View Full Version : Fuel Economy from Second Fill-Up
Hey all, just wanted to share this as I just filled up my tank (second time in the car\'s life from my hands/wallet) tonight at 65.5 and here\'s my numbers;
445.2 kilometres driven since last fill-up (July 28th)
42.592 L at fill-up, nozzle auto stop and no more additional fuel
= 9.57 L/100km
= 24.56 MPG
I had driven highway as well as city roads since last fill-up. I was aggressive most of the time and had the engine up to 4K rpms on occasion.
It\'s been 11 full days since pick-up and I\'ve clocked only 800 km on it. :(

I picked up my car last Wednesday and drove a ton this past weekend being the long weekend and all. I put 650km\'s on it in the past 5 days and the fuel light finally came on. Not too shabby for the first tank of gas and it will get better as time progresses.
650km to warning light? That sounds very good to me! You\'re saying fuel economy gets better over time? Or your driving will be more granny-like over time? :p
Thanks for the info Snipes!

My fuel light came on at 540km this tank. Given that I went to Brantford and Kitchener last week with all the highway driving..... I think I can push it up to 640km before I have to call CAA for my free emergency gas.
On average I only do 10.7km/L.... not too well.

My driving on the weekend was all HWY and it pulled about 14.44Km/L. I also have a standard which would help my gas mileage but i drove a lot with my windows down which would lower my gas mileage.

For the GX with automatic, as per Mazda/Canadian Fuel Consumption Guide, the expected readings should be from 6.4-9.1L/100km
For me so far, the first fill was 9.38 (mostly city, and a lot of test-drives with friends).
The second fill 6.83 (mainly highway with the AC on).
The third was 7.29 (mixed of highway and city, but more city, and the AC was on most of the time).
I have be driving like grandma, but now that I have passed the break-in period, that may change…

I normally drive to Michigan every other week and I have noticed that it\'s around 600kms before the Fuel warning light comes on. :)

I recently took my 3 on a trip to Sauble Beach and could finally test the fuel economy on just highway alone. So my resluts are 512km and 45L which comes out to 8.79L/100km or 11.38L/km and that\'s with overtaking every car I saw. :D

11.38km/L (I sure hope not 11.38L/km!) just highway, that makes my 10.7km/L reasonable. I do lots of city/highway mix.
I passed almost all the cars I saw during my vacation to northern ontario and eventrually I got ticketed... :(

Haha, 11.38L/km would be bad, stupid typo, but yeah, I meant to say 11.38km/L

I previously posted in another topic that I was getting an average of just under 10L/100km consistently over a period of driving 2000+ km. Everytime I filled up the gas tank, I would see how many kilometres I drove and how much gas was needed to fill the tank to capacity again. That would give you the exact mileage everytime.

I\'ve done that, I have an excel spreadsheet set up for it. I average 9.45L/100km. Lowest is 8.75L/100km highest is 10.20L/100km

Hehe......I\'ve been averaging 7.3L/100KM in my 2.0 :p.....so how much faster is the 2.3 anyways :)

My first tank pulled off 650 (all highway) till the light came on. My second tank pulled off 610 and that was 75% highway. I am now on my third tank and currently have 600km on it and can probably get another 80 till the light comes on. Looks like this car is going to be very fuel efficient.
2.3 here :)

Third fill up info;
431.4 km since last fill-up
40.497 L at fill-up, nozzle auto stop
= 9.39 L/100km
= 25.05 MPG
I would think it would be a little bit worse fuel economy since I raced the engine a lot more... hmm...

Huh?
I think you made a mistake somewhere, there is no way 9.39L/100km is 30mpg (Edit: ok it is if it\'s UK gallons:P) :)
9.39 L/100km = 25.0494765 miles per gallon
I just did 466km using 37.2L of fuel -- guess I still had like 100km more to go before refuel. 7.98283262L/100km = 29.4650528 miles per gallon.
Most was city driving.

