2005 mazda 3 check engine light - drives fine. answers?

trying to do my emissions test but i have my check engine light on. its been on for years because i cant really find the problem thats causing the light to come on. not into spending money guessing what the problem is. car drives and functions fine.. 2.0 automatic. any suggestions?
