So, I think I jumped the gun a little................I did read up on all the posts regarding this issue (eventualy) but have not been able to find a solid answer.
I bought the aux cord before I realised I had a TAPE/MD deck, so I went to the wreckers and got a deck with the MEDIA button only to find out that I was missing the harness for the LCD display in my car. The old non-media deck has a harness coming from the radio itself to the LCD display. Its the same single CD non Bose HU I believe. I want to keep the factory HU for the steering wheel controls but want to be able to listen to my I-pod/I-phone 4S.
I took the MEDIA button back and checked a few others. It seems as tho all the TAPE/MD HU's are the same, one white plug verses the two white plugs on the MEDIA HU's. The missing one in my car goes direct from the dash loom to the LCD display sitting on top of the radio.
Its a 2005 Sedan sport.
If the only way to connect my I-pod is the GTA carkits I will spend the money but I just need confirmation that it will work with my TAPE/MD deck.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I believe the Auxmod will do the same as the GTA carkits and cheaper by a couple bucks, But witht he Tape/MD button you can't use the cheaper Aux cord.

Thanks a lot for your input, Thats the answer I needed. I guess I just have to go with a Proper kit.

the aux cord SHOULD work fine on your original head unit... just plug it in and press the CD button twice and it should switch over
why did you spend money on another head unit that wouldn't work even if you had everything without asking here first?

Yeah, that's what I thought too but it didn't.
Not a big problem, I got a full refund anyway.
I think I will go with a Grom/GTA carkits to be able to charge and control the I-pod fully.

the ONE thing i dont like about it is the ipod plug...its one of the big ones, so if you have a case on your iphone/ipod it might not fit.
to give you an idea on my setup, i cut a small hole for the ipod cable to come out. a proclip mount holds an old ipod which i use for the car only. (the actual clamp is actually a $5 generic phone mount thats double sided taped onto the proclip)

its clean, its simple, it works

I have a GTA car kit that I no longer need. Willing to let it go for $40. It has the 9 pin connector though, so you would need a lightning adapter if you have a 5/5S/5C

Thanks, I just read this now. Unfortunately I picked one up from GTA last Friday.

The GTA car kits would not work so I returned it. Has anyone else had a problem installing an I-pod connection kit? I don't want to buy a Grom kit if it's going to work either. Its for a 2005 Mazda 3 saloon 2.3, does anyone have the Grom Kit installed in exactly the same car?

If you have tried all this and still have not got it why not trying an aftermarket HU. Simple to install and better sound quality.

Just curious...which radio do you have exactly? I got a spare radio that works flawlessly with my from and I know there's a couple different tyoes. Not sure if it plays a roll or not..

its a fatory deck with the "tape/MD" button. Only one large white wiring harness and the antenna plug into the back.

04-06 HU then. So pretty sure that would be the same as yours Sam. Unless there is some weird difference in them but you never know. Anyway take a look at aftermarket and go from there. http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd68/jaimiemazda08/IMG-20131227-00043.jpg
This is what mine looks like. Only thing I don't like is the fact I don't have the temperature gauge anymore. But I like it.
