The one time I park on street due to city dumping a massive ice block on my driveway, my car along with a few neighbours get trashed.
Looks like dude with hammer went along bashing headlights and tail lights.
Looking at replacing rear right tail lamp module on my Mazda5.
Dealer wants $250 + tax to install it. I see it on Rockauto for $130 shipped to my door.
My question is, what is the difficulty on doing the replacement myself? For half the price, I am considering it. I'm fairly handy but have very little experience with cars. I'm assuming it's held in with a few clips or screws?
I know it's a Mazda3 forum but I figure it's probably going to be similar as doing the Mazda3 hatchback.

Takes a minute
Nuts come off and unplug the lights

I agree, buy the part and then just install it yourself. Im not very much mechanically inclined and I have done it before on many cars. Believe me its easy

Hmm.. I just noticed that the Rock Auto is not OE Mazda. Should I be concerned about possible colour differences?
$130 for generic vs $195 + tax for OE Mazda.
Would like to save money but not if it means the car will look mismatched.

Wrecked would be a better choice. Colour match more certain, and if you get the same model year (or close) fading etc. will be closer to the unbroken one.

when tightening the nuts on the back make sure to be very careful when tightening them. the stud is pressed/molded into a plastic "sleeve". that sleeve breaks very easily.

I've only ever tightened the nuts with my fingers. No problems in either car.

Ya, definitely only SNUG the nuts when tightening.

Just as an option, if you've ever thought about aftermarket taillights, now would be a good opportunity to do so. Yes some styles look tacky, but I've seen some that NM and G16 carried that weren't too bad. Just thought I would mention it.

I found a junk yard part for $100 at standardautowreckers but I'll look into aftermarket/jdm lights.. Never thought about it..
Now to see what I can find.

New lesson learned. Always read the manual before asking a question online.
Turns out the instructions were in the manual as I need to remove the taillight module to change bulbs out.
Only had sedans before and you just reach from within trunk to change bulbs. Assumed it was the same for the 5. Took me 10 minutes to change out the module.
Thanks for the replies.
