Full name according to the manual is "Air bag/front seat belt pretensioner system warning light"

2006 GS 2.3L hatchback

I've only been driving the car for about a week, I didn't realize this light was a malfunction indication until I was reading my manual for some other stuff. The light in the gauge cluster is on once I start the car and stays on until I turn off the car. It does not blink nor turn off at any point.

Not to be confused with the passenger airbag light beside the ash tray, this light does not stay on.

This whole time I've been driving alone with either a lunch bag or purse in the passenger seat, neither are light nor heavy. Not sure if this is related to the light in the gauge? I know this is related to the light beside the ash tray based on threads I searched on here

Since I just got the car I've also been vacuuming and moving the seats back/forth...not sure if this is related?

Any help is appreciated! Hopefully this does not require a trip to Mazda, although I do understand the importance of fixing this, hopefully there is something I can do?

There is a problem with the SRS system. Have it looked at to see what the problem is. Could be something simple like a wire out of place or it could be more in depth.

Where are you located? I have a scanner that I could read the light and tell you what is causing it to stay on?

I'm in Scarborough, are you referring to the OBD scanner? If so, I thought this issue doesn't get picked up?

Yesterday I realized that despite a nearly 200lb passenger in the front passenger seat, the airbag light beside the ashtray did not light up. If I remember the manual correctly, it should light up.

Now I'm thinking I got a bigger air bag system problem than just the gauge light not going off..

The air bag light will light up beside the ashtray when the weight is below 66lbs to say the air bag is off IIRC. So a 200LB person in there the light should be off.

You will require a scanner that is capable of reading SRS codes. Generally speaking the passenger seat occupancy detector is probably shot. Seen a lot of them go at work. (I don't work for mazda but they are very common)

I reviewed my manual and you are correct, I'm so glad I remembered incorrectly! If I was right that would be a big PITA for me and my wallet.

So I still have the issue with the light in the gauge not turning off within 6 seconds of starting the car, as per what the manual states. I will need to get this checked for sure.

Where can I get access to a scanner that reads SRS codes? Mechanic only? I think this is related to the driver detector not the passenger?

Check the connection under passenger seat... My air bag light came on a couple years ago and it was caused by the connection coming lose from moving the seat back and forth.... I pushed the connection back in and light never came back on!

I have a scanner with that, other shops may have it, I won't charge you anything to read it if you drive to me in Oakville. But it would probably cost you enough at a dealer or other shop to read it.

Are you able to provide more specific instructions or link to a video as to what exactly I should do to check out this connection? Thanks in advance!

Just look under passenger seat you should be able to see where it plugs into the button of your seat..just make sure it's plugged in... It's pretty basic to do.

this is the best video I can find on YouTube.... Just push all the connecters back in.

Thank you, but where in the world/what is that black piece that he pulls out of nowhere at 1:36 in the video??? so the white part that he unplugs from, is now left hanging? This doesn't sound right...?

That video is just an example... Don't unplug anything just make sure all your connections are plugged in... It's the only video I could find on YouTube to show you the connections under seat.

Checked all the connections under the passenger seat, nothing seemed loose. I haven't started my car since (will tomorrow morning) but I'm not expecting the light to go off.....would it have to do with the driver seat connections? remember this is the light in the gauge, not beside the cig tray

Yes I know which light is on.... Just cause it seemed like all the connections were on good doesn't mean they were

I did put my hand under there and pushed on where the connections were to see if any would budge, but they didn't. What procedure is suggested?
