Got this....first time in 8 years on here. I feel special lol.

Dear JonsMazda,

Someone has tried to log into your account on TorontoMazda3 with an incorrect password at least 5 times. This person has been prevented from attempting to login to your account for the next 15 minutes.

The person trying to log into your account had the following IP address: 61.232.6.164

All the best,
TorontoMazda3

I don't normally look up IP addresses so I don't know if there is a better way but it looks like it's coming from China. I used http://ip-lookup.net/index.php.

It's been happening to many members. Not just on our forum but on various VB forums across the world. People are trying to break into accounts to send spam PM's .
This is why having a strong password is important.

i got a spam pm about a government auction. I thought it was a new bot account but apparently they signed up in 2007. Then I logged into another car forum and had an identical PM from a user that signed up in 2006 but never posted.

Wonder if they're taking over dormant accounts

I know a list of about 10 million older account names, passwords, and emails was released a little while ago. would be easy to use that list on sites where users have gone dormant, and the accounts left active. also since so many people use the same password it's simple to get access to other places.

Your hacker is from an area somewhere North East of Beijing (between Latitude 35.21-39.92, and a longitude of 110.73-116.38).

They've already been blacklisted by someone in Germany.

If it's an ongoing issue... Best I can suggest is (if you speak Chinese)... Block your number, and give Give LV Quang a call at +86-10-51892111 and seek information on the IP.

Wonder if they're taking over dormant accountsMore likely they're taking over accounts with generic passwords... like password. And people who never used their accounts are likely to have weak passwords like that.

How do they even know if you have a weak password? Still impossible to guess a password

Sure.. They can look up every word in the dictionary for your password ..

Exactly. How many TM3 members do you think use one of the 5 most common passwords? More than a couple I'd say.

Exactly. And its a bot doing it so all they need to do is try logging in to every members account with the 5 most common passwords
20,847 members, 0.1% use the top 5 most common passwords = 20 hacked accounts and all the person has to do is point their bot to the forum URL. Presumably everyone didn't get the message because the IP range was blocked by the board or something.
Of course that is all just theoretical and made up numbers, but judging by what I'm hearing it sounds like that is more or less the case.

You should be able to figure out if your password is weak using common sense

"mazda" would be a pretty week password

"M@$da323" not so much

to phish other members via PM and to mine your info. there's a very good chance that if you're using a basic password for this forum, it'll be the same as the one used for your associated email or one you shared via PM.

There are so many 'better' places to do that
