doors ... also , i woudnt put a sub there , even with the blanketting or bumpers it would probly rattle the shit out of the plastics ... on top of that you woudnt be able to have a proper enclosure

You'd use a sub designed for infinite air, and the trunk would be your enclosure anyway, even though it would be huge. I figured you could pack it tight enough that the plastic couldn't even move. Eh I'll definitely post a thread if I ever get around to doing it

After reading the post by purefinity I'm really considering picking up a TSSW841 and using a old clairon APX640 I have sitting in the basement. The sub the its requirements are rather "cheap" from the research I've been doing so you could get away with some extra punch for about $250 if you don't have hardware.
