I'm rocking a z10. Yes im happy with my phone. Plus it's secure and apple can't compete with that! You know.... anyways I heard something about a iPhone 6 release sometime soon. I also heard that they may have a 'smart watch' or probably 'I watch' to pair with the phone. Idk why, there should be more originality than that as samsung has been there and done that

Samsung just announced I think their 5th smart watch in the last year or so.
Apple's Sep 9 announcement stream: http://9to5mac.com/2014/09/04/apple-announces-live-stream-for-sept-9-iphone-event/
Should be announcing the new 4.5" iPhone 6 and potentially the iWatch.

Still on my Nexus 4. The battery is not what it used to be (smaller anyways) but i charge it at wotk regulary and still make it through the day.
I'm looking at getting the new Google phone: moto shamu/ nexus 6/ nexus x in the new year sometime.
In the meantime: I'm thinking of getting the Android L Dev preview before the actual update drops...... Whenever that happens :(
And Switched my runtime from Dalvic to ART and the animations look amazing with 4.4.4.

Currently on an iPhone 5s (going to hold off until the 6s for an upgrade) and won an LG G3 at work. Quite honestly I've been an Apple guy through and through until I put my hands on the G3 - definitely has a bunch of great features that anyone would like and it's stupid fast. Lastly, my parents were nice enough to give me a Nexus 7 tablet as a birthday gift and I love the customization abilities and really being able to make it your own.
As for watches - definitely in the loop for a Moto 360. In my opinion, the sleekest and most simple-looking interface and it goes a long way. Can't wait to get my hands on one.
...I think I just lost my Apple-ness :chuckle

S5 is reportedly to be a lot better than the s4. S4 broke at a 7ft drop whereas the s5 was fine at the 10 foot drop and after being ran over with an suv. S5 survived 1 hr in a pool and survived after a trip in a 50 min cycle in a washing machine. Only opened once to get a tiny bit of water out then re sealed and put back in.
That's just one YouTube reviewers findings.

Also, with Art, go into animations and turn it from 1x to 0.5x; it becomes even snappier!

Hardware Upgrades via Rogers is a pain now, though. They require you to be on one of their new Data Plans and have monthly bill of at least $80 to do a HUP. I'm on the 6 GB Super Plan for $60 less credits; I asked about a HUP and they said I need to be on their new, ridiculously priced plans to do so. No way I'm giving up my plan.
Because of that, I only buy phones outright now; HUPing isn't worth it anymore.
I thought that's what you liked?
I loved the Z2, but seeing Sony release three Xperia Z1/2/3 phones in 1.5 years with minor revisions hasn't been too exciting. Was hoping for maybe a shorter phone (top and bottom bezels are kind of big), better speaker, and ability to have a higher resolution with the 20.7mp camera using Superior Auto.
You can only get 20.7 MP if you use manual mode, but manual doesn't have the neat modes like night time or outdoors (limited to 8 MP...).

Tell me about it, I bought the Z1 and I was pissed when I somehow managed to make a dent on the speaker grille. Guess what they did with the Z2? Replaced the speaker grille with drilled holes on the bezel :bang
I don't mind the screen being a VA panel, but it was literally a screen lottery for the Z1 since some people got an IPS screen while others got the VA. Guess what? Z2 is pure IPS :bang
The Z3 is more than just a clock speed improvement. It has a higher water resistance (still finding it funny how people treat this as a underwater camera, I blame Sony for marketing it like that), hi-res audio (which was rumoured for the Z1 for a physical DAC S-Master MX, but I think the Z3 is only software and not hardware), higher ISO for the camera, and PS4 remote play.
What I dislike about Sony's upgrade path is how they physically change the phone twice within one year. It's worse than buying a car, which at least does minor revisions maybe every year or two.

If SirWanker already has a large catalog of iTunes stuff (or owns an iPhone, etc), might be better to stay in the same ecosystem. One of my big drawbacks from switching from iOS to Android was the loss of all my content.
Though, on iOS, everything is provided for you.
On Android, everything is available to you.
NVIDIA Shield Tablet has a very, very nice stylus for doodling and writing, btw. It's one of the stronger features of the device.
- $299 (cheap, relative to iPad)
- Watching media should be more enjoyable (if not using headphones) due to the front facing speakers, plus the Shield has speakers coming out from the back and sides
- Ability to get a controller and either play Cloud games, or stream games from your NVIDIA Card
- Camera is decent; both the front and back use the same sensor, I believe, so selfies should be good
http://store.nvidia.com/buyshield
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PNp2IjVv3HI
Cameras on tablets, you won't find anything ground breaking like Sony's 20.7 MP or other cameras, but they're very passable. Nothing like an Instagram Filter to fix it right up.

