I know it\'s really way to early about asking questions about winter tires and rims. But I\'m just wondering will any 16 steelie rim fit our cars? I have doubts. I\'m not sure if this is the correct term for it, so correct me if I\'m wrong, but is off-set the term for the space required for the brakes to fit within the rim\'s diameter? If not what is it, if there is such. And where might I find that info, I haven\'t checked the manual yet, but don\'t recall seeing that info in there. Thanks

I think the best way is ask the dealer services dept, although they will tell you to get 16\" alloys are the best and easiest.:p

16\" will fit the 17\" GTs IIRC

15\" will not due to the larger brake rotors

I think time to shop, will someone or Xenon organize a GB for winter tires?

I have already started looking into GBs for Steelies and Winter tires.

Steelies - This is an easy one. Westowne Mazda (one of our dealer affiliates) will be having a sale very shortly on Steelies, designed to fir ALl Mazdas, including the 3. He says he will give us these Steelies, not only at our Car Club Affiliate Discount, but also an additional discount if we buy in bulk.

Tires - This is much harder, as it\'s difficult to go to all the tire stores in the GTA. I\'m hoping by September to have some Regional Reps. I will be asking them to report to me about any deals they can find, then i will personally visit the stores they mention.

Do you know how much they want for the rims?

not yet. I will be talking with Niki on Wednesday when my car goes in for an oil change.

i\'ve dealt with Steelcase Tires N Mags for the past few years. they\'ve done group deals on winter tires/rims for a few other car clubs. IIRC, their 16\" steelies are ~$40 to $45/rim. (these guys supply dealerships in the area with their steelies). if Westowne can give the rims below $40 per then that\'s a steal.

Nantucket Tires N Mags will also sell steelies for ~$40-45/rim.

Wheels Direct was popular last year with car clubs. they had 16\" rims and Kuhmo KW11 tires for ~$400. they also gave out prices for other brands of tires (going up in price the better the tire).

VW guys have dealt with either Wheel and Tire Zone or Extreme Wheel and Tire.

as for tires, i\'ve been using exclusively Nokian. I had the Hakka1 on the maxima for 3 years and it went through just about anything - snow, ice, slush...in addition it still looks like new and i was HARD on those tires. This year, i\'ll probably go for the Nokian WR, since that is more of an \'all-weather\' tire which still has RAC snow certification.

but any winter rubber is better than no-season tires. Toyo makes an excellent set of winter tires. Bridgestone Blizzaks are amazing but wear down QUICKLY.

www.tiretrends.com is good for gauging the price of tires.

for a good set of rubber and rims, expect to pay anywhere from $400 to $800 before taxes.

A GB would be great. I\'m in KW and I\'ve been keeping my eye out for deals on a set of 16\" steelies and winter tires, but it seems it\'s still too early. I\'m definitely in on a GB.

I just dealt with Ben at Wheels Direct and he seemed like a good guy. I should be talking to him over the next couple of days so I\'ll try and tell him about TM3 and see if he wants to give us any info on winter tires and rims.

I believe he set up a group buy with Toyota Nation last winter. I\'m not positive on that though.

I would definitely be interested in getting two sets of Toyo SnowProx S950 winter tires (205/50r17).

Damn, just read the title of the thread...oh well, if Wheels Direct can get us a deal just on tires, at least that is half of the battle.

At the moment I\'m interested in the Michelin Pilot Alpin PA2, but even for 195/65R15 they are a bit pricey. I\'ll have to do some more legwork before I decide on anything though....

I\'d be looking for:
- a set of 4 * 16\" steel rims
- a set of 4 * 205-55R16 winter tires. e.g. Kumho

Thats exactly what I want for my car also. I\'ve heard a lot of good things about Kumho, and how its the best value/bang for the buck for winter tires.

Don\'t quote me on this, but talking to my friend who works at Avante Richmond Hill, he mentioned that the Service Department will have aftermarket winter tires package soon available for our Mazda 3s. Price was around $700-$800 depending on the choice of tires. So it might be as easy as visiting the Mazda Service Department to get winter tires.

