View Full Version : TMIC - Does core size really matter ?

So I was planning to purchase a CPe TMIC for my 2010 Speed 3. I originally chose this over the Corksport TMIC as the CPe had a core size of 3.25" and the CS had a 3" core size, and I figured it would cool a bit better.
However, now I find out CPe is back ordered(on many items) as they are moving to a new production facility.

I don't really want to wait for the CPe TMIC as it could be two weeks or two months, pending CPe resuming production.

Leaves me with two options
1)Go with the corksport TMIC - is the .25" core size going to make a difference ?
2)Spend ~$600 instead of ~$400 and buy the ETS TMIC - not ideal, but if it will make a significant difference I would consider.

Thoughts ?

for what you're looking to get out of the car, it won't make a difference

fywdyl is running the corksport TMIC and he has well over 350 whp

Honestly I'd imagine the difference would be near impossible to detect even on the dyno. Both are nice enough that so long as you're staying on the k04 I wouldn't care which one.

fywdyl's TMIC from corksport did crack though.....

Just wait for the cpe. The price is good. Also I think there are a few members with the cpe TMIC that are considering FMIC...

I currently have the Corksport TMIC on the car and you certainly feel a difference in response vs stock ... can't tell you the difference between CPe and Corksport for TMIC, but I made my choice because I like the fact I can mount the stock shroud over it (which I did).

I'm contemplating switching cars in the near future, so let me know if you're in the market for a used but well taken care of Corksport TMIC.

It cracked cuz I torqued it down too much. Partly due to install error, but partly because the CS TMIC doesn't sit flush on the mounting points.

Was it the boost tubes pushing it outta wack?

Yeah, I have a practically brand new TMIC from cp-e sitting in my room. Had it on my car for 2 days before I took it off and brought my car in for warranty work. I'm considering selling this and will sell to you S.F.W. if you want... just waiting for hear back from Fack_Dude about his FMIC.

oh, and it's for a gen 1.. .but I'm pretty sure it will fit the gen 2 without the shroud.

Interesting that CS sells the shroud alone. I wonder if CPe will do the same ?

Yes and no.

The bracket just doesn't sit flush, if the back side does, the front side doesn't.

if he doesn't take it I will; I've been waiting for someone to sell theirs for a while now.

I have the ETS TMIC with shroud which I installed a couple weeks ago along with JBR tubes and the fit is good.

You do have to work the fittings in place and ensure the tubes are in the correct position to make everything fall into place. Having someone help hold the TMIC over the engine while you work the fittings in place and tighten things down evenly (not tightening one side all the way and moving to the next side) helps. Also ensure you take the rubber washers and caps from the stock and put them on the aftermarket set points where the fasteners go.

Another suggestion since the tmic core is thicker is to seal the vent holes on the plastic hood seal that sits on the inside of the hood scoop around the back and passenger side. This forces more air directly down and through the tmic core toward the engine.

If CPE is backordered and says it'll be 2 weeks or 2 months I'd be prepared to wait about 5. I got the run around for an entire season waiting for my TMIC and a $150 bill at the door from UPS for customs/brokerage on top of the all-in shipping and taxes price from CPE. Sold it within a year and went FMIC. Shoulda done that in the first place. Doesn't matter who makes it, they all heatsoak and the aftermarket one's are all much heavier which sucks in its own right but that also means that the extra thick metal/aluminum holds the heat even longer and takes longer to cool down than the flimsy tincan stocker. Improved flow up top from 4500-6000 will be noticeable but your BATS will still be high. Buy a used FMIC for the same price, pick it up local, **** taxes and shipping. It's piping, a core, tubes and clamps, not a lot of moving to parts to worry about. My .02.

The cp-e tmic does not suffer from heat soak as bad as the stock intercooler and the heat dissipates very quickly once you get airflow

If speaking exclusively about weight Id rather have the extra weight on top on the engine than have it in front of the front wheels in the bumper which is the case for the FMIC. Also FMIC cores aren't light either.

As for BATS, the TMIC does heatsoak. While in the staging area I am seeing 150-160 degrees but once I start moving within a few seconds it drops down to 110-120. But I am also gen2 so not sure how much the hood scoop is playing a factor in that.

hood scoop is good, but the heat on my CP-e TMIC dissipated very quickly.

You can see this if you go for a hard run, let the car sit for a little bit and touch the intercooler. Burning hot. But then drive for a little bit and try touching again and it is cool to the touch.

The stock TMIC just stays hot hot hot

see I found the opposite. I always thought my CPE TMIC felt hella hot, especially those solid end tanks. But whatever, its anecdotal and I'll accept maybe thats not the case. Someone mentioned BATS dropping quickly off the line with their TMIC, try a FMIC if you want to watch shit get cold quick. FMIC FMIC FMIC!!! :)
