Just a heads up if anyone is coming to Montreal over the summer. The SPVM (Mtl police) are cracking down hard on tints.

Anything that lets in less than 70% light on the front windows is a 166$ ticket. Each cop car has a light meter (not sure what they're called) and tests on the spot.

I know Ontario cars go by Ontario law, but some cops are docks and will give it to you anyway. It's a hassle for nothing.

So if you're coming this way, roll down your windows.

Almost Had to deal with this last summer. Speeding integra stole their attention away.
Its only for the two front windows right?

That's lucky. Yeah it's the fronts, the back you can do anything. Also the sunstrip is 15cm maximum. I seriously doubt they'd notice if it's a bit bigger unless you're already pulled over though.

I've got 30% (according to the light meter), and they're on my ass like a hemorrhoid. Two tickets in two weeks after ten years with no trouble.

The people that have 20% should be especially careful.

The irony. You can buy a car that pollutes the earth, rusted to shit, and no need for a safety buuuut if you got 20% tint on your car your getting a ticket. Am I the only one who thinks that's effed?

It really is. My cousins live in Cantley (Gatineau area) and I go see them twice a year at least. And when they told me that really you can go and buy a car that has 3 doors, 3 tires, more rust then paint and black smoke coming outta the exhaust its perfectly fine to drive. I almost shit myself I can't believe that. Cuz in Ontario even a check engine light means the car is no good. But 20% tint is highly illegal. I don't understand your country.. Errr province (just a little joke I have with my cousin)

Lmao, it's definitely not my country. I'm off to Cornwall as soon as I can afford it.

Yea the whole system is a joke. It's like they collected scrap pages from other law books and stuck them together.

Wow, i go to Montreal 2-3 in the summer.
Now i'm going to have to get my front tints re-done, cheaper than getting a ticket.

Oh God, don't remind me. I'm pretty sure they sold summer to fund the referendum.

Marois is pulling a Rob Ford with how Quebec would be financially independent from Canada. Bonne chance to her in dealing with the First Nations and the loss of all the Canadian federal positions......

NOTE: apologies for derailing this thread.

No worries, wasn't really a topic anyway.

The people here are in the dark, that's the problem. They think Quebec separates and all is good in the world. They don't think of the fact that they'll have no currency, no military and get their part of the national debt. It was also decided a looong time ago that if QC separates, the natives decide whether to go with Canada or Quebec, and the Canadian military has to enforce their decision if need be, and that includes their land which might be IN Quebec, but does not belong to it. Last referendum, they voted 97% to go with Canada. There's also a big chunk of land that was "gifted" to Quebec by the Hudson Bay company in the 1800s, a condition was that Quebec stays with Canada, if they leave, it's a breach of contract and they lose the land.

That was fact, this is opinion. I seriously doubt Canada would be all like "no hard feelings, let's be BFFs". And Quebec controlling the St-Lawrence seaway? Not a chance. I think even the states would get involved.

Vive le Quebec libre! A tiny sh*thole with no money, no defense, no education and a buttload of welfare fraud, but hey, at least they preserved their language...

Sorry, had to rant. I get all worked up and butthurt when it comes to this subject.

If anything they would become financially febel after a few years at most and ask to become apart of Canada again.

I know this is all off topic, but can you comment generally on how montrealers are generally feeling about seaparion now?

Montreal is mostly against it. You barely even see any PQ election posters here. It's all the stupid mofos in the villages with their made in Quebec labatt blueue (I know, it's not, try telling them) and his 14 dependents collecting thousands in welfare that's gonna f- us all. But even those guys are starting to realize now, hopefully they'll wake the f- up before the election.

Marois pretty much shot herself in the foot though when she said that an independent Quebec would have no borders with Canada, would use the Canadian dollar and would have a seat at Bank of Canada. Like she as any say in that. The polls are almost predicting a liberal majority, looking good, maybe I'll actually make some money this year.

This. I've been in Quebec quite a few times in the last few years and everytime I've gone I've asked people what they think about this whole separating thing and not one person wanted it. Its the hardcore Quebecer's that only speak french, will never speak english and anyone who tries to speak english to them will tell them to f off in french. I personally don't understand how they could do it. As mentioned above its a very stupid move for Quebec to separate. This would mean the tax would be through the roof. To import anything (as there would be a border between Ontario and Quebec) would be a killer for Quebec. Not to mention people from Ontario who would go to Quebec to purchase beer, cigarettes whatever would be practically gone. I don't ever see it happening.

On topic:

The logic behind window tint laws is to protect police. If your front windows are too dark, an officer can't see if the driver or passenger may have pre-pulled a weapon during a traffic stop.

Also take bikers into consideration as well.

This link (http://solcontrol.ca/tint_law_chart.php) is an unofficial summary of the Tint laws for all the Canadian provinces. It is frustrating to see such a wide variance in what is considered `legal`.

Seems counter productive. Once the cop gets past the rear tints and can see the driver, he's at point blank range.

No one said laws make sense. But this is part of the reasoning behind the tint laws.

What's funny is that tints are actually a theft deterrent, but insurance companies don't care about that. Not to mention they reduce glare from *******s in SUVs with improperly installed HIDs which is the real safety hazard.

Or aholes with their high beams on. Or trucks that are perfectly align with your back window. I never had tinted windows for 6 years of owning my car. I got it done this year (20s all around) and ill be having tint on every car I own from now on. So much better and the sun doesn't get in your eyes nearly as much.
