I have been getting a P0012 code since my 2.5 swap was completed. I am looking for advise on this problem. Could it be over retarding because it needs a remap or is something off or broken? I have advanced my timing as much as the crank position sensor will allow me to but the code keeps coming back no matter what adjustments i try. I am very confused by this and would like any insight you guys can think of. Thanks for the help.

Check all of your VVT components. You may have damaged a sensor/connector in the swap. It's either that or your timing has slipped so you need to re-time the cams and crank.
If you swapped the entire engine and PCM it should adjust your timing enough with the compensation tables/calculations so it doesn't through a code.
So either it's getting the funky data from a faulty sensor or the sensor is working normally and letting the PCM know that the timing is off in the engine.

i re-timed the whole motor already so the crank and cam timing is good and there lots of power until the vvt kicks in and then it through the code. I am still running the 2.0 pcm bc i did not want to have to re program everything and it works fine other than this problem. The miata guys do this swap all the time no issues and keep their 2.0 pcm. I'll have to inspect the actuator and oil pressure switch to see whats going on in there.

Sounds like a funky sensor or connection because if timing was off your normal car operation would be affected. I do not know much about the PCM compatibility... more of a mazdaspeed3 PCM guy lol. I could put the crank position sensor back to a normal position and start trouble shooting from there with all the sensors associated with VVT.

I'm going to take a wild guess.....reset ecu perhaps.

reset is already complete as to swap the motor the battery and pcm was out of the car for several days. I'm suspecting perhaps the the oil control valve for the vvt or the vvt actuator on the new motor could be flawed.
