Curious if there are any hardcore home entertainment buffs on here?

What's the most you'd be willing to spend on a tv?

Anyone eyeing the ultra 4k tvs?

Tv alone I don't think I would want to go over $3000...but I could be persuaded otherwise

SomeGuy
01-11-2014, 12:11 PM
Not yet time to do 4k as there is no content really available.

I would say $1000-1500 is the sweet spot right now on 55-60" tv's, anything more is diminishing returns.

loki
01-11-2014, 12:17 PM
There are no returns. It's all a waste of money

If I'm gonna waste money I want the best

Huh? Someone else paying for this? Getting it from points?

Whatev, Samsung 6 series is plenty IMO. I can't imagine my viewing experience would be any better with a more fancy tv.

No I'd be paying for it

I got a Sony 47" for 1300 and boy is it nice. Sony keeps it's value more than other brands I find.
A lot of "4k" TV's are actually mislabeled as they are 3800 not 4k,so be careful of that.

The OLEDs look pretty sweet. Unsure as to their future though! 4k looks awesome but really expensive and lack of supported content. They all "upscale" but that is a steaming load. In a few years 4k will be affordable and the content will be there, right before 6 and 8k come out. Right now you can get a pretty good tv in the $1000-$1500 range that can tide you over for a few years.

be aware of the difference between UHD and 4K, hyperion touch on it. There may be mislabelling used but the aspect ratios are different. UHD is 16x9 or broadcast and 4K is wider and truer to cinema. TVs under 55 inch will not really benefit from the extra resolution. 3D TVs may be on the way out, seen as only being sold because they were top of the line. I paid 1100 for my tv, 55" smart tv, no 3D. I enjoy it but it's the whole experience, without a good sound system, its not worth spending extra money on a better tv.

I wouldn't buy a TV for more than 1000 +tx. You can get a hell of a TV for that price, and I never see a reason to have the latest and MAYBE greatest thing for triple the price, when it will be normal price (<1000) after a year or two. Also, when expensive things break, you're screwed.

Been using a 46" Samsung D6000 for 2 years and I couldn't be happier. Paid about 750 for it.

Get a good sound system with the TV. A good sound bar with a hard hitting sub is noice.
So $1500 for TV and $600-1000 for sound system. Winning combo!

Panasonic blu-ray player (didn't like sound from PS3)

Did you check the settings for the ps3? If you pass the audio through to the receiver via hdmi, or optical, you'll get the same sound as the Panasonic (assuming you've set it to pass the audio through). It's digital. If one sounds better than the other after you've set them both to pass-through, then it's all in your head.

I've got a good sounding system on a budget... and that Budget was pretty much free.

my dad spent a boatload of money of KEF speakers and an Onkyo Reciever in the late 90's... and now that they've moved up north my mom refused to allow him to "clutter" up their new place (no basement)

I reaped the rewards - Problem is its a hodgepodge of outdated/improper equipment - But its all high(ish) end stuff... But since its older theres no HDMI - so things are Piggybacked/routed in different directions by different processors....

Onkyo - DS-777 receiver
Sattelites - KEF Bookshelf speakers Wall Mounted (full range) Not sure of model. They are powerful but sound OK. (bit muddy - lacking treble... but they do the job)
Main Stereos: The Original Mirage speakers. Like... the FIRST (circa 1979 - New foam surround in 2008). I can't find anything about them, but for mids, vocals and treble its like sweet sweet honey, but clear as glass. They don't handle bass amazingly well but they sounded so much better than the athena speakers I had before.
Center Channel: A bookshelf speaker - Athena Technologies AS B2-1

Subwoofer is actually from a Z-5500 Computer speaker set... They are amazing computer speakers, and did the job admirably as a home theater system... One Which I slowly cannibalized and converted into my current setup. it was fine for my first 500 sqft apartment, but as time went on (and my dad kept buying new stuff) I slowly replaced it with his leftovers.

TV is a 46 inch Samsung - had a 40 but my dad just got a new 60 inch so I traded him my 40 inch Cold Cathode LCD for his LED LCD. Good trade. He now has a 40 inch TV in the Bunky. (aka where I sleep when I go there)

Since the receiver is old, it doesn't handle ANY of my video - it has S-VIDEO and RCA inputs for video only.

