So the question that I pose to my fellow TM3 members, I have the opportunity to trade in my 2010 MZ3 GT (94,500km) for a 2010 MZ speed (71,000km). Now the things that make this interesting is that I love my car and have been having fun modding it and it has not given me anything big to complain about in the way of mechanical issues but I really miss having the extra speed that comes with owning the speed other than having to pay the upgraded price on gas but if I had too, I would. As for insurance it is only $5.00 more a month to have the Speed over my GT. The other bonus is the speed has the Tech package installed and was something that I wanted in the GT but it really is not enough reason to trade in my car. Now that being said the cars are almost identical in mods and color, so if I did not say anything to anyone most people probably would not even notice until they saw the front end of the car and even then I think most would think it was just my old car modded. what do you guys think.

If you drive it, you'll never look back. It's a slippery slope.

Stopped in at the dealership, decided to take a Speed3 they had for a spin. Week later traded my GT hatch and came home with the Speed.

LOL!

Yuppers! Came from a 2010 MZ3 GT.....don't get me wrong, I loved the GT but I just wanted a wee bit more in terms of power. :)

So I therefore voted for YES!

Is it worth it? Friggin yeah!

You loved modding your GT eh?!? Your gonna love the speed. Sure, they both look indentical and with the mods you put in the GT, your thinking it's not worth it. Buddy, believe me.....it's worth it. :)

If you're happy to drive stick, and the financials work out favourably (i.e. at least break even or not a huge expense) and you can afford it, there isn't much downside. As you mentioned, only the increased cost of gas really.

What is the list price on the speed 3?

I can only echo others comments....if you can afford it, you're crazy not to do it.

I grabbed a Petro Points Mastercard which saves me 2 cents off a litre when paying with it. Once you have 15,000 petro points on your card you can grab a 5 cents off card from Petro canada and they combine for a total of 7 cents off a litre. If you start to use your mastercard to pay for everything your points will build up fast. I am just over 200,000 points in a year and a half of owning the card. Makes the gas that much more affordable if thats a concern.

Or just get a momentum infinite Visa. 4% off of gas which at 1.50/l for premium works out to 6c off a litre every time instead of 2c sometimes and 7c sometimes.

Just to put it number wise,

2010 Speed3 has a 15.9 gal tank. (60 Lt)

Premium is ~0.25$ more a liter.

60x0.25 = $15 more a fiill up.

To some that could make a huge difference (it did to me when I had my 3). depending on how much you drive a week, it could start to add up.

Not trying to be negative, just a side factor to think about.

I also just got a CIBC Mastercard/petro Points card and love it. I am saving my points for Best Buy cards however :D

A year from now if it goes up to $1.75 would you still be happy to continue to pay. That price is not that far fetched. Of course regular gas wouldn't be far behind.

I have had a speed before and was quite happy paying the inflated price for gas to have the extra giddy up and go and by all means I do miss having that extra power for when you need to get around a ding dong that is being a jackass on the road.

I've owned the 2006 GT and 2010 GT and now the 2008.5 speed. Omg so much fun and modding feels worth it.

Of course gas is higher but for me that hasnt been a factor since I work from home but the price for 94 is definitely a bit of a sticker shock. Its not much cheaper to fill my car than it is to fill my van at 87.

Of course extra maintenance costs like oil etc but if you can justify the price of ownership it is a hella fun car to drive.

Maybe you'll mod slightly less and pay more for maintenance but so far im happy with just Cobb AP and upgraded intake system. Quite a big difference right there.

94 Oct is $1.429 right now at the Dundas and Highbury Petro Canada (London).

Filled up before heading back to T.O. 22.586 litres for a total of $32.28 Did 228.7 KM from the full tank or 9.9L/100KM (approx 209 km hwy).

If there wasn't a drop in the tank (bone dry) it would have been $78.60 for a full tank.

my 50L tank costs me about $75 to fill up

we're not talking a drastic cost difference here. It's 24 cents a litre more...ok still $12. But it's the frequency you have to fill up that gets you more lol

I have never let the tank run bone dry. I fill up when my tank sits at half. Usually around 55-57 dollars depending on cost of fuel and I usually achieve 240-260km per top half of the tank.

at the moment 91OCT in shelburne is 1.389 which is about the same as what I was paying back when I had my speed and as long as I got around 400-450 to a tank I would be fine. Not to say that I care what gas prices are and I am not the sort of person that will go out of his way to save 2 cents a liter.