Its not really a GB, my buddy works at Avante RH. He said that basically that Mazda Service Departments in a month or two will offer a Winter Tire package that you can buy from the service department. Its considered an aftermarket package because the steelies aren\'t Mazda OEM steelies.

He said I can ask my local service department(Avante TO) when I go in to get my first oil change. But I\'m seeing him this Thursday at Avante RH to get some accesories so I\'ll ask him about the winter tire package again.

Don\'t worry guys, winter isn\'t coming in at least 2 months or so. I\'m as anxious as you guys to get winter tires, so I\'ll keep everyone posted.

I just sent this to Wheels Direct. We\'ll see if they get back to us.

This is mainly directed to Ben.

Ben, I was just in there getting some ROH Fury rims and Fuzion ZRi tires, I was wondering if you could do me a favour. I belong to a car club called the Toronto Mazda 3 club http://torontomazda3.com and a few of the members are looking into getting steel rims & winter tires for our cars. Is it possible you could quote us some prices on 15\" 195/65R15, 16\" 205/55R16, and 17\" 205/50R17 rim and tire combos for the 2004 model? If you\'d like, send the prices to my email address then I can report to the guys on the site. Or, if you\'d rather, join the site and post in the Wheels / Tires section.

Thanks in advance,
Chris

Just checked Tiretrends.com (in BC) for winter packages on the Mazda3 Sport GT. They have a few, but I was most interested in the 16\" Dunlop Winter Sport M3s. The steel wheels (16x6.5 Mazda 67.1, 5x114.3mm) are $64.95 each while the Dunlop tires (205/55R16 91 V1) are $158.36 each. They mount and balance the set and the total with shipping and all taxes is $1052.05.

I wanted to get your input as to sizing and price. Would this combo work and is the price reasonable? Thanks...

you can get 205 55 16 from canadian tire for like 105 each a tire - Nordic Ice trac - My guess is unless you are doing some crazy snow driving or you live in the artic you really don\'t need to spend 1000 dollars. probably more like 500 -600. The only thing i don\'t know about it life expectancy on these tires and who makes them. But I belong to a prelude club and people have used them and been happy with them.

A grand for snow tires and rims?????? No thanks... :(

$500 to $600 sounds a bit more reasonable for an adequate set.

500 to 600 before taxes would be hard to come by in the 205/55/16 size for the GT.

on tiretrends.com, the cheapest winter tires are the:

Hankook W604 Ice Bear @ 99.96/tire
Hankook W300 Ice Bear @ 109.96/tire
Kumho KW11 @ 103.09/tire

these would be adequate tires for the winter conditions. you\'d still have to factor in ~$50/rim in 16\" size which would bring the cheapest tire to ~$690 after taxes ($600 before taxes). look to save >$700 for winter tires in the 16\" size.

as for the price of snow tires being too high, look at it this way, they\'re good for at least 4-5 winters and will pay for themselves in the long run when you\'re able to stop in the crappiest winter conditions.

as for myself, i\'m looking at getting Nokian WR (www.nokiantires.com) all-weather tires....which will cost me ~$1000 after taxes for rims, tires, mounting and balancing.

If you want to spend a grand that is cool I was just pointing out that most people don\'t need to spend that much esp. if they don\'t drive in serious snow on an ongoing basis during the winter. 300-400 not spent on tires could be spent on something else.

actually most people would be better served by taking the money saved and taking a winter driving school. That will help more then any tires ever will. I do a lot of winter driving, in the country, in heavy snow and i play a game with myself. What is the first car that i see in a ditch when the roads are snow covered? i would say 80 percent of the time it is a 4x4 or a car with snow tires.

