View Full Version : Does Anybody Else Hate the Flip Key?

This is the first vehicle I've owned that uses the flip/switchblade key system. At first I thought it was very cool (you know - a badass with a switchblade), but now it's getting on my nerves.
I find that it'll randomly open in my pocket and when wearing my work/dress pants there is enough room for it to open and then stab/pinch the side of my leg. Unlike the traditional key, the black fob gives it a nice supportive base for it to stay upright and stab away.
My friend who also just got a 2011 3 just texted me staying it just kneed his key till in the ignition and cracked the black housing. I can totally see this happening because it seems like a pretty flimsy design. I've hit it with my knee too.
Random, but just wanna hear opinions!

You would have to be spazzing out to hit your key with your knee. I am 6' and while it is close to my knee I have never hit it (or paid any special attention to it).
I have also never had mine open up in my pocket and I've had it in my pocket nearly every day for 3 years.
You and your friend are doing something wrong.

It has opened up in my pocket. Reasons unknown.
Actually I prefer how my Outlander works. You can keep the key in your pocket and start it up. You can also unlock doors just by touching the door handle.

The 3 has this in the upper models. It's fantastic, fob in pocket and never ever have to touch it.

"what's what? OH! No, it's not what you think, my flip key opened in my pocket."

I opened it once in a parking lot and an old lady grabbed her purse with both hands and made a weird whimper/grunt noise.

He'd have had to put the key in her pocket first, then it would stab her. That's how it works.

Lol at all the sarcastic responses. Clearly you all never let the small things get to you - teach me.
I guess I have a defective key fob. And its very easy to knee the key when its in the ignition and I'm only 5'10.

staax,
I know what you're saying as I have almost touched the key several times when in the ignition, but it is a rare occurrence. I do also find it opens in my pocket from time to time if that little button is pressed. It's annoying sure, but unfortunately part of the ownership experience. You could try getting a regular Mazda 3 key fob programmed for the car, but I am unsure if that is possible.

If the key stayed closed in my pocket I wouldn't have an issue. And its not that big of a deal, especially not big enough to buy a new key and fob separately.
Glad to see I'm not alone!

My original gen Juan key is identical to my faimiles old MPV. I don't hate the flip key, I'd rather have one. If it comes undone in your pocket, get a new one. Shouldn't be too pricey.
Also I have a Mitsubishi VCR from the 90s and it works flawlessly.

Yeah getting a new one isn't really an option.
I was just wondering how many other people have keys that open in their pocket, and also if I'm the only retard that gets stabbed by the key.
For those of you who don't spend a lot of time in dress pants, you don't know just how much room are in the pockets Lol.

I have the issue from time to time but I usually don't keep my car key in my pant pocket. It usually goes in to my jacket or workbag so I don't have to worry about it. I hate bulk in my pockets (wallet, cellphone) when I'm wearing dress pants. The only time the flip key bugs me if sand gets stuck in it (I play a lot of beach). Sometimes I have to spend 10-15 minutes trying to dislodge the sand so I can start my car.
to add... If i'm with my gf, the keys goes in to her handbag.

06-20-2014, 02:49 PM
If you have an aftermarket alarm / fob go get a "plain" or "valet" key from the dealer to have a key without the fob. It's pretty damn cheap - I would if I had an aftermarket system. I've confirmed it can be done because I bought my car used and it only had one key. Called the dealer with the VIN and was given 2 options: flip key ($$$ through dealer), or plain key ($ through dealer).
I ordered a blank flip key off ebay and had the dealer cut and program it to the car - total was under $100. Programming is the expensive part, and can be done yourself if you already have 2 keys.

I have my key flip open on occasion. I find I fiddle with it too much in my pocket. I spend 10 hours a day at work in dress pants and open and close it as I am walking around on my tours etc. I need to keep my hands busy at all times. lol. I have never stabbed myself though (wouldn't this happen less with a key that spends most of its time in a bulkier piece anyway???) and I am 6'1 and my knee comes no where close to the key while driving. I am one of those people that puts the seat all the way back though so my leg has less bend. Long story short I don't care what type of key it is as long as I don't have to replace it. I bought a used focus once with only one set of keys. Three days after buying it someone stole my jacket with the keys in it and I had to go through the whole reprogramming etc. $450 to do. Keys are stupid expensive now.

I find that the bulky black base (or fob) that the key sits in gives it the strength/sturdiness to stay upright as I'm sitting down and therefore stab/pinch the side of my leg. Maybe I have stupidly big pockets, I dunno or maybe I'm just stupid (other members lead me to believe this is the truth).
As for the key hitting the knee, I think it's because I like to have the steering wheel angled low. I put the seat all the back back and my knee was only 3 inches from the key. I hate having my arms on an angle to reach the steering wheel. My Grand Prix gave me the option to ride thug and I'm never going back!
My Dakota is a regular cab so I don't have too much room to move back (sit with seat all the way back) and the steering wheel isn't adjustable. I guess I just learned how to get used to it over time.

Yeah probably depends on how to sit. My keys hanging down off my car key dont even get close to my knee.
As for pocket stabbing. Maybe use a elastic band?
