Input on track/street wheel/tire sizes wanted

Hey guys, in trying to decide on wheel and tire setups for autocross, I'm starting to wonder whether there might be better options. Currently, I have:

16x8 with no tires for autox use
17x7 with 205/50/17 for street use

Given the increasing rarity of 225/50/16 tires, is there a better/more available option? A 205/55 tire seems too narrow for an 8" rim, or is it? Should I just run the 17s (currently wrapped in re760s) for both purposes and replace tires every 1-2 seasons?

Why not go 245/45-16?

Lowered 1.25", will that clear? I ran some 225/50s last season and had a slight rub at nearly full lock on the inside edge when I was lowered 1.6ish". Kinda discouraged me from going wider than 225.

Plus, I've read reviews that turn-in gets vague with such a wide tire. I'm new enough that I really don't know what that feels like but I know what it means.
