Hey guys,

does anyone here do or know someone who does metal fabricating for a decent price? Im doing a chair project and may need someone to fabricate the sheet metal portion of the chair. Need someone that is good and would understand the design. My group hasnt decided on a final concept yet but should have one towards next week.

Also Im a student so cost here is a big issue.

Thanks

Depending on what needs to be done with what metal I may be able to help.

are you taking industrial design by chance??

And yea I might be able to help depending on what you're looking for. send me a PM when you've got a more resolved direction

yep it is. The infamous Humber Industrial Design Chair project!

neat :)

what group is this for?

Its for a chair show we have sometime in feburary. Basically for all 2nd year students. We all have a theme to follow ( this year is Scandinavian design) and we must build a chair from our assigned materials ( my group has sheet metal and plywood). It is judged by a few industry proffesionals and in the end we get some kind of prize ( usually money) if we get 1st/2nd or 3rd place. Ill post a link for you guys if you guys want to come see it ( once I get the details of exactly when and where)

haha wicked, I remember it well :D

We made our chairs out of 0.25" sheets of aluminum. They were pretty heavy, but mine still looks great in my office lol (I took the black one)

Be sure to post up some photos of your design!

here is a picture of the chair ( only minor changes might be made later on)

Would it be possible to make the red seat part? ( Ill be doing the wood myself)

its going to be made from 16 gauge sheet metal. I can source the sheet metal if needed. 3 chairs in total need to be constructed.
name a price as well...

So far we found one fabricator but he isnt replying to our emails.

Also on a sidenote: We are also looking for a powder coater for the chair that can do 3 of these within a week.

Are you planing on bends or welds at the lines on the metal?
None the less its beyond my ability. Sorry.

the lines are all bends.. Its kind of hard to explain right now exactly how it will look like ... Ill try and see if i can make a solidworks model of it

and its ok... It is very complex, but we have to make it. If you know anyone who might be able to do it let me know.

Those are very complex bends and imo cant really be done properly on a normal break shape. A stamp would be needed. If thats the case to make only 3 thats going to cost ALOT!!!

Solid works, although a great program, doesnt really take into account the manufacturing process. What can be created cant always be made. You may have bit off more then you can chew on this one.

Although I would double check with someone familiar with the manufacturing process. Its been a few years since I did it.

just talked to my professor and they said the same thing... We are currently reworking the design. Ill post pics of the refined design once we have finalized it.

You could cast those two pieces that you're trying to make.. or use injection molding if you're willing to make it out of plastic..

The seat can definitely be done on a bending machine however, the backrest would be next to impossible.. I have no idea how you'd get those bends w/o using a mold.

have to use sheet metal and plywood. At this point we cant interchange the materials either. We have a newer design now that is simpler. Ill post pics soon

bumping thread once again for project related question::

Anyone know where I can find a place that sells birch plywood in 5/8" thickness that can fit in the back of my hatch? So far All the places I have seen deal with larger companies and sell massive sheets ( more than what can fit in my hatch.... I need a roof rack :( ) and do not provide any cutting . Need about two 40 x 40 sheets.

Thanks I should have mentioned that the metal fabricator has been taken care of. I just didnt want to create a new thread for the plywood.
