I just got into records. Kops has a very large selection and okay prices. Play de records on yonge is pricey and doesn't have much to pick from I find. I've been wanting to check out this place on Queen West. Forgot the name.

I actually have the Audio Technica LP-AT60 hooked up to some M-Audio AV40 and I'm happy with it. Didn't cost too much to setup as I just got into vinyl and it sounds great imo.

Haven't been to Play De Record since about 2003....
I do need to go back and check it out, but it's pretty small. Usually have the reggae I'm interested in
Maybe I'll walk to Kops tomorrow during my lunchtime, give it a looksee

Vinyl addiction was cured in the early 90's but not before accumulating more than 600 LPs, mainly Brit imports.
Currently reviewing the sound-proofing options before re-acquiring a turntable......

Nope. Fully detached. Mrs Wanker has a difference in opinion on the music and I much prefer to listen sans headphones. So soundproofing the man-cave (pretty much the entire basement) is a requirement.

+1 on anything pro-ject makes. Even the low end of their line is solid. They make a decent phono preamp too (which is a big deal for your listening pleasure... Dont skimp on the preamp).
I go back and forth on vinyl. Its an enjoyable listening experience but its anything but 'pure'. Thats not a bad thing but as an audio guy i get uber annoyed about people who talk about vinyl like its a 'superior' format.
It has a sound, its a nice sound, but accurate it ain't!
/soapbox
Anyway, pro-ject is the way to go unless you want to hunt for an old Dual (dual is making tables again in germany but they aren't nearly what they were quality wise).
Pro-ject and NAD are both making phono pres that won't break the bank and are good sounding. They also both make one with a USB out so if you like you can capture your collection for in car listening.
I've got a heavy 'audiophile' weight pressing of Bille Holiday's Velvet Mood that is an absolute joy to listen to. Those were they days when they really knew how to mix for the format.
If youre looking for a decent set of small speakers to listen on hit me up. Ive got a pair kicking around that sound great.
I for sure don't need any more speakers

Don't go with an audio technica table. It's direct drive which has the chance to transfer vibrations from the motor to the needle. The belt driven Project or Rega are the way to go IMO if you don't mind a fully manual table.
It may be direct drive but it has had amazing reviews
the Pro-Ject and the Rega are beautiful pieces

Great turntable for the money, there's a bunch of reviews online. Also blogto ranks the top record stores in Toronto if you want to check that out
right now currently 95% set on a Rega RP3 and a Pro-Ject Phono Box S pre-amp
I got into it for an odd reason - My Poppa (my moms dad) passed away some years ago, and I was given his record collection. (he didn't even have a turntable when he passed) I was interested to listen to his collection - so a buddy at work got me a DJ table, which promptly skipped and ruined the first record I played. I started to collect pieces of my setup, and it is literally a Frankenstein of a system.
Fast forward, I have some generic RCA "Auto Return" turn table (belt drive) that I bought from a hoarder that "collected" turntables, ($20 bucks) a new stylus/cartridge for it - Ortofon 2M Red. I realized quickly that the turntable itself has very little impact on sound past a certain point - Its mostly in the stylus/catridge - so I put the money in that instead.
Thankfully my Ghetto old A/V receiver is really good quality and actually has a Phono input. (Onkyo DS-777)
My Main Speakers are older than I am - They were the first speakers made by Canadian Mirage. There's no model, serial etc. It was "Mirage" - They're great sounding, rather large, but lack some low punch. They project amazingly and the treble is so silky and clear without being harsh. They are GREAT for acoustic music, as well as some less bass heavy music. The rubber was replaced in the main woofer about 5 years ago, because it was cracking. It took my Uncle (the previous owner) years to source a "worthy" replacement for the rubber surround.
because it lacks bass, I frequently fill it in with the subwoofer from a Logitech Z-5500 setup - Its a good powered unit - It really shines for movie playback, but it does the job at lower volumes for music - At higher volumes it gets a bit more "boomy" and less percise - But I'm not going to spend the money to replace it - After all, this started out just to listen to an old mans records.
Hamilton has a few record shops - Downtown I like Cheapies - Right on main, There's another on Wilson thats pretty good - they'll take their time and talk to you and give you recommendations. They both have decent amount of new and great condition used records.
I've only got a couple "new" records - Lumineers, (GREAT!) Postal Service 10 year Collector Edition Remastered (awesome), and Florence and the machine (horrible, the levels are all so high theres no quiet/loud - its all Just loud and noisy)
When I buy a record I think "can I sit down and just listen to this?" vs "background" music.
Oh, and I've listened to maybe HALF the records I received all those years ago - There's only so much opera and baroque music I can handle. *facepalm*

