We currently have a 3 year old Black & Decker battery powered trimmer which works till this day but I'm thinking of giving it away to my parents. What do you guys have? What I do know is I would like to keep it battery powered.

I prefer corded. To be honest, they all **** up eventually, so don't spend a lot. None of those "auto-feed" things work forever.

Better to buy a new one every few years than spend a lot for a 'premium' one.

Yeah, that's a good approach. How are you liking the corded one? Isn't it a hassle or it's just a matter of getting used to? I don't see myself spending much on this tops $150 but could settle with something cheaper.

IMHO - Buy a premium one. The one at the cottage is like 10yrs old, and has seen way more use than most will ever see in a home setting. No issues at all. I have had the same model for 6yrs at home. Both have had NO issues, and the "Auto-feeds" still work flawlessly.

Mine are gas, so I don't have much input on battery ones :)

Buying a gas trimmer is like buying a riding lawn mower: great for large properties, but pointless for the average home.

I just like the cord because I've had problems with tools (or the batteries, rather) overheating. Some tools are fine with battery power, like drills or nailers. Other tools, like grinders or saws, where there's a big 'surge' of power followed by a sustained draw, tend to over heat the battery.

Ever turn a tool on at home and have the lights flicker? The battery version of that tool does the same thing to the battery.

Rona has a Black and Decker 3 in one trimmer on sale for $99 that's usually $170.

It's a trimmer and a leaf blower, vaccumm all in one.......pretty good deal.

As far as durability I've had a B&D trimmer now for like 15 years and it's still going strong.....

Maybe I misread the sign and it is only a 2 in 1......70 bucks off regardless.....not bad

Whatever brand of trimmer you buy, verify how the line can be refilled.
Some can be done by simply replacing the cartridge ( if so how much/unit and is it readily available as opposed to proprietary) while others you can refill yourself with just the line ( verify thickness/gauge of the line used).

I have a Rona housebrand corded trimmer. It works great but the line refill cartridge is proprietary. I tried to replenish by manually spooling new line into the cartridge case and it is a major PITA. Rona locations have been reduced greatly in the GTA region i.e. the closest one to me is way over by Eglington & Winston Churchill so I can't exactly scoot over for a fast pick-up.

UPDATE***

Had to place an order for it to be shipped out. 2 locations out my area did not have it! Probably worth considering cause of the 2 for 1 deal! Great find and thanks again!

Should've just hired my gardener

I got a corded B&D trimmer for a house warming gift 6 years ago. It does it's job I guess.

I want to try a gas powered one - cause it looks like it would do a better job at actually edging by the sidewalk

Yeah my gardener used a gas powered trimmer, and it edged so crisp compared to my corded B&D (he still does the other houses on the street - and theirs looks so clean)

I know you ordered one already but I figured I would throw my input in as well.

My dad and I swear by Stihl. We have been using Stihl gas powered line trimmers on our 2 acre property for years now. They do a great job, and last. They do a ton of work.

That being said Stihl also has an electric line trimmer as well.

they also have a pretty decent looking Li-Ion line of yard tools

Nice and total see how that would be practical. But I live in a residential area so I can easily function with a battery operated verson.

Update*

So the B&D model I ordered earlier this week for $99 went up to $109 for some bizarre reason... (original $169)

*** UPDATE ***

So the B&D trimmer & blower combo which I ordered a month ago is no longer available! Long story short they couldn't get it at their store so I'm SOL! One thing is for sure I told them off and will never ever be shopping their again! (Rona in Oshawa = Fack them! :flaming)

Not sure what to get cause the Ryobi combo which was on a sale a couple weeks back is no longer available and now I'm just thinking of probably just getting a gas powered trimmer FML!

Are craftsmen just as solid as their mowers are?

Think I'd still like to keep it within the $100-$200 range which will probably get me f... all. Any ideas? :(