Ive got:

Wii Component-->Samsung TV
PS3 HDMI--Samsung TV
PS3 Optical --> Onkyo Optical 2 IN
PC DVI>HDMI -->Samsung
PC Optical --> Onkyo Optical 1 IN
Samsung TV Stereo Out --> Onkyo Video1 Input
Onkyo Optical Out --> Z5500 Subwoofer Optical In
Onkyo Subwoofer Pre-Out --> Z5500 Subwoofer Center/Sub Channel (it won't send optical data when I'm listening to records via Phono Input)
RCA Turntable with Ortofon 2M Red Stylus --> Onkyo Phono Input

There are two benefits to this setup:

Its very controllable - the subwoofer has its own dedicated remote
It was the closest I could get to "free"

The big con:
Megan doesn't have a HOPE of learning how to use it, and calls me every time she wants to watch TV (its our only TV)

For that reason, I'm seriously eyeing the Onkyo TX NR626 at best buy...
http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-CA/product/onkyo-onkyo-7-2-channel-3d-ready-network-receiver-with-wifi-and-bluetooth-tx-nr626-tx-nr626/10252923.aspx?path=3d9d50f5ab448af0a1cda6b6371cf7f 3en02

It has everything I need. Its not nearly as powerful as my DS777 (135watts RMS vs 95 watts) I probably don't need that unless I'm REALLY pushing the mirage floor speakers. But, its the cheapest most full featured receiver i've seen with a phono input for the turntable.

TV: 50" LG Plasma PK550
Audio: Onkyo HT-S3500 Home Theatre System
Player: PS3
Inputs: All through HDMI
Remote: Logitech 650

Happy with the setup which I got 3 years ago. The audio is a bit lacking but nothing to complain about.

For those of you with those Panasonic Plasmas, hang on to those. When I bought my LG, the Panasonics were out of my budget. Now that they are within budget, they have stopped making Plasmas :(

Got a 42" Panasonic Viera in the master bedroom and fricken love it. Best plasmas on the market when I got it. Connected to a Rogers Nextbox and Sony Blue Ray player

Got the same 52" Samsung plasma as Thrizzle in my living room on Boxing Day a couple years ago. Not as crisp as the Viera though - but still no issues. Connected an XBoxONE and Rogers HD Nextbox - Running Polk Audio sound bar with wireless subwoofer.

The man cave has a 100" projector screen wired to a 5.1 Polk audio surround sound system. Not an HD Projector - but still clear enough for the "wow-factor" home theatre experience. Currently only running a Sony PS3 to it.

Kids rooms both have a 32" Toshiba LCD - got em for under $300 each and are wired to cordless headphones so I don't hear the gibberish of "monster high" and the voices of that whiney little bitch, "Cailliou"

Imo Calibration is great if you have perfect control over your environmental lighting, but for the majority of us it'd be mostly wasted.

My TV has 3 modes. Dynamic, normal, and movie. I tweaked them all to my own preferences. I use dynamic when we have people over or the TV is just on as background. Lights all on, fireplace etc. Normal is when megan and I are watching something together, casually with only a few of the lights on. Movie mode is for a dark room. Contrast and brightness are lower, black levels weaker and the backlight is low. Gives the most lifelike picture and I'm really happy with it... but again super low light levels in the room. With the lights on you'd barely see anything.

I have been a home theatre nut for quite some time. Most of my components are older pieces but I was able to add some new pieces this year.

TV: Samsung 55" D8000
Receiver: Denon X4000
Front Speakers: Paradigm Monitor 11
Centre Speaker: Paradigm CC-390
Surround Speakers: Paradigm ADP-450
Surround Back Speakers: Paradigm Atom
Subwoofer: Paradigm PW-2200
Blu-Ray Player: Oppo BDP-93
Universal Remote: Logitech Harmony Ultimate
Lighting: Lutron Maestro IR
HD STB: Rogers Netbox 2.0
Consoles: Wii U, XBox 360, PS3, Xbox One, PS4

Swapping out the receiver made a whole world of difference. Thanks to the Audyssey MultiEQ XT32 processing, movies seem livier, fuller and richer...it's difficult to explain. Suffice it to say that movies are more enjoyable now than with my previous receiver (Onkyo TX-NR709).

Apple TV

This is what I have so far. I've already pre-wired the rears but I haven't bought any speakers for it yet. It's a slow growing setup but its good enough for now. I think with my tax return I'm going to invest in either a 60" plasma or a 1080p projector. I've got a couple sets of these when they were on for $25 lol one pair is my surrounds, one pair is in the garage.
Fronts are some cheapies from radioshack a decade or more ago "Merek" brand.
Center is a random cerwin vega I got on kijiji
Receiver is a sony 5.1 that was on sale stupidly cheap
Sub is a paradigm that I got for $20 at a garage sale
Sub amp is an adcom gfa-545II that I traded a cheap mixer for
Have some bass shaker pro's in the couch too

Hodge podge of stuff but does ok. Samsung 46" 6300 LED TV, HD Box, PS3 and Asus O!Play for sources. Logitech 650 remote.

