I bought these steel rims at Costco last year (2013).

Today, I found some rust on steel rims.

Should I remove rust and do touch-up painting?

Or Just leave it?

Rust is inevitable. who cares really..steelies were meant to rust. That's why they are cheap as **** to replace

Me personally I would sand them down and then paint them black... It's pretty simple to do and it will make them look way better

Wow those rims are low quality! The 16" OEM steelies that came with my 2010 are over 4.5 years old and do not look like that! Get what you pay for...

The oem oem steel rims are around $200 just like other places.... All steel rims will rust weather their the OEM or aftermarket.

I wonder if the OEM ones have better paint or something.

But do people spray something or put some coating on steel rims to keep the rust away?

Get some 3M 400 grit wet/dry sandpaper and go to work. Canadian tire sells a very good tall spray can of black rust paint with a picture of a big rig on the front. Can't remember the name.

To actually spend time sanding down and repainting steel wheels especially ones that are used for winters is a waste of time IMO.

At most you can take a wirewheel and knock off the lose stuff and coat it in some rust paint.

OP, that is hardly any rust and I would leave it alone.

This is why I run alloys. That, plus lighter and stronger :)

Get yourself some used mazda3 alloys from kijiji.

Rustoleum. Available at any Home Depot or Canadian Tire.

You're really wasting your time and money for something this minor though.

I would leave it. Steelies are the ugliest rims, why put lipstick on a pig?
