View Full Version : Loud noise when putting up driver side window

Is anyone else having this problem? Occasionally, I get a loud noise when I\'m putting up the driver side window. The sound is sort of similar to if you threw a rock at the window...in any case, it sounds like something is happening to the window as opposed to anything that sounds mechanical or electrical. Any thoughts?

I\'m aware of that noise, my dad\'s 3 has that only the driver\'s side window. Other 3 owners have heard that on other windows too. I don\'t know what it is but to me it sounds like the glass is making that noise. Luckily I don\'t have that problem on my car.

I haven\'t noticed any noise while openning/closing the window. I have other rattle noises coming from the door instead. I\'ll check in a couple of days, when I can roll my windows down again (got tint and waiting for a few days to pass).

HEY!!!
Someone else with the noise....Mine has been doing that since day one...
I\'m debating taking it to the dealer...Worried that when they pull the door apart that I will be left with a quiet window, but a door rattle...

I\'m also debating on whether I should take it to the dealer or not. I mean, it\'s annoying and startles passengers at times, but it\'s not a major problem and I don\'t want my car stuck in the shop for a (as of now) small problem.

Hmm, I didn\'t notice anything while with you going to and from the meet this past weekend? That and maybe better to call and ask a GOOD dealership (ie. Avante, good for their service of course). Wouldn\'t want the window to be stuck open with rain.
That or keep a roll of saran (sp?) wrap in the trunk just in case. :p
Westowne Mazda will take car of you.... they are an extremely good dealership.

ummm... what kind of noise is it exactly? a crackling noise? I\'m a little confused.

To me it sounds like something is hitting the glass, maybe the mechanism at the bottom of the pane of glass.

Yeah, what bluntman said. Mind you, it doesn\'t happen every time, I estimate maybe a quarter of the time.

I\'m not sure if both driver and passenger side windows make the noise. I was getting onto the 403 and with all the wind noise plus radio I thought I heard something similar. After arriving at my destination I rolled the windows up/down but didn\'t hear a thing and haven\'t since. I swear I could have heard a similar \"rock hitting glass\" sound.

It\'s quite possible you heard something...Mine doesn\'t do it all the time and I swear I\'ve heard something similar on the passenger window...I\'m going to wait until my first service and then mention it to the dealer...Still uncomfortable having them monkey with the windows...

It has been confirmed, my passenger side window makes that noise. Crap!!! I heard it a couple of times today. What the hell is it??? It\'s just annoying knowing something is wrong. Well I\'ll certainly mention it at my first oil change.

I hear a noise when the window is rolling up and the window fully closes. Is that what you guys are talking about? Or does it happen half way through rolling the window up?
In any case, does it only happen on the driver side window, because that\'s what I think most of you are saying. If so, then maybe it has to do with the Auto-Roll Down feature of the driver side, because only the driver side has it. Just something to think about.
In any case, mine makes a noise when the window closes (which I think is normal), but I\'ve never heard a rock hit a galss. Wouldn\'t it break? :) So I don\'t know if I\'d describe the noise as \"rock hitting a glass\"

I\'ve heard the sound come from my front passenger window more often when closing the window.

I don\'t know if it\'s because the driver side window is in use more than the other windows, but I find it happens more often there. The noise occurs as soon as the window starts going back up.
Migg, if you could ask your dealer when you go in for your oil change, that\'d be great! ;)

Well I just hit over 5k, so probably in August I\'ll be going to the dealership. If I go earlier I\'ll ask for sure.

Sounds like news to me. It could possibly be the window regulator that\'s making the noise. The regulator holds the pane of glass in place and guides the window up and down.

I\'ve been hearing it more regular now. Front passenger window. Open the window completely and as it hits the bottom you can hear a bit of a clunk sound. Or if you have the window slightly open and close it, you hear the noise.

I have this problem too. More often heard on passenger side but once in a while I will get it on driver\'s side. Same procedure as above stated.

You guys should demonstrate this to us during the meet. As far as noises are concerned I only hear something when the window fully closes. This sound is the same for all my windows and so I\'m inclined to the notion that this is normal. The only reason I bring this up is because it\'s actually quite loud when compared to other cars.
Anyway, whoever has this problem consistently and is also going to the 3rd meet, you might have to provide the rest of us with multiple demos. :D

Got the car back yesterday from it\'s 8000km service. I had the dealer look at the power window noise. They pulled the panel and tightened the power window motor....
So far so good...

I do have this problem...but it is coming from the passenger window. I will mention this to the dealer.

I\'ve noticed a different problem on mine recently. The Auto Roll down feature on the driver side is messing up on my 3 I think. I press it and then the window rolls down and stop randomly while going down. Sometimes just below the top, sometimes just above the bottom, sometimes someway half through, and other times it works perfectly.
Is there a certain way you have to press the button for ti to work perfectly?
I\'ve tried so many combinations, short press, long press, medium press and they\'re all stopping randomly (I press all the way down).

Yep mine does it too the drivers side about half of the time and the passenger side does it pretty much every time and its louder than the drivers side.its definately some part of the power window mechanicals hittin the glass....i.m definately gettin the dealer to look at it

I got the passenger side fixed, but now I\'m starting to hear it a little more on the driver side. I told them when they were fixing the passenger side and they told me to tell them when it\'s consistently doing it :sarc
Reactive instead of preventative :(

I just started getting that knocking sound in my passenger window after I took my car to be tinted at FXauto. I took it to the dealer and the tech looked at it and said that he had to order a part to fix it but didn\'t say what. I didn\'t ask cause I was glad that they were taking care of it. Will see what happens when it comes in!

Just got my passenger side window repaired. They had to replace the power window motor. All\'s good now and it\'s not making that knocking sound.:)

Misery loves company. First, I\'m glad that I\'m not the only one. I don\'t always roll down my windows, so the cracking sound was certainly noticable. This happened when just when going back up with the front passenger window. I\'m sure that there is an issue with the window regulator, and I know that it\'s not because I had my windows tinted (some 6-months or 12,000 km ago), and the guy who does it only reverses the inner rubber seal in order to place the tint film on the glass (nothing more).
Should I bring it to the dealer\'s eyes? Since I deal with Avante, and they have been really good in addressing my various issues, I\'ll mention it during my 16,000 km oil change (June/July time frame).
Cheers,
PiCASSO
I started to hear that noise around the last week in April after I can\'t back from my vacation. The car\'s 6 months old with 13K but I\'m not sure if it\'s because I\'ve been away from the car for a while why I haven\'t heard it. The funny thing is though, I hear the problem on the driver\'s side when I\'m putting the window DOWN. Everyone seems to have the problem when putting the window up. It\'s not a very comforting sound, it almost sounds the window is going to break(like a rock is tossed at the window). I remember the first time I hear it I jumped, luckily I didn\'t have a hot cup of brew in my hand. I\'m going to take it to my dealer and see if they can\'t figure it out. I\'ll keep the club updated.