I already have a Pioneer 5.1 receiver but it only had I think 2 hdmi inputs or something stupid, so I also bought the Onkyo (which is for sale in the FS section lol) which expanded to 7.1

But I always liked the Pioneer amps and found the Onkyo underpowered so switched to the Pioneer SC-1228-K

I've had a Yamaha for the past few years and it's quite nice. I'm normally not fond of those effects like Dolby prologic or whatever, but Yamaha has a kick ass system.
Worth a look, even if it's a buy and return "test" at home.

Dont worry, the money they make is ridiculous. always bargain as much as you can for the home theatre stuff. they do have some great sales sometimes. i got my RTI A5's for 400$ on boxing day cause of a **** up. regular 1200$ at the time

i work at Canada computers when we first started selling home theatre stuff, i was looking at the Denon AVR 990.

we had it for 1200$. FS had it for 1800$. my price was 600$

that goes to show you a bit. and im sure FS gets them cheaper then CC does as the bulk they buy compared to CC. and 600$ is still making a bit of money off of me.

I worked at FS for 2 months and most of those 2 months were spent with me checking how much markup was on everything. I think the most mind blowing was a $200 MONSTER hdmi cable...it was $14 at cost +10%. Also the Klipsch RF600B towers were $400.

To be fair to stores like Futureshop/Bestbuy, it costs alot to run these stores and just to keep these items in stock the way they do. So they have to sell for what they do, if not these stores would not exist because it wouldn't be profitable

How do you run speaker wire to the rear speakers?

I don't really want to go under the carpet to the back wall. Is it okay to go around the room tucked under the baseboard? It'd be about 30 or 35 feet.

You can buy these in different widths to handle various gauge sizes and they are also paintable. Also you can (with more cash) buy flat wiring in various gauges, which some are paintable too....I upped for the flat wiring; easier and cleaner.

Most common mistake is to hang the TV to high. By the looks on the picture that TV is too high. You don't want always looking up when you are sitting on the couch. Its should be at the eye sight (so in the bedroom you do it higher if you watching it on the bed). This is mine: http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160313/4dee1328133b5525c2b3fee2f9cd388f.jpg

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003HB6XPU?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage

the one i got in the GTA is similar, so its probably not worth to buy it in america.
And if your'e worried about it being strong enough, what i also did was instead of just putting it straight onto the wall was mount it to a 3/4" plywood board teh same size as it. I was able to support myself off that board with my finger tips and since i defniitely exceed the mount limit, should be good to go. Also gave me that little extra space to be able to finagle back there with connections and whatnot

Router and modem easy to access if i need to restart

mounted the power strip and my garage door opener MyQ gateway above the mount as well
http://drive.google.com/uc?export=view&id=0B3eycRJGDrBTNGI2ejhnQlkxSTQ

finally ran an new outlet behind the TV so i can get a nice clean open wall. we don't have cable and i didn't want a shelf for just the xbox so i ran an HDMI cable to the basement, across the ceiling and up behind the couch. That way bluray/video games are able to be used without getting off the couch. as far as sound, we just went with a sound bar here since we didn't need anything fancy. The basement is where the rest of our games and most movie watching will take place.

maybe we'll do a flat fireplace underneath or something..

and the basement. This one is only 55" but we sit a little closer down here so i'm happy with it. I like converting to 3D and playing games, especially Forza, obviously not mind blowing visually but definitely fun

It's so new that I never even about it, lol.

I think having an accent wall with a darker colour looks really good since I have it my family room, but I might change the colour of this wall in a couple of years when I get bored of the same look and get a bigger TV.

You should change it to darker grey, darker background help bring out the colours in the TV.

The setup(s) since we got our place back in November.

The living room

http://i64.tinypic.com/2it20jo.png

55 SONY LCD - wall mounted, non moving bracket
Pionner VSX-824K
Fronts - JBL Northridge ND310 II Towers (Fronts)
JBL Flix20 Surrounds (Rear) + Center
Sinclair Audio 10.3 Powered Subwoofer (3 subs in one) #theNeighborsLoveMe
Chromecast
HDMI cord ran from office for PC Monitor (KODI/PLEX)

The ManCave (my garage)

In the summer, we will watch baseball in the shop :0

http://i64.tinypic.com/fcikj.png
46 Sharp Aquos - Non moving wall mount (that needs to change)
ONKYO 5.1 Surround Reciever - Cannot remember the exact model, its an old beast of an amp,
Polk Audio RTIA1 Bookshelf Speakers
Acoustics Labs S10ETH 10" Powered Subwoofer (yes a powered sub for my shop :))
XBox 360
HP Powerbook for Media Access

I need to score another set of speakers for the garage so I can setup 5.1, I have an extra center channel I can use.

Ive lived in my house since November, the neighbours both beside me and across the street have felt my music, I do turn it down when its time.

I also just scored 2 brand new pull down screens from some High schools that are getting rid of them, they are a decent size, so 1 will be hanging in outside my rear garage door so we can do movie nights outside for the kiddo and his buddies, just looking for a cheap projector.