Yes, I\'ll admit that doling out another $1000 after buying a brand new car just a few months before isn\'t very palatable, but I think necessary for my area. I live in Sudbury which, if any of you have ever had the pleasure of driving through in the 5 months of winter, is pretty brutal. The roads are crap to begin with, add to that living in a snow belt and you\'ll see that more than just adequate snow tires are a necessity. I also wanted tires that would perform well on dry pavement so the Dunlop Winter Sport 3 fit the bill. I\'ll have to do more shopping to find a better price, but the total of $1052 for a full set of steel wheels, full set of winter tires, mounting/balancing, shippping and taxes isn\'t a bad deal, IMHO ;)

I\'d love to get some input on this too. Anyone find a full 16\" set of steel wheels and either the Dunlop Winter Sport M3 or the Yokohoma AVS 901, including all fees and taxes, for under $1000? Winter is just around the corner and I definitely will be getting a full set of performance winter tires so any advice would be great.

I also contacted my dealer to find out about any special winter wheel/tire packages for the Mazda3. They said \"any day now\" and will contact me with the details and pricing. Has anyone gone this route? What is your dealer offering?

ok so i\'ve been looking places (to see what good tires are, since i\'ve never had a set of winter/summer tires..) my findings...

Dunlop Winter Sport M3
Michelin Pilot Alpin PA2

those 2 seem to be that highest rated tires on tirerack.com and 1010tires.com supports it. also they are in the decent price range 105USD and 117USD respectively. on 1010tires they go for 160CAD and 180CAD

now.. recently i reunited with a buddy of mine from highschool :D i found out he works at speedy and he owns a mazda3 GT + GFX. he wasn\'t at work today so i\'ll call him tomorrow and see if i can we could get a deal.

I also heard that second time around tire has pretty good deals on tires so i can try to call them up and see what can be done. but before i need to see ppl\'s input on what tires to decide on b/c i THINK it would be better (get a better deal if we could decide on the same tires/rims)

so any input?

ZoomZoom Girl

For Performance winter tires with decent tread wear, excellent handling in winter AND excellent handling on dry road conditions, I think you would be very hard pressed to find a better tire than the Dunlop Winter Sport M3 or the Yokohoma AVS V91. Both are fairly similar (from the reviews I have read) and of comparable price. Sizing would be 205/55 R16 on 16\" steel wheels that actually fit on our cars. Question is, can anyone find a full set of these for less than the $1052 I was quoted through Tiretrends.com (including shipping and all taxes)? Still waiting on input from my local Mazda dealer....

Hey Avante Mazda,

Thanks for the price on the different winter tire packages. We finally heard it from the horse\'s mouth.

My question is what did you mean by \"sample\". Since I have a GT Sport, I am only interested in the 16\" sets, but do you offer more tire choices for the 16\"s other than the two you listed above? If so what are they?

I am sure if you could post the prices/packages for 15\" for the GS/GX owners, they would appreciate it too.

EDIT: What brand of steel rims are included in these packages? Are they Mazda OE ones or a aftermarket/3rd party steel rim?

If you check the review of the KW17 on TireTrends.com (http://www.tiretrends.com/tire_info.php3?detailID=11008), you\'ll see that some guy drove from Kelowna, BC to Toronto around Christmas 2003 and didn\'t have any problems :hoho

another guy from Edmonton is giving it favourable reviews. another review was posted on epinions.com under the KW11 tire:

There wasn\'t a category for the H-rated KW17 so I will put it here with the KW11s. In fact, the KW17s are hard to find.

I have a Toyota Celica which is great fun to drive, so I wanted a winter tire that didn\'t turn my car into a truck. Luckily, winter tire technology has really progressed and it is now possible to have a performance winter tire. These tires give almost the same performance as the OEM all-season Potenzas in dry weather, and better in rain and of course hugely better in snow, slush and ice. They are slightly noiser over rough pavement and maybe a little more jittery, but I have not really sacrificed any comfort or grip switching to them.