Yeah, iPhone 5 has been plagued with issues. Main ones have been battery issues (drainage) and the lock/sleep button not responding. My iPhone 5 ran into the latter issue where it started to become unresponsive, then it just flat out died. Needed to lock my screen using accessibility, and if it got shut off, I had to plug it in to get it back on.

Go for S5! 👍

If I move away from ios to android, do I lose all the apps I paid for or will I get their android versions?
Nope sadly. Apple nor Google would ever make transferring their paid content away from their company that easy.
Depends really how vast your library is, and if you can let go of a bunch of apps.
When i jumped ship: It was a fresh start.

With android you can download the apk version online for freeeeeeee😃 :D:D
Never pay for An app again.
The s5 hasn't crashed for me yet. My s2 didn't even crash much until the end of its life about 3 months ago.
Still lightning quick and battery life isn't too shabby either.

So iPhone 6 will be announced soon, and would be out in the market shortly. What's everyone's opinion on it? I'd really want to get a new phone as my ancient Google Nexus is really starting to fail me at times.
Not sure how anyone is going to have an opinion on a phone that isn't released when Apple is notorious for being tight-lipped before launch.
I'm still very happy with my HTC One. Best Android I've owned (HTC Desire, Motorola Razr, Galaxy S3).

Not as bad as when the iPhone 4 got leaked (left at a bar, Gizmodo found it, then they went ham on Gizmodo and barred them from press conferences, lol). Still, leaks have been trickling through steadily each week. Wondering if maybe Apple was purposely leaking bits to generate hype or not.

The only things I enjoyed from Apple were:
- Using Touch ID + NFC to pay for things, which is actually nice because I only pay at Starbucks with the app
- Apple Watch's crown (I like how you can zoom in and out without touching the screen; watch faces are small enough as is and don't need fingers in the way)
Otherwise, kind of meh. Based on early hands-on impressions, people are okay with the 4.7" and find the 5.5" too large.
Also, what is up with the crappy 1810 mAh battery in the 4.7"... the Nexus 5 had 2300 mAh and I struggled to get a day out of that thing.

Best solution is to get a battery case like a Mophie Juicepack (or replica) . When I had an iPhone 4 I had one of those and you flick a switch when you need a full charge and you're good to go, so convenient.
It actually amplified the speakers sound much like the HTC M8 by redirecting it in a forward direction with the cases structure.

That looks legit.
Cases making up for the phones short comings.
Being such a premium brand with superior build quality, why couldn't they put an adequate battery for that price? 2300 mAh minimum.
MY friends boyfriend has a note 2 with that huge baterry case and he can go weeks without charging. Would really like one.

My Nexus 5 charged really bad when I didn't use the proper charger (i.e. tried Mini USB + iPad Brick). How are you charging it? Stock Brick + Mini USB?
It charged super, super fast using the BlackBerry Wall Charger (cost about $3-4 on Amazon). Took about 70 minutes or so to get from 0 to 100%.

But then the phone gets added height and bulk without screen size increase. Not a fan of having to pay a premium price for an iPhone, then pay a premium on top to get better battery. It's the same reason why I opt to go no case on phones, haha. I prefer the slim, slender stock look.

The hot iPhone seems to be the iPhone 6 Plus. The iPhone 6 was selling for $1,000-$1,200 on Friday, but prices seem to have collapsed down to sub-$1,000 ($890 minimum now).
With Rogers' stupid requirement to be on a new $80 Share Plan (500 MB) in order to HUP, best way to get this phone would probably be to wait a month or so for prices to fall below MSRP and buy from someone who did a HUP.

Tried out the new iPhones in FutureShop this past weekend.
iPhone 6 feels great; the sizing is perfect (maybe 5" would be more ideal to match the Nexus 5), but 4.7" is still good. Very light.
iPhone 6+ feels big. Reminds me a lot of the iPad Mini; something about the scaling on the screen... I thought maybe they would adjust the icon sizes or number of them, but it just looks like a ballooned version of the iPhone.

On my 5S I've noticed it's a little bit worse, mind you I think IOS8 automatically turns on certain features that were off in IOS7. Still have to play around with it and find out how I can stretch a day and a half again.
Since I was off this past weekend I wasn't able to get my hands on one but I sold quite a few yesterday and the 4.7 6 feels amazing. I haven't received any Plus' at this point, but I'm curious to see how much bigger it'll be. I hear you ;) Keep in mind that the days of "bricking" your phone from a failed root attempt are over. In fact, Cyanogenmod has an installer that does everything for you. You go from a bloated 1.9 GB stock ROM install from whatever cell phone carrier you're with, to a sweet 200 MB custom ROM that improves battery life and without any of the bloatware installed by samsung/your carrier.
The other great thing about rooting and switching out your ROMs is that it's a free, easy way to make you feel like you have a new phone. I'm running CM11 (Cyanogenmod 11) on my Galaxy S3 which is Android 4.4 (the newest Android software available). If you want to read more on it, check out their site. Rooting the phone shouldn't wipe everything. The nice thing about rooting is that you can then install an app called Titanium Backup, which will allow you to make a backup (including settings, save games, etc.) of all your apps. I use Titanium BU and an app called SMS Backup and Restore to backup everything, any time I need to wipe my phone.

