View Full Version : Car broken into, nothing stolen?

This morning I woke up to find my coin tray, and a couple of things in the arm rest compartment scattered around the cup holder and passenger seat. I always lock my car.
The only thing of 'value' I always keep in my car is my hockey stick, and garage door opener, but is linked to another garage, and not the one where my car was parked at.
After looking around, it seems that nothing is missing, nothing was broken, and the lock didn't seem tampered with.
Turns out this also happened to my mom's car, which happened to be parked on the street. We haven't checked with neighbours yet.
Why would this be? Is there any bigger issue I should be worried about? It worries me how easily someone could get into (multiple) cars without a trace. I should also mention that this is in an area with blocks of 6 townhouses connected together, with around 30 house altogether in this area, meaning there shouldn't be any reason that we were the only ones targeted.
Weird..

My mothers car was broken into once, her papers from her back seat were thrown all down the street but from what we could tell nothing was missing.
My vote would be dumb-ass kids who are "Car Hopping" looking for Iphones, GPS' and Cash. You probably had nothing of value to them so they moved on.

How could they have gotten into at least 2 cars without leaving a sign of 'breaking in'. It seems as though nothing was 'forced'.

They just walk up to it and check the doors/windows, I know you say you lock your doors every night, but is there is a remote possibility that you may have forgot that night?

Same thing happened to my moms van last week. Glove comparment left open and papers thrown to the backseats but nothing missing. My friend caught one of the guys in the act late last year looking around in one of his neighbours vehicles.

Not a chance at all, which is why it's so unusual to me.
It's the first time this has ever happened, and the fact that my stuff wasn't shaken around too much made me not even consider it a break in initially.

Good on you for not keeping any valuables in the car. You wouldnt even believe the stuff that gets stolen out of SUVs then claimed under their property insurance.

I wouldn't read into the incident to badly, If they wanted to steal your car they would have taken it already.
Maybe you should invest in a dash cam and park facing the street, you may catch them hitting a neighbors car?
We had a Trailer stolen off our driveway with a tongue lock attached. We searched the area and they never even bother to remove it, just Ghetto Rigged the trailer to their truck and drove away.

I never like to assume anything is totally secure, because it's not. Car, computer, anything. When it comes to computer data and stuff, and keep duplicate copies in separate places for extra piece of mind.

I'm not too worried about the car, but more about them having easy access to car, possibly even home, as it's just the idea of privacy invasion that bothers me.
I say home because we've had a recent problem with our alarm system, and although the two incidents are far from likely connected, it's still unsettling.

theives have been breaking into cars and looking at the home address on the gps. they then target the home and find out when you leave. then they break into the home while the car is gone.

Did your friend do anything to the guy?
Made him empty to his pockets, slapped him hard in the face and he fell to the ground. The guy begged for mercy and said he was only looking for change to buy food. Another friend that my buddy was with knew the guy, said he was some crackhead. We all know that when they need the drugs they'll do anything for it. But anyways my friend just ended up letting him go. Calling the cops tends to be useless. I just make sure I take all valuables out the car and always lock it. Since it happened again recently I plan to install cameras around the outside of the house to catch these *******s. It's motion detector and will beep when set too to let you know there's an intruder roaming the property.

IF I was a crook...
I would break into a car to get the personal info that they leave in their glovebox - Insurance, VIN, Ownership papers, sometimes even Drivers license (or copy of) - and make some "claims"
Quick cellphone camera pics of the document - and they can be "In and Out" with nothing being "stolen" to report.
That same info can even get a replacement key cut with not much hassle.
You'd be surprised the amount of personal information people leave not only in their cars - but even on their Cell pHones.
I got into the habit of locking my glove box years ago after catching a service tech go through it. I know the lock is pointless - but ever it is isn't locked - I know somebody opened it
