Buying tires at Costco?

Hey all,

I need some tires for my car - it came with winters only, and I want something for the rest of the year.

I remembered that Costco has a tire department. Has anyone bought wheels/tires there? Or is that a huge mistake?

Shop around, costco has some good deals but many tire shops get the same deals so it all depends on what is on sale at the time, what you are looking for and installation costs.

Check out Simplytire, tires23, tirerack and GBtires. They are the places I compare prices with before committing to buying anything.

Costco has very good installation prices. Though you might get free installation if you purchase a tire from a sponsor.

I would not trust costco with mounting tires onto aftermarket wheels especially if they're Authentic Volks hehe!

I got better pricing at Simply Tire for my Bridgestones than I would have gotten when they were on sale at Costco. And Simply Tire knows what they're doing, so no worries there.

In the past I've dealt with sponsors for tires however this year I mixed it up and went with Costco. I bought 2 sets of winters and was pleased with the results. I saved $120 on both sets with some type of special going on, plus I love the short commute it took me to get there. I'd be happy to go back!

I bought my winter tires and rims this year from costco all around it was a good experience. That said, they did use lock nuts on the steelies (my bad for not noticing ) and one of the lugs sheared off, Costco couldn't fix it, so I had my local Mazda dealer sort it out. Cost me a bit of money to do it. Costco gave me a store credit for the amount that spent at Mazda when i brought them the bill. No hassles at all.

I wouldn't do aftermarket rims and tire mounting with them though, but for winters it was no problem.

I've had good experience at Costco with regards to tires that I have purchased there. IMO the Costco tire warranty is excellent. A year ago I had a nail in one of my tires that could not be fixed and the tire had been discontinued (michelin hydroedge). Costco ended up replacing all four tires and I even got money back and installation was free.

It all depends on how much you want to spend on tires. At Costco Michelin tires are on sale $70 off a set of 4 (ends June1st) and Pirelli tires go on sale June 2nd with $90 off a set of 4. Same rebates at dealers without the hassle of having to mail-in your rebate.

Side note... On my 2014 Mazda3 GS Sport (auto) I just put on a set of Michelin Premier A/S. Great tire in the rain but I find these tires create a lot more road noise than the OE Yokohama's AVID 34KV tires that came with the car. These Premier's are being returned to Costco (30 day Michelin satisfactory) and I'll replace them with Pirelli P7 all season plus.

Anyone want to comment on the Pirelli P7's good or bad?

I know of some friends who bought tires fron Costco and had them installed as well, they were contented.

Going with the sponsors is a safe bet. Costco as a big box store can sometimes have better deals and they did have a great service and warranty thing going before, not sure how it is now. But as a rule of thumb, I don't suggest using the big store, but it is so convenient for some people that it makes sense for them.

I gotta give props to Costco's warranty policy:

I bought some all-season Michelin radials Jan 2014 for my wife's Kia in Costco Naples FL - before the long drive back to the great white north. A few months later, I noticed that one sidewall had a separation in it - took it to Costco Mississauga - they replaced it! no charge, no hassle - then I took a close look at all the other tires, and noticed that one of them was considerably older than the rest (nearly 3 years old) - when I was back in Naples, I took it in and complained - they replaced that tire as well - no charge - and that was after at least one round-trip (4400+ km on the tire).

Show me a tire store that offers that kinda service!

After seeing my family buy from Costco and having exellent service, and amazing warranty. Even when my dads tire went flat, replaced the same day, no charge or hassle. That's why I just bought and installed 4 new Michelin sport as/3s and they were done sooner then they said, and gave me basically free installation. Really happy and pleased. All in it was 985 with a 70k warrenty. I'm happy

+1 I work down the road from Tires23 and have nothing but great experiences with Terry and his crew. I have also referred many friends and co-workers with the same feedback.

As others have said, would not trust Costco for installation on anything other than steelies.

Show me a tire store that sells the volume of merchandise as Costco...

Their sales far outway the cost of people bringing back used tires or half eaten cheese

Costco sells a shitload of tires. Trust me. It arrives by the truckload daily.