great story, great read!
i'm kinda similar, got into vinyl because of my pops too. quite a bit of variety of Jazz, Soul, broadway, and lots of opera too lol.
it intrigued me, but wasn't until i checked out TRAXX on yonge+college. I got an appreciation for records.
The cover art, the size, and the exclusives got me hooked. (pre napster era)
so as a teen my first job/work placement with my high school was working at Play De Record.
i thought id be my dj claim to fame... wrong! i had to actually work, stock records, clean, mop, catch thieves putting records up their shirt (yes it happens).
then managed to save enough for a used Technics 1200 and a belt drive jvc turntable.
my first and only set up. couldnt afford the records, so went to mp3s. (enter napster era)
but something about vinyl (as opposed to cassettes and cds) always felt rare and very special.
the white label records (usually bootleg + poor quality) were my favorite.
always had the wrong title, or misspelled artist name, but were months in advance of the actual record release.
i remember playing a record and a music exec walked in and got so pissed it was bootlegged, he took the record and walked out.
good times.
now i only go to HMV, even though its full off t-shirts and novelty coffee mugs, I always make time for that small vinyl section.
does the vinyl at HMV ever go on sale?

How are the dynamics on the newer records?
Is it the same as the CD or mp3 versions?
I really hate all the compression modern recordings tend to have... Just wondering if it's any different for vinyl.

^not likely. The compression is done during the recording/mixing process, not during the actual physical production.
You've touched on one of the differences between actual music and modern pop garbage

It's probably gonna still sound like crap. The master is USUALLY the same these days, though not always. Sometimes worse actually...
Excerpted from this article: http://productionadvice.co.uk/vinyl-mastering/
Now, it IS true that if the digital signal feeding the lathe is heavily clipped or limited, the record will almost certainly sound substantially worse than it would with a more dynamic source, because of extra distortion introduced when the stylus can’t track the excessively jagged groove. In some cases the lathe may even be damaged, and it’s for this reason that the average level (or “loudness”) determines how “hot” the record is cut, rather than the peak level.
But that means that with “hyper-compressed” loudness-war music there’s ironically plenty of unused headroom left above the average signal on the vinyl for peaks and transients, which is why some people choose to make more dynamic masters for vinyl release. And of course it’ll sound better as a result.
But it’s only necessary if the original master was stupid-loud in the first place.
Basically means that if the master was originally stupid loud (say most modern, nu-metal/pop punk/hard rock albums) they might actually print a separate master that is more dynamic, but for most music these days, they wont.
How are the dynamics on the newer records?
Is it the same as the CD or mp3 versions?

Yeh amazon has almost everything and with free shipping
A really good sounding record is the Lumineers. Not sure how it was recorded/transferred to master/vynil, but its really easy on the ears... However, do NOT use it to "test" as the tones have "rustic" qualities that make you think your turntable speed is fluctuating. It had me going mad, I thought my belt was starting to slip. My table doesn't have a strobe so I went so far as to play an MP3 at the same time to see if they went out of sync.
Checked out Sonic Boon tonight at their new location at 215 Spadina. Used to be the furniture store with the huge glass storefront windows...very cool store and lots of newer stuff at a reasonable price, but still alot because it's new
So a little update on my side of things...
Having my record collection of about 75 goodies brought up from Barbados next month...exciting.
Also have purchased another 150 records in the last 2 weeks....bling bling
Settled on the set-up for my living room..
Pro-ject xpression carbon classic. ...in white finish...
Gave up on the idea of a phono pre-amp and will upgrade my current pioneer receiver to a Yamaha R-S700 stereo receiver, which I'm hoping pair nicely with the Energy RC-70's
Future spot for the set up....will likely Ikea Hack the expedit to make it actually nice since it is pretty solid. Will add wood and stain it

I've got a freshly (professionally) rebuilt Yamaha CA-2010 Amp and a Yamaha YP-D6 turntable along with freshly rebuilt (by me) StudioLab Speakers (I can't remember which model, but they were top of the line when new). All have been in the family since new and all were purchased back in 1978 as a package together.
To go with this (vintage) setup I've got hundreds of records - motown, classical, classic rock, soul, disco/funk, rock&roll, etc. including (this) (http://www.amazon.com/The-Beatles-Stereo-Vinyl-Box/dp/B0041KVW2K/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1413404897&sr=8-2&keywords=beatles+vinyl+box+set) as well as some more modern releases such as the recent Daft Punk and Swedish House Mafia records.
Can post pictures when I'm back in Canada.

