View Full Version : Security System Question

Was thinking about getting a security system with a remote starter in future. I'm a bit of a stickler for security and privacy, and the one thing that scares me about the 2014 M3 GT is that the dash navigation system is in pretty plain view and could be tempting to someone to break a window and go for it. I'd rather have to replace a window and have the alarm scare the guy off, instead of wake up and find the window broken and the nav gone along with whatever else. So i have a couple questions for those that have purchased an after-market security system:
1) did you find that you had a lot of false car alarms that ended up mainly just pissing off all of your neighbours in the middle of the night? I don't want to be "that guy" on the street that once a week wakes everyone up at 4am with the alarm.
2) is there anything I should be concerned about with getting a good remote start/security system?
3) any recommendations for a remote starter/security combo that isn't Viper? I've heard horror stories with those systems.
Thanks for any info.

1. No
2. Get what you pay for, especially with installation.
3. Viper is working perfectly for me with remote start in my manual transmission.

Thanks for the info. I only mentioned the bit about Viper as apparently their customer support is horrendous. Glad to hear it worked for you!

Compustar is another well known well regarded brand.

1) never had my alarm go off on me except for a few cases but both were my fault because I hopped into the car before the system locked my car after remote starting.... as a result the car shuts off and beeps the alarm if the door opens before that.
2) Just dont go for a really cheapo brand. Viper or Compustar are the way to go. Ive had experience with a "codealarm" alarm system ( no remote starter) on a seperate vehicle and that has worked perfectly for 5+ years. Only complaint about that one is that the alarm is a bit too soft and not loud unless you are in a garage.
3) Compustar if you really dont want to go viper. My brother has a viper in his car and he had only minor issues with the alarm being tripped... something easily solved by adjusting the shock sensor.
Also go to lockdown security to get it installed properly. Had mine installed by them and have had no issues. Very helpful staff too.

I have had both Viper and CompuStar in 6 different vehicles.
Personally I prefer the viper. The system is more reliable in extreme conditions. I find the CompuStar to be predictable

If you're worried about the alarm going off due to "false alarms", you could just have the sensitivity adjusted.
When ever I get an aftermarket alarm installed, I usually ask for the sensitivity to be set to one of the lower settings. Reason being is that cars get bumped and dinged in parking lots more often than you realize. So I just wanted that alarm to go off if the doors/trunk/hood open, of it the glass breaks.

That would be a pretty good way to catch the ******* in mid-dent :p
