Im going to be taking the full light assembly out on both my sedan and hatch tonight. But that looks like rust behind the lamp. The first gens had a bad time with this issue as well!

Thanks for the post - show us the damage after you pull the lights out if you don't mind.

I found on the hatch the spoiler did that but it was slight. So o saded it and used the paint pen and clear. Hasnt come back. I think i may do the same with this. Dont want mazda painting my whole trunk.. but i can swap it for the bumper then sure! Just need to see what my bodyshop can do.

i didnt take pictures of it but i painted it with a touch up pen, put some foam over it. and put the lights back on. its not the best but hey. it will do. if it rusts out by next year.. maybe we will see what mazda will do. keep in mind warranty pays for perforation NOT surface rust. and im sure it would be a fight to say the lights rubbing it caused it.. just because it seems staff at most of the stores is.. well anyway. keep your eyes open

i didnt pull mine out, but i gave it a very close look. and nothing there.. yet. but i fear the 2nds gens may have the 1st gen issues.. :(

rustproofed every year?

its been rustproofed when it was purchased. the whole underbody and behind the panels is still rustproofed, looks like it did the day it was done. first thing i looked at it if it was going from the inside out. but it was just from the lamp rubbing on the trunk lid. just like the last gen. a good old flaw in design.. lets make the lights when tight close enough to contact the body of the car. i put some foam between the light and body of car so hopefully... it wont happen again.