Basically when you get a new Android phone, unlock the bootloader first before you start restoring data. Then you never have to worry about it later. You can choose to root any time.
There are exploits that potentially unlock the bootloader without losing data if you're running old versions. But you should still back up everything

it's not that big a deal. Since everything would be synced to your gmail account, when you first log into the phone with a fresh rom, your apps should start automatically downloading and your contacts will also start downloading so those would be fine, if there's any specific apps whose settings or configurations you don't want to lose, check if they have an export function.
you could also try a backup app that doesn't require root to save what you have then once you're get root go to titanium since it's the best.

No problem, glad you like it! Keep in mind that right now CM11 isn't a stable release for the S5 yet so it likely won't work when using the installer. Having said that, you could always use a beta-monthly build although there can be some weird bugs. But having said that, I would be surprised if the S5 didn't get added to the installer soon as a supported device.
Also remember, there are TONS of other custom ROMs out there, don't be afraid to try them out! I suggested CM mainly because it's the most popular one going and has a ton of support available online.
it's not that big a deal.
Also, rooting your phone shouldn't wipe anything off of your SD Card if that's where you had your downloads/photos saved to. Google also makes the sync with your account after doing a clean install of a ROM pretty painless.

true, you can always move what you want to keep to the SD card and remove it while installing a new rom

Smart move. With the new plans now being as they are, the additional cost of buying a phone outright in order to save both a monthly increases + lose services is well worth it.
I'm on a plan that's $59 tax-in for 6 GB. Rogers wanted me to switch to a $80+tax plan that gives me 500 MB in order for me to do a hardware upgrade. Yeah, not happening...

Nexus 4 is 4.7" though, so this would be a huge upgrade. My biggest gripes with big phones is the width. I don't have the largest hands in the world so when the phones get wider, it's both tougher for one hand use and tougher to hold. I would definitely see if you can try out a 5.5" phone for a bit and see if you like the size. I think 5.95" is too extreme; it may be attractive now but over time it might cause issues (after that initial honeymoon phase).

On a side note, I went to the ACC last night for the Leafs pre-season game and they had the BlackBerry Passport on display. Wow, is that thing ****ing huge. It's neat and I'm glad BlackBerry is building more unique looking devices, but damn that thing is wide.

You're right it is wider. I agree it is a huge jump from 4 to 6 size wise... I'm mainly looking for a stock 5" Android phone that doesn't need rooting for a cheaper price than the usual flagships. Maybe the N5 will get a decent price drop when then 6 comes out.

Long term that is more economical anyway. You pay a lot more up front, say $500 for phone instead of $200. But with Rogers/Bell you pay ~$20-$30 more a month for a phone for two years. Thus you are paying $800(25*24 + 200) for the phone instead of $500.

I feel like I've gotten the shaft lately from Samsung. A year and a half ago I replaced my Blackberry Torch after the battery fried and got the Samsung Note i717 (first Gen). Now my Samsung battery is on the same path to piss-me-right-off land with a battery that lasts maybe oh say...3 hours. Got the home charger, car charger and one at work just in case. If you've seen my videos, I use it a lot to do just that.
My plan is up in June 3rd and I can't wait! I'm seriously hoping by then there is a phone that has the kind of durability I need. Like bring me back the Nokia brick-type quality. I ordered a battery off Ebay hoping it will get me through.
Even further to disappoint...The Samsung Tab 3 I purchased for my son stopped charging. It's about 6 months old! I sent it to them for repair.
Let's hope my Smart TV holds up....

"Big phones" are to merge Tablets and phones into one device. In some countries a lot of people prefer having one device for various reasons. Some also consume a lot of TV shows, media on the go.
But the trend is bigger phones, which Apple also has to release two sizes to fulfill the market.

The price is warranted for what you are getting and at a significant discount compared to other phones in the same spec range (iPhone 6+, Note 3). Comparing the Nexus 5 and the Nexus 6 to each other is comparing apples to oranges. They aren't even in the same class!
Look at the CPU, resolution, battery size, ram, pixel density, camera, network data download rates (150 Mbit/s), memory bandwidth (25.6 GB/s), size of the L1 cache....you get what you pay for, and you are getting far more then what anyone else is offering for similar phones.

