View Full Version : Throttle body service and replacing spake plugs
I have a 2009 Mazda 3 with almost 100,000 km. The car runs flawlessly. The dealer recommended throttle body service at $245 plus tax. No reason was given. Is it really necessary? I rather leave the throttle body alone as there is no issue. Would a cleaner like "Red Line Fuel System Cleaner" clean the throttle body?
The sparks plugs are due for replacement at 120,000km. Is 100,000 km too soon for replacing spark plugs? Are wires replaced with spark plugs too? My driving has been 50/50 city and highway.

I suggest if your engine is running flawlessly; forget even touching the TB. I've never touched mine, I just added the RedLine periodically and I am near 255k km running flawlessly...(If it ain't broke, don't fix it).
Whether it "feels" like it needs it or not, I'd suggest changing out your plugs at 120k, but make sure to get the OEM iridium plugs for the same performance/longevity. They are costly but worth it.
No wires need replacing btw.

Did you check the dealership price first? If so, what was it?

Oops. Forgot the R. The 0000-18-L3Y2 (they have changed numbers now) are the ILTR5A-13G. $14.95 list each.
They used to be $28.95 each. Mazda had a price drop on them a few months back.

Hmm perhaps I missed the boat here. On pricing!
When i inquired on my 120k service they said plugs would run me 100 parts alone. Never actually did ask for a written quote.
After that, I sat down with Google and searched.. Revealing similar prices (20 ballpark)
Called jimmy and he said 20 a plug /25 install.
I'm actually really curious so I'm calling my local mazda up here in Barrie and going to ask tomorrow.
I apologize if I have misled anyone.. I was only speaking from my experience and when I heard of rock auto's price.. Couldn't believe it so though I'd share

$245 to clean the throttle body is a complete rip off! You are much better off going to see Jimmy for your maintenance.

Maybe not.if that prices includes plugs too. Plugs are advised 5 year OR and dont forget the OR 120 000km. If you dont do the mileage sip take them out and make sure they dont seize in your head after being in there for 6 years. And if its going to take you another year or two tk get to 120 000km. It'd be a good idea. Im sure ud be right pissed if.in a year or two they tell you the plugs seized in the head because you didnt replace them at the right time or km. So now youd be into big bucks!
Ill be doing my plugs give.or take at my next oil change. Should be almost right on my 5 year mark.. pay off the car.. change the plugs!

My car went into service June 2010 so this summer is 5 years and not 6. The owner's manual states every 120000km with no time frame.

The 6 years is for the op who posted. And 120 k divided by mazdas average 8k service. On 24k a year is.. bing bang boom. 5 years. Tust me.. i wont leave mine in longer then that. They are easy enough to replace and cheaper then a head. My old focus i used to do ever 2 years. Super over kill but it had a tune and i wanted it to be safe vs sorry.
So either change them. Or hope if u wait nothing gets seized in.