Check here for the conversion from L/100 km to MPG: http://www.onlineconversion.com/fuel_consumption.htm
I divide 235.2209 by (L/100km) so it should be 235.2209/9.39 = 25.05 MPG
SH*T I was using miles per gallon UK!!! Damn the States. :)
I\'ve edited my posts to correct the MPG numbers.
Thanks to catch it, guys/gals.

I use google, just type in \"8L/100km in mpg\" for the search and it will convert it:)

LOLZ - everyone\'s getting confused around here.
Newlook stated that he was getting 11.7 km/L which is equivalent to 8.547 L/100 km which is equivalent to 27.52 mpg. :)

With my 2.0 i\'m averaging about 13.8km/L and if i did the math right that works out to 7.0L/100km. Not too shabby eh.

Latest figure:
7.5L/100kms, about 200kms out of 500+ highway only
I managed 560 on a tank today...drove to the US and Niagara and back.

Just filled up last night and my last tank got me 725km\'s per 45L. Sweet eh. I love this car. With that 725 that works out to 6.2L/100Km. This car just keeps getting better. Imagine what would happen if I drove my car a little more granny like.

Holy crap that\'s awesome mileage!!! But then, driving a Mazda3 granny-like is the same principle behind getting car insurance but usually leaving the car home in the garage. :(

In my sense granny like is more like not revving it hard off the line and accelerating quickly. Also includes not racing the civic that lines up beside you. Another aspect for a granny is dropping to 120km/h on the highways instead of the 140 that i do.

I\'m getting a little confused... Snipes, are you the one useing that fuel additive too?

3. 140 [km/h on highway].
1. Guilty
2. Haven\'t done since a while ago (early Aug.) when I was tauted (?) by three other drivers on different occasions and I (stupidly) raced them.
3. We all do 140 on the highway, don\'t we? Granny like would be more of 90 and not 120 :)

Xenon - yes I am the one that uses the fuel additive and it works amazing.

Actually it is. 9.39 L/100 km equals 30 mpg (Canadian, which is exactly the same as UK).

That\'s true, but in Canada, we use UK MPG, and not States!
I\'d rather follow what majority of members post as their MPG (US) in this forum and Mazda3Forums.com otherwise I\'ll be in the dork spotlight. :)
Is there any accurate method to calculate mileage WITHOUT having to fill up the tank?

not really since the gauges are analog and it\'s hard to be exact.. you can eyeball it but then again the fuel gauge is always funny.. depends on the cars.. it might go down slow till 1/2 tank and then plummet.. so best is to fill up each time and then u\'ll know

The things I sacrifice to get numbers... gas is hella expensive these few days and with tomorrow\'s meet and cruise to Oakville (and then back to Markham after BBQ) I will definitely need to get gas... but at that price... I\'m reluctant to fill all the way. :(

but u know what.. it\'s called the law of averages.. one day you\'ll find a wicked deal but you\'ll be at FULL and can\'t really take advantage of it.. another day you\'ll be on empty and there\'s nothing withing 100km radius that\'s less than 90c..
for example.. ever since NOV \'03 we\'ve paid on average 74c/L ranging from 57.4 to 87.4 (i keep a spreadsheet ;) ) so in the end it\'ll all average out .. so I just fill up when the light goes on up to 80-100 km later.. somewhere you\'re bound to find a decent price and if not.. oh well. it\'ll cost you more to go across the town to get a deal than to fill up next to your house.. and if you use shell or esso.. the more you speend the more rewards you get :P :D
i know.. i wish we saw prices of 60c/L and stuff but yah.. ain\'t happening soon...

oh eat a sock wtom...gas for car owners is a necessity...no matter if your gonna cheap out and put $5 in or whatever amount...its not worth yoru time to be putting that in....might as well fill all the way up....the last meet and all lthat...i went thru a half tank, filling up before i left kitchener.....no biggie...its a necessity...we\'re gonna buy it...expensive or cheap...