The 2nd one will go in the bedroom, no room for a TV, but I can definitely hang a screen from the ceiling.

Also note I bought those JBL Towers instead of my first car , when I was 18(14 years ago!) , so that goes to show what looking after your stuff does.

My dad has also been a DJ for over 30years so Ive been into audio since I was like 7 or 8, I had a hifi in my bedroom when I got my Nintendo ;).

If it's 'B' stock they definitely need to advertise as so. There is a huge mark up on speakers from manufacturer to dealer. When I worked for API International I was getting most 'B' & also select 'A'stock at 30-50% off list. But this was way before online sales.

My friends parents (who live just around the corner from Deadmau5) have a multi-million dollar home.

She built a million dollar kitchen + wine room, so he built a million dollar theater in the basement, Ive been lucky enough to be there quite a few times. Ive never snapped a pic of the components room but I did get one of the screen.

http://i66.tinypic.com/2dt7mty.jpg

The room is built to replicate an actual theater, power leather recliners, HD projector, the room blocks all cell signals so there is no distruptions...Its a thing of beauty.

Next time Im by there Ill snap some of the equipment they have.

Yes, 2 now!

A 3.5 year old and a 2WEEK old :D

I play Gears of War4, but don't play in front of the kid, as Im anti-gun and violence with him.

However if I load Forza 6 and give him a controller he will attempt to play, hes starting to get the hang of the it! My 360 is modded and I have ~250 games for it, so once hes a bit older and understands what hes doing ill let him have at that.

Wife and kids go to bed by 9 usually, so I get some time to myself to hammer out a few rounds.

GoW on surround is awesome,.

I loaded up Forza for my dad, gave him the Ford GT and let him hear what the surround sound is actually for!

Getting a budget setup for my great room (main floor) together...

- Already have a Samsung 6 series 55" 4k HDR TV
- Already have a Logitech Harmony 650 for remote
- Receiver came today, a B-Stock 2016 Denon AVR-S920W...only $400, was in perfect condition and still has same amps as the 2017 model and most of the important latest features...7.2, Atmos, DTS:X Audyssey auto adjustments, 4k, HDCP2.2, HDR, etc.
- Speakers found a place selling Klipsch RP-160m, pair for $450ish (they're regular $850 pretty much everywhere). Should arrive any day now.

Don't have space for surround channels, so it'll always be a 2.0 or 2.1 setup (will eventually add a matching Klipsch sub most likely). Going to also add speakers out on the deck off the zone 2 on the receiver. Receiver/TV work so well together the ARC and HDMI control channels, pretty slick little setup.

Been a while since I've bought any new audio equipment, so it's been kind of fun. My other room I have a 5.1 setup but it's all old (10+ years) mismatched stuff, that I imagine will be up for a replacement down the road too. Will likely move the old stuff out to the garage.

No room for dual subs.

I will probably get the Klipsch R-110SW or R-112SW to match the Reference Premiere speakers, I'm not really interested in looking at other brands when in this case I want a matched setup that looks good in the great room. This isn't my main HT location, so it doesn't have to be the perfect setup, just something to enhance TV/Movies and be able to listen to music while cooking/entertaining.

The R-112SW is rated 24-125hz +/- 3db...plenty. The R-12SW which is the lower end big box store "reference" line is a steaming pile of turd.

The RP-160m's came at lunch time today, hooked them up briefly and had a quick listen...they sound superb and actually extend fairly low with a bit of bass. More than I expected out of bookshelf speakers, not to be compared to full size floor standing speakers or a setup with a sub, but actually decent for music.

You could pick one up for a fraction of the cost, and its top quality, I know I built them.

In frequency testing, and in most cases these actually went below 18hz.

I already have a massive home built 15" sub in a box the size of a small desk with 1800rms of QSC power behind it that plays down below 20hz...I know what big subs are like. The thing is, you need source material with content that low and yeah some movie explosions might get down there but honestly for 99.99% of listening, especially music, even getting down below 30-40hz is plenty.

And AGAIN, this isn't my primary HT, it's something that needs to be aesthetically pleasing and just decent enough. I don't need an SVS PB-16 Ultra to go with a little set of 6.5" bookshelf speakers for listening to background music or tv shows around the house.

Old pic from when it was first built probably 10-12 years ago, it's down in my basement not hooked up at the moment. It has a Resonant Engineering 15" HC driver in it rated for 1200rms but takes every watt of the QSC RMX1850hd without a problem. The enclosure IIRC is somewhere in the 5-6 cubic foot range, tuned to 25hz. Built out of 3/4" MDF, internally braced, with a double thick (1.5") front baffle. Weighs around 150lbs (remember, no internal amp).

I used to built a lot of subwoofer enclosures back when I was in school...was fun.