Of course, I switched because of snow - nothing beats a snow tire in the winter. These tires give me a whole new level of grip in the winter that lets me blow by SUVs and trucks in inclement weather. I like it when unsuspecting SUV drivers look at me with their mouths open as I pass them, not realizing that their $75 000 high-tech SUV will only have as much grip as the worn out old all-seasons they never bothered to change. Grip is all about the tire, and all-seasons just don\'t have it in cold, ice, and snow.
Having said that, I find that these tires are not as good as some other snow tires in heavy snow. They shine in rain, light snow, ice, and slush, are pretty good in packed snow, but struggle in deep snow. I guess that is why they are studdable. For me, that is perfect because I do most of my driving on the highway and you rarely get deep snow on major highways. I wouldn\'t want a snow tire that gives me extra deep snow traction but sacrfices dry grip and noise. Everything is a trade-off, and these ones are perfect for me.

Source: http://www.epinions.com/content_131424226948

i may in fact forego the Nokian WR (http://www.nokiantires.com/newsite/tires_popup.cfm?id=6) I was thinking of and go with the KW17 in 205/55/16.

FYI

I was surfing around other fourms and saw a group buy for winters at a toronto subaru club. The 16\" are good for the GT\'s, I dont know about the 15\" though.

The price is good but they want 50% deposit before a specific date and I didnt even get my car yet, so I dotn think i can go that route.

I mean i went thru the BC mountains in a snow storm with ice n slush, and i was purposely tryin to push them in thru the corners, and these tires stick like mad, even on pure ice, they corner like nothin i have ever driven before.

out west sees different conditions than the toronto area...even northern ontario sees a boatload of snow in december.

so a little update on what i found out so far (actually not that much :( )

1) the second time around guy never called back.. i\'ll e-mail them later on
2) ok tire was closed when i went UGH
3) speedy - my buddy will be in on monday and find out he says that they mainly deal with michelins and bfgoodrich, so those 2 they can get the better prices on but he\'ll check others and see how much it will be. he also said that some sort of commitment would be needed when ordering - like 20-30% nonrefundable deposit (as it costs that much to send back what they wouldn\'t sell - their restocking fee)
4) while driving on speers road in oakville (between ok tire and speedy) i found there were a few shops so i can maybe pop in during the week or so and see what they would say.

also i heard that Tire World Inc in brampton is pretty good and will match/beat the competitors. anyone in the area can pay them a visit? no website but a phone number and address can be found here (http://www.google.com/local?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&q=tire+world&near=Brampton,+ON&oi=locald&radius= 0.0&latlng=43632735,-79831816,7085390394401774124)

oh and below is the attached spreadsheet so far summing up other\'s findings (didn\'t include the dealer b/c they are at least 50 bux more and that\'s BEFORE taxes)

PS. unfortunately *.xls iss not allowed so .. download and rename to xls and open

What are people\'s opinions on the Kumho KW17 tires from Avante Mazda? Are the Dunlops that ZoomZoom Girl quoted worth the price difference?

And has anyone found a better price? What kind of volume do we need for a group discount?

Is the $749+tax for anyone or a special price for TorontoMazda3 people?

Hi hotgo, overall the Kumho KW17 look to be the best bang for the buck winter tire which, at the same time, won\'t sacrifice dry-surface traction. I do not have any information regarding the Dunlops though.

Toronto Mazda3 car club has an affiliation with Avante Mazda. We wish to encourage all members of our club to be \"active\" and as such, one of the incentives is the discounts from affilliate companies. Please check out the following thread when you have some time;

I am unsure of the quoted $749+tax price, but my guess is that is the public/retail price thru Avante Mazda.

Hi Everyone. This is my first post ;)

I just came back from my 1st service at Dave Wood Mazda in Newmarket.

They have two winter packages available:
1. Blizzak WS-50\'s on steelies. Mounted, balanced, installed for $799
2. Pirelli Wintersport 210\'s on steelies. Mounted, balanced, installed also for $799.

Just thought I\'d share the info...

Here\'s a dumb question...are those prices for 16\" rims and tires?

Good info DriverEd,

How far out is Dave Wood Mazda from the GTA? I am assuming the price is $799 + taxes?

Dave Wood Mazda is on Mulock Dr in Newmarket. If you\'re going N on 404, it\'s about 20kms North of Hwy 7.

Yeah, it\'s $799 plus tax = $918.85

Yes, they are 205/55 R16.
