hey guys i got a check engine light and scanned it with my scanner and this comes up p2404 something with the EVAP? i had the same sort of thing on my fathers van and all i did was put grease on the gas cap.
I put grease on the gas cap and the CEL still poped up after being cleared. i have 2 Mazda 3's and so i just swapped the gas caps to see if that would help but no it did not. it looks like the CEL pops up after being cleared every 3-5 start-ups.
if anyone knows more info about this or experienced the same problem could they comment. thanks

An evap leak code could be any part of the evap system. You might want to take it to a shop and see if they'll do a leak detection on it. COuld be a crack in the canister, bad vaccuum lines etc.

I think Mazda 3s have additional light on the instrument panel for the gas cap being loose.

oh really? didnt know that but i ruled that out because when i swapped gas caps with the other mazda i have no codes showed for the "faulty one that i thought was the problem". if it helps its been getting alot warmer here and looks like thats what causes the code to come on, every other startup. i dont overfill the tank anymore to see if thats the problem, but its difficult to rule things out.

It will not be temperature related. That is more likely to be coincidence. Either you have a leak somewhere, bad gas cap(already ruled out. UNLESS your filler neck is rotted where the gas cap seals. But I haven't seen this on a mazda.) pump is dead, ECU is cooked or you have a wiring issue. My guess would be wiring issue or dead pump. That's basing on what I see at work(not mazda dealer). To check for the leak you will require a smoke check machine.

thanks for your reply, and okay i want to check the evap system for a leak. ive seen people rig up their own devices like with a cigar or smoke machine to test for leaks. do you think this would be safe? if so where would i have to hook it up to find the potential leak. diagrams would be nice if possible :) thanks again
