Hey guys,

I've got a nice set of speakers that were installed in my previous car, this year they must go into the mazda as to not sit in a box and taunt me any longer.

I will be running a 4channel amp, + the 4 6.5" speakers & two external tweeters. Now the install is pretty straight forward as i understand it but i'm wondering what have you done about mounting a 6.5" in our 6x9 slots?

Did you make your own adapters? Wood?
Did you buy them online? Decent products?

I see them go for around 10$/set and im wondering if i should just cut them out myself vs ordering some

Any advice/experience stories are appreciated

Cheers

Travis

My front speakers are mounted on adapters I cut myself. I need to get a pair for the rear and currently don't have access to a good spot/tools to cut out a new set, so I'll probably have to order a set. They really need to be MDF ones though, the last time I bought plastic adapters they were like 1/8" thick and useless for mounting 6.5" speakers in our doors.

That's sort of what i was thinking. I can kind of get access to needed tools, but probably easier to buy precut ones. Any idea how thick the ones you have installed are? I'm worried that pushing it out too far will get it in too tight to the covers

There's a whole thread on this somewhere, dimensions and all are listed. Try using search.

Well one thing the door speakers aren't 6x9s. They are 5x7/6x8s. But the 6.5s do fit fine. A guy I work with has a Ford Ranger (they come with the same size as our Mazda's) and he put the 6.5s in and used Gorilla Tape to cover up the hole and worked perfectly fine. That'll be my next step when I have more money to spend on car audio!

Well yeah he is right, but it is just as easy to answer the question as to post check the search, hell you spend as much time typing one response as the other.
Sometimes you will even get thanked for being nice.;)

I just did my install a month or so ago... ya it was cold!

I tried to go the easy route and buy pre-cut adapters for $10. Not only did they still need trimmed but they weren't thick enough for my speakers and I had to make another set out of scrap wood that I had around. Making on modifying were easy though, modded the ones I bought to work and traced to cut my own. Took about 20 minutes, mind you I had the tools and materials at hand.

In total I had to use the 1/2" spacer that I bought plus another 5/8 spacer cut out of scraps for my magnet to clear the metal bar in the door. As a result I also had to trim some plastic from the inside of the door panel where it matched up to the original 5x7.

All good in the end though, man am I happy that there's so much space under that door panel. I don't think I would have had to space them out so far if the magnets were more of a typical design, the magnets on the speakers I bought were very wide.
