I have a 2005 Mazda 3 with ~155,000 KM which has very minimal rust. These are the steps I do to slow down the rust..perhaps this can work for other 1st Gens. .

Usual Rust Spots:

1)Rear centre light on the trunk, popped the light out dried the moisture, added anti seize around the seal. Could have probably used something better but that's what i had at the time. If it ruins the seal of the tail light, can easily get another from a scrap yard. Purpose is to slow the rust.

2)Rear wheel wheels, each time I transfer from summer to winter and winter to summer tires, I add grease to the back side lip

3)Rear door trim, rusting from inside out. I removed the weather stripping, held on with 5 clips each side. They all broke, therefore I bought new ones from West town Mazda in stock ~$16. In the holes of the clips I sprayed rust proofing spray to fill up the entire gap. See pictures below of what I found. The side a didn't take a picture off didn't have near as much rust as the one in the photos (passenger side).

i rubber coated pretty much any piece of body work underneath , some things will always rust . I changed my tranny oil pan and from the low life it has started to rust again . The way i see it , its a car anything can be fixed.