The fuel consumption was one of my main concerns before but if you drive subtly for most part of the time, not much of a difference compared to our 2010 GTs. However, if you feel the need for speed....that is a different story. But for me, after driving this car on the first day, my concern for fuel consumption went out the window......if you love it ,drive it. :)

I voted no.

It's $70-80 to fill up. The actual cost per liter isn't the problem, it's the rate that speed 3's consume gas that is. In town I usually only get around 350-400km to a tank. Your gas bill WILL DOUBLE (trust me, I come from a 06 GS and my driving style did not change).

Plus the mod bug will hit you hard and mods are not cheap on speed 3's, it's not just intake and exhaust and done...it's a fuel pump, intercooler, downpipe, accessport and tune, it happens to all of us. How many bone stock speed 3's are there on here? None.

They are money pits and a bit more tempermental requiring a little more tender loving care (more maintenance more frequently).

If you can handle all that, then sure, knock yourself out.

How much $ mod wise did you have to put into it to get to 680km to a tank?

My main reason for getting a speed was that I needed that extra money from gas and what not to pay for rent and bills when I moved out. I was more concerned with getting out on my own then owning a faster car.

...now I drive a truck LOL, and get ~500km to a 70lt tank.

you can dump as much money as you want as long as you're driving the car spiritedly. Look at my mod list i got 680 with all of that. The reason i got that much was that i was shifting at 2500 as opposed to 3000 like i do usually and i barely went into boost. It was also mostly hwy driving i was doing.

With 100% highway mileage 600km/tank is not hard to do, especially on 2nd gen's with a 60 litre tank.

unless i was willing to change back to a stage 2 91 map then i would have boosted all the way there..but since i wanted to see how much i could get on a custom 94 tune without boosting on a 55L tank then what's the point. It was a one time thing...Ask me how much i boost now. ALL THE TIME!

Point of the thread is whether the guy should get a speed 3 or not....yes if you're gentle on the car it can get decent mileage but that's just not what you do with a speed 3.

Also stage 2 91 or custom 94, I'm guessing the closed loop side of things would be pretty close as most tuning focuses on the OL/CL transition and then OL.

The point is to have the power when you want to use it. I get about 7-7.5l/100km in the summer by not boosting every block to the next stopsign. That is just stupid. I save it for when it makes sense, and it puts a smile on my face every time.

My $0.02

- The car payments will stop (eventually) - but insurance and gas will be payments for as long as you own it.

It's inevitable that gas prices will continue to increase... But a $0.10 difference between regular and premium fuels doesn't really hit the pocket too hard (unless you're filling 50+Litres 2-3 times a week)

Insurance is the killer - can either go down over the years, or sky rocket over night.

My verdict - YOLO lol

Based on colour alone I'd vote CWP even though it's pretty popular in the club..... hard to get color-matched though for repairs.

I am sorry to say that I was unable to get to brampton to do my test drives. Friday nights road closures and the amount of snow that I have in my engine bay at the moment took precedence over doing the test drives. Maybe I should just got back to driving a Jeep Wrangler and not have this issue again. LOL. I am hoping that this week and weekend will be better and that I can find the time to get to do my test drives.

So I have an update, the upgrade to the speed has been kiboshed by the boss(wife) but I have been given the go ahead to get a new bike, so the search begins for a new harley Street Glide. thanks for all the input guys.

wife would prefer that I get a bike then trade in the car as she loves the Mazda.

But you'd be trading in for pretty much the same car...

Yes, yes. But I'm assuming his wife is in love with the car in general, not with the idea of 184hp and anything more would ruin it.

correct, she could care less if I had more horsepower in my mazda but she loves to ride and since I got rid of my last bike she has been bugging me to get another. Now I just need to pay some bills and save a few bucks and find a street glide that I love.

Enjoy the Harley man. :thumbsup

My wife also "kiboshed" my plans on getting an RX-8 R3, so I said I'll just get a Speed3. :)

Maybe you missed the part where his wife told him to get a new bike....