Someone help! Looking to finally finish getting a vinyl stereo setup over the winter. So far the only thing I have is a turntable. It's a vintage belt-drive Phillips (it's at my parents house currently so the I can't confirm the model).
I think the turntable has a built-in preamp but I'm not sure. What do I look for in terms of an amplifier for this thing? I think I'd prefer tube over solid state, but is it just a matter of picking up any old stereo amp with a phono input?

Tube amps give you a warmer sound than solid state but cost more. For that i would check out Audio Eden in Newmarket as they have great high end gear and very helpful guys as well. The turntable is just as important as everything else, so i would save up and find a gently used Technics Mk 2, Thorens or a Rega. For speakers, a good pair of Paradigm Titans V.1 is a great starting point. If Audio Eden still has them, Martin Logan's Motion 10 floor standers will not let you down. Hope this gives you some guidance and by all means avoid Best Buy/Future Shop. I can build better speakers than what they offer, IMO.

Thanks for the reply kreebs29 :)
I think I'm going to stick with the turntable I have for the time being; I know it was a top-of-the-line unit back when it was new, so it's not likely to be the weak point in my setup for a while as this project has a low cash priority.
I've also been considering buying a Tube HiFi kit and building it myself:
http://www.s5electronics.com/images/casefc4.jpg
But at ~$300 for the kit and enclosure, I'm not sure if it's that great of a deal (although they claim this amp compares favourably to tube amps costing $800 or more). At the same time, half the reason for buying a DIY amp kit is the fun of building it, haha.
As for speakers, I'll keep my eyes open for deals. I may have a free pair of Post Audio tower speakers (dual 12") that I can have. They are amazing, but huge at almost 4' tall.
My question is this: Is $300 too much to spend for an amplifier with these specs:
Input Impedance = 100k ohms
Output Impedance = 8 ohms
Output Power = Push Pull 8 Watts per Channel
Minimum Input for full output = .4 V
Frequency Response = 20 to 20,000 Hz
Total Harmonic Distortion at 1 Watt <1%
The circuit is a Class A amplifier

A DIY tube amp is a good idea. Ive seen those at the big HiFi show in Toronto (at the end of October/beginning of November every year). Those speakers you mention sound like white van types. Do some research on those because they are worst build quality in and out. Funds are always the top item to consider when putting together a system. Do what you can with the money you have available and by all means make sure that turntable is in top working condition first.

I looked them up and they seem like genuine speakers. The label on the front of them is the same as one found on white van speakers. If you are happy with them, grab them. Have a look at the surrounds on the woofers. If they are cracked, you will have to get that refoamed. There is a guy in barrie that can do that. Look him up in the barrie kijiji classifieds. I only offer you advice not as a set back but to save you from having to spend more money than you need to. Thats why it is important to make sure your TT is calibrated and balanced properly and the speakers are not faulty in anyway. See if someone you know has an amp with phono inputs to test out your gear before you shell out $300 for the amp. It is a long process with a tight budget but it is worth it in the end.

I'd just hate for their business to suffer or die because of the buying power of some gargantuan corporation. I wasn't aware that HMV sold all that much vinyl, but I'd suspect that to get much of the "good stuff" you'd have to go to an independent shop anyway.
I would prefer rifling through milk crates full of records to walking through the music section at Target is all.

Finding the time is the problem. I know of a couple on Queen. Got my Iron Maiden Back In Time 2 record set at a store there 3 years ago.
Went to Target to check it out just cuz
Selection is incredibly limited. If they were stocked they probably carried 7 different albums, so not worth checking out. At least that's at the store on Overlea. They only had 2 albums to choose from at the time

Noob question: I clean dust off my records with a Concepts antistatic record brush while its cueing. How should I clean my needle as well. Iodine? Can someone suggest a good product.
kreebs29

Kiewan don't use iodine. Get a Mr.Clean magic eraser cut a 1x1 inch square. Turn the player on without a record on it and drop the needle into the erasers white side. You need VERY STEADY HANDS to do this or you will break the tip of the needle. This will get the buildup off the needle.

I ended up picking up an amp and speakers from kijiji. The speakers are Polk, are older and in decent shape. The amp is in for repair at the moment because only the L channel was working. Time will tell if the amp will work or if it's garbage.
The turntable is one of these:
http://bilder.hifi-forum.de/medium/34737/514c_95663.jpg
The whole thing is on hold temporarily though, as I was laid off mid-december and have since switched careers. Disposable income does not exist at the moment. In the future I want to make a wall-mounted shelf for the amp and turntable as floor space is pretty limited.

