I've owned my 2012 Sky for about two months now and have noticed that when I start the engine when it's cold (ie. sitting for a few hours or more) I get a strange noise that sounds like valve ticking and/or plastic on plastic chattering. This noise is present even in the 5-6 degree weather we've had so long as the engine is cold. When starting, the revs are slightly higher (1800-2000 on very cold days) however after a few seconds (10-15s) the revs drop to normal and the irregular noise disappears. The car has 54,000km on it and I did an oil change at 52,000km just to make sure it had the proper 0W20 synthetic oil as I was not sure if the previous owner/dealer used it (the car was bought at a Chrysler dealer).

Here is a video I took today of the noise. I had started the car and then decided to stop it so I could record the noise I hear. Notice the engine normalizes/drops to idle at around 0:32-0.33 seconds into the video. Exhaust is OEM (although it sounds kind of throaty in this vid). Defrost/AC is not actived and the HVAC system is off.

Maybe the cameras mic isn't picking up the noise properly but that sounds the same as my 2012 GX. Is the ticking sound constant or is it an irregular tempo. I'll go take a video of my car and see if you can hear it on mine

Your noise sounds different. For one, I believe I am hearing the low wooshing of a CAI and the valve noise stays constant. Keep in mind, my noise is only when I start the engine while cold. At 0:33 in the video the engine noise stops and idles normally/not loudly.

Does the noise change or do yuyou hear it happen if you cycle.on and off the ac?

No change when AC is run.

The skyactiv engines have an advanced start up system that forces more air into the engine to warm it up quicker. Rpms go high then calm down.
This sounds normal to me. Sometimes when you turn the car off it even makes a noise like it's exhaling with a slight hum.
All normal.

This. It's known that the Skyactiv engines have a unique and somewhat rough startup sound.

Talk to a client yesterday he dubbed it the 'hamster' noise. Gotta get the hamsters going first. Lol

Thanks for this post, I was wondering why my 2012 sounded so loud for about 30 seconds after a cold start. The sound never bothered me but it did annoy some of my passengers:P