It's running on 4.4W.2, which I believe has a few UI tweaks and battery improvement. UI is smooth 98% of the time unlike the initial reviews.
Any guesses on the release date of the S6 ?
Late Q1?

$279 for a watch?? ya no thanks.
Id rather just buy a good old fashioned watch (doesnt have to be expensive) and use my phone to do all the other functions this smartwatch says it accomplishes .

Yeah, latest updates since reviews have smoothened out the UI and increase battery life. Enjoy! Take pictures :P

Yup, I love dbrand. Toronto-based company (yay, Canada), their skins are cut perfectly, and their instruction videos are great. I picked up skins for Nexus 5, Xperia Z2, iPhone 5 and all have been superb.

I had the Aluminum frame pieces for my nexus 5 before I switched over the CF and red. Their cut is so precious, it's ridiculous. Best stuff in the market for sure.

So on Friday I'm finally retiring the blackberry and going for an iPhone 5s 32gb. Anyone got any opinions on this phone. I thought about an Android but I have a brother who is a master of fixing iPhones so I'm going with one of them.

You don't have to fix androids...... That's why he's a master at fixing iPhones, and not androids. Unless you want to have problems so he can fix them, but that doesn't make sense to me.

When you say "fix" do you mean "jailbreak"

Lol. He can fix Androids. He just is better at fixing iPhones (he has an iPhone5 himself). Not to mention I find I like using an iPhone way more then an android. Plus my whole family has them. And no I don't mean jailbreak. I mean if ever any case and something happens to my phone I can get my brother to fix it. I work in a steel shop and there are many places I could mangle my phone in here.

I think jaimie means physically fixing them. Nothing wrong with iPhone, it's all preference. I have both iPhone and Android.

Yes exactly. Thank you. And well truly my preference has been a blackberry for the last 5 years just because of the keyboard. Tried the keyboard on a S5 and didn't like it. I like the touch screen better on an iPhone. So I may as well go for it and hope for the best.

Well, I suggest you get an otter box defender for it, or some other case that is built strong like that. I've had mine for 2.75 years, and it's still good with an otterbox on it.

Google delayed android 5.0 Lollipops release from Nov. 3rd to sometime soon hopefully because of a Nexus 5 WIFI battery draining glitch. The only devices shipping with OEM 5.0 at the moment are the N6 and N9 tablet.
Lame.

One true but funny fact is that, Google never claimed to release OTA update from the beginning. It's all hearsay.

Installed some updates on my laptop last night once i shut it down.
This morning as the updates were installing the lid shut, stopping the laptop from installing the files.
Went to turn the laptop on and jsut a black screen.

So I have had my iPhone 5s for almost a week and I love it. Still kind of getting used to the whole touch screen keyboard but auto correct has helped me out on quite a few occasions. Fast, user friendly, and a whole lot of awesome apps.

Possibly. Not even getting to the "Windows shut down incorrectly" screen is usually trouble.

Hard to say...
If you have the installation media, run it but use the Repair option. It might fix the damaged o/s files.
Another option: Though the operating system is fubar'ed, you should be able to read the files on your hard drive ( add to an external drive enclosure & use another computer to recover the files). After that is done, reformat the drive and do a clean install of the o/s & apps.

Has anyone with a nexus 5 downloaded Android 5.0 Lollipop OTA? My GF has 4.4.4 currently and has the notification to download 5.0, but there have been several WIFI and battery issues affecting the Nexus 5 specifically.
Any input would be helpful especially if you have downloaded it. Would sideloading eliminate any issues?

Really? Android 5.0 is awesome on my Nexus 5.
edit: I would highly suggest not OTA from kitkat. Start fresh and don't carry over appdata.

Yeah, I just wiped my phone and installed Lollipop in bootloader. Backed everything up first.

Just got the Note3. Love it. Was thinking of getting a more reasonably sized phone but decided against it. The performance and battery life is significantly better than my note 1. I love the S Voice and Nav. When I clip it I my window holder thingy it's so easy to see/use.

I would suggest watching the reviews of the S5 from these two YouTube channels:
***MKBHD & Android Authority.***
You can decide for yourself whether you're interested in the phone. Also consider looking at the moto x (2014), and nexus 5 as other popular choices.

I love the nexus phones. I had a nexus s, then I "upgraded" to a galaxy s2x. Because of Samsung's bloatware, the newer phone (2 years newer) ran my apps slower than the old phone.

In that case grab a used nexus 4 or 5 for cheap. They can Still keep up with iPhones/ other Flagship phones at a fraction of the price.