Since this thread is about vinyl let me throw a question at you guys.
I've got an Audio Technica turntable from best buy that I've been using for the past 6 months but I really want to get my dads Dual up and running. Do you guys have any suggestions on where to take this thing to get a diagnosis as to what is up with it. I've changed the belt and cartridge to no avail.

There is a guy in St. Thomas called Dr. Dual. Give him a call and let him know what Model it is. Funny you mention Dual as I have a 504 and a CS 5000 that needs some TLC. There was a guy in T.O by the name of Klaus that used to repair Dual's as a living. Found him on Kijiji 3-4 years ago.

My dad and I looked at him before but he didn't feel comfortable sending it all the way out there. He would prefer someone more local in the GTA to work on it. I'll try to look up this Klaus guy

pics of final set up coming soon. Just need 1 more piece of furniture
Set up is almost complete, need another 3 tier on the right side. May also look into adding a subwoofer....not to pound but to just add a bit more depth to the overall sound.
Threw up a pair of Polk bookshelf speakers I had laying around, because why the hell not. Don't like the way the whole thing sounds when not driving the 2 towers in stereo, but will play around with the settings to see if I can get it to sound the way I want, if not the'll just be there for show.
The Onkyo receiver I thought had a "speaker B" option but it's not looking that way. Will read the manual to see if I can make it all work for me...adjust the gains etc. etc.
the main unit is actually from Ikea, since anything I was looking at "real" furniture was in the $3 grand range. This piece was almost $500 but it's very solid and sturdy.
So...the pics...

Mrs. loki came up with a brilliant idea to mount a little ledge above the record player on the wall that I can display the record that is playing at the time. Will find something suitable and use 3M tape
and because every system needs a heart and some warmth...
here's the receiver and loki's bar selection

Today I pulled the trigger on a new stereo amplifier and cd player
Picked up the Marantz PM8005 integrated amplifier and the Marantz CD6005 CD player/digital audio centre
Set up no longer looks as "clean" with the single turntable on display but the sound....the sound is fantastic and have really brought my RC-70s to life

the phono stage on this amplifier is also really great, which was key to my selection of this amplifier

I've just jumped on the bandwagon and picked up a Teac TN-300 in gloss black...really wanted one in cherry red, but they were sold out. I've only just unboxed it and put it in place, I still need to connect it to my HT.

I recently found out that my co-worker's husband is a carpenter so I asked her if she could him to build me a small wooden record rack like this:

Now I am just wondering if I should finish it with stain or lacquer or just leave it naked (it's made of pine).

It was a nice day today so I decided to check out Executive Stereo in the Avenue Road and Wilson Avenue area since they advertise selling new and used vinyl (plus I could also check out some of high end gear). I left the store with used copies of:

I also picked up a copy of this because I am into a Bossa Nova phase.

I own a rega rp3. It is fitted with a brand new hand assembled RB303 tonearm which is a direct descendent of the RB300 but changes the mounting and uses a cast alloy arm tube,Precision main bearing and a low vibration noise. I got mine from Bay bloor radio store in Toronto.
https://baybloorradio.com/audio-high-fidelity-hi-fi/turntables/turntable/rega-rp3-turntable
It is similar to Pro-Ject.I has a belt design where you need to switch manually between 33 rpm and 45 rpm. Instead of the usual resin/bakelite covering, the RP3 instead use uses a brace between the bearing and armboard to provide stiffness.Platter is made from glass which works rather well as a material for placing vinyl on.

I'll jump in to this thread a bit. My setup was primarily designed as a home theatre but we added the record player in there as well for a small but growing collection of vinyl. It's namely hardcore/metalcore "classics" with a few odds and ends that I wanted to enjoy on vinyl. I'll post up the records when I have some time.
But on to the important part; the set up:
Receiver: Pioneer VSX-1021 w/ AirPlay
Front Speakers: Polk Audio T600 Towers
Rear Speakers: Polk Audio T15 Bookshelves
Subwoofer: Polk Audio PSW10
Turntable: Audio Technica LP60USB
Typically I'll run it in stereo mode and only run the towers when vinyl listening but I also run the "extended stereo" mode from time to time which converts the 2 channel stereo audio into 4 channels to bring the bookshelf speakers into the mix; not as "true" a listening experience for some but it still sounds great to me.
I'll try and get some pictures even though the record player is inside a tv bench. I feel like it all turned out pretty well for my first home audio/video set up.
