Missing fender guard or am I going crazy?

Last fall I had a fender guard fall off my front left tire. I took it to Budds' and they replaced it (for a fee...)

Yesterday I'm washing my car and suddenly I feel like there's a piece missing from my rear left tire:

I don't recall ever having such a huge gap there. Rear right for comparison:

lol. thats how it is. the only reason the right rear has that guard is to protect the fuel filler neck.
