On cold mornings, like today (-18), my car starts no problem, but after about 3 minutes of letting it idle and having the RPM drop to about 1250, I'll put it into gear, and the engine sounds like a diesel. After about 3-4 minutes of driving the noise goes away, and when the engine is warm it sounds fine. Anyone else experience this? My mechanic said it's normal, and that mazda engines are known for not being the quietest, but I want to see if anyone else experiences this

Sort of like a helicopter noise?
Mine does it too lol ... Sounds fine once warmed up tho.

I'm trying to think of the best way to explain it... I wouldn't ssu as extreme as a helicopter noise... I think the best adjectives to describe it would be :Diesel-y, and clicky/ticky sounding. I think I know what you mean though

Well the ticking sound is just the injectors - I do agree hey are extremely loud on these cars.
Engine seems to perform just fine though so I don't worry.. Still got another 2 years on the power train as well.

Im thinking that it's just injector noise thats amplified from the cold

That would be my bet.
I garage my car which is also insulated. Left this morning and it was -6 degrees.
When I start the car up to drive home she is loud!
I would also just verify that you're using the correct weight oil so we can rule out valve slap.

completely normal... mazda has stated that they alter the fuel injector cycles to allow some unburnt fuel into the exhaust to light up the cat faster... it's for low emissions purposes

My 2010 2.0L Mazda 3 does the same thing on cold days. It's pretty normal for an engine to make more noise when warming up in cold weather. My buddy's Matrix sounds like a Mac truck when started on a cold day.

My 2012 2.0l sky does this as well, I've been told it's normal by many people including the dealer

That's good to know. My mom has a 2013 explorer that makes no noise at all when its cold, so that's what got me thinking something was wrong with my 2.5. Just goes to show how every engine is unique and different

2.5 is also a bulletproof MZR engine [emoji4]

I think you made a mistake and really meant to say 2.0L MZR! ;)
