View Full Version : Popping noise from rear brakes
Aw damn, I just started hearing this low \"thud/pop\" when I brake after moderate acceleration. You can\'t really hear it if the windows are down or if the radio is on, but it\'s definately there. It comes and goes so I don\'t know if the dealer will hear it when they test the car.
Am I an idiot and is this some sort of \"normal\" brake sound? Man I sure hope so.....

Did you have your rotors machined? If you did, it could be your rotors are \"wharped.\"
This happened to me after the dealership had machined my rear rotors, they had to eventually replace the rear rotors.
Nope I haven\'t had the rotors machined, I\'m taking this sucker in on Wednesday, I\'ll tell you what the \"technical wizards\" at Mazda say.

Hmmm...sounds like you need rear rotors and or pads. That\'s the first time I heard of that complaint.
Let us know what happened.

I get this noise whenever I reverse. I used to get this in my previous vehicel too. :(

One thing I notice on the 3, is after a car wash (if you got the parking brake up), the rear pads will rust onto the rear rotors. I once left the car like this over night and I had to rev my way out to unseize the damn rotors and the pads :D they were stuck together (even with the hand brake down). Anyways, after I got them loose, I drove around to get the rest of the rust build up off and I notice this thuddering sound as well. It was because the area where the pad rusted to the rotor was clean, but the rest of the rotor was rusty:) . It went away after a few stops.

After washing my car, I drive around the block and make a few stops along the way, that way my brakes get a little hot and dry up (and remove the rust) before it\'s parked for a long time.
Well, Markham Mazda (the superstars they are) told me they serviced the front brakes. Considering I told them the back was making noise, these people are insane.
But come to think of it, the sound I hear is most pronounced after a rainfall. I bet it is rust that either flaking off or something. I\'m gonna try driving around after a wash and see if this remedies it. Thanks for your help guys.

If the \"popping noise\" persists, I would suggest you take it to another dealer.

Man I\'m SO happy I cancelled my appointment with MM service last Friday, Jul 30th. I had tinted my windows in the morning and was thinking if they\'d be a-holed enough to open the windows when I wasn\'t around... heheheh
As for getting rotors/calipers wet, do what Xenon suggested; drive around and brake a few times to full stop, before parking the car for long period of time. I did that the other day after washing my rims and although it was only like 2 km drive with four full stops, when I parked my car in my garage and checked the rotors; dry and warm!

I have the same problem and I dont think its due to the rotors being wet and rusting up. I took my car to whitby mazda and the guys there said there was a TSB on the issue. They took my car in, and after an hour or so said that they apparently fixed it. I had no noise for a few days then, it returned. So... This time I went to Ajax mazda and they said it\'s common and there is nothing they can do about it!!!!!!! I really wish another automaker made these cars because Mazda service truly stinks.
yeah I figured that there was nothing that could be done. I took mine in for service and the sound still came back as well. I hear it\'s something to do with the calipers. They grease the caliper pins apparently but it\'s only a temporary fix.

Jay3, I get the rear-brake popping sound as well. It happens just when I press the brake pedal, and happens when going forward. And it\'s not the caliper TSB (that\'s for something else and my car was after that VIN range anyways).
One literally needs to turn off the radio and possibly even open a window to hear it (that\'s how silent it is). I find it most prevalent in situations where I need to press the brakes a lot but press them gently (i.e. not a panic stop).
To me it almost feels like it\'s the hydraulics in the brake system - possibly an air bubble in the system or something. I\'m not too concerned about it though - braking performance is fine and the brakes visually look fine. If it gets worse, I\'ll notify the dealer.

hmmm...I think I have the same problem but I\'m not sure what i\'m hearing is a \"pop\". It sounds like screeching and it happens mostly when I\'m in reverse and I brake...
When I first picked up the car, I didn\'t have the sound but after a week I noticed the sound. It happened after taking my car to Rustcheck so I\'m not sure if thats related. Maybe their rust protection spray got on to the brake and rotors and its causing this sound...
You guys are not alone tho with this sound...
