View Full Version : Strange noise after ignition

Just started having this issue on Saturday night. Car had been sitting untouched for almost 24 hours in the driveway and I was getting ready to go to my hockey game. As I turned the ignition on, I heard a very loud clunking-grinding-rattle sound (hard to describe) from the engine. The noise is clearly audible from inside the car and lasts for about a second. Drove to my game, no issues. Turned the car on 3 hours later and it didn't make a noise. Got home without issues.
The following day I was installing lighting mods so the car had been sitting overnight for about 15 hours or so. Turned the ignition on and the same noise happened. Hood was popped at the time and my friend was standing by it so he heard it as well.
I don't know if it's related, but a few days ago I noticed my steering felt tighter during slow left turns. It was more obvious when I was backing out of the driveway, then slowly accelerating and turning left into the road. Other than that I haven't seen or noticed anything strange. I haven't made any mechanical or performance modifications so I'm not sure what's causing any of it. Hope someone can shed some light on it. Sorry if I'm being too vague :(

Not sure how the power steering pump works in the 3 but I assume its same as all others I've seen.
Could be a pulley.

Could just be the cold!...You should hear the PS pumps howl on the buses when their started up cold....and hence the reason there's no noise when you start it up warm.

That's what I was thinking, but it's strange that it would make that noise all of a sudden when there have been much colder days over the past couple years. This morning I couldn't replicate the noise.

Shifted into reverse, then drive, then park while idle. Is this amount of engine movement normal?

Well no more strange noises today and the steering felt normal too, must've been a cold weather anomaly. I'll keep an ear out for it but hopefully it won't happen again.

That's good news...Now as for your other concern: its hard to tell. I don't have a gen 2 or an auto, so nothing to compare. Try another video but just leave it in park, or you could put it in drive, foot on brake (emergency brake on also) and rev the engine up a few times. If it's a bad MM the engine will move excessively.

The power steering pump is electro-hydraulic based - there is no belt and pulley used like the old traditional style setups
