Female mechanics are very hard to come by. What kind of questions do you have?

Ink & Iron is a body shop, not a mechanical shop.

Ink & Iron is a body shop, not a mechanical shop.

So you're saying they wouldn't know anything at all mechanical.

I'm considering a career in it and would like some opinions on it.

Ink & Iron is a body shop, not a mechanical shop.

They are mechanics as well who have gone through post secondary education in the field.

At least one of the ladies we met at that shop has a background in truck/heavy machinery repair

Well I stand corrected then. Typically a body shop is filled with Body and Paint folk not Licensed Mechanics...

I went to Centennial College for Automotive Technician there were quite a few women in the program. I'd recommend that school if you are considering the automotive field as they have an excellent reputation.

Do you happen to know if she has a handle on the forum? I can only direct message her on Instagram if she follows me.

Gyro Mazda has a female tech. Or at least they did about a year and a half ago when I had some warranty work done.

There's always been one female student in every year of my classes, and I've worked with one female tire buster.

I'll say this, my boss will never hire another woman to work any part of automotive ever again, especially in the shop.

Mechanics are generally dirty pigs (I would know, I'm one of them), and it's just a recipe for disaster. We had a girl at my old shop **** up huge, and we got fined huge because of her, yet we couldn't fire her because of it, for risk of, well, whatever reason.

I think that's really shitty that no other woman will have the opportunity to work at your shop because of the mistake of a previous employee. That's the kind of stereotypical nonsense women are tired if dealing with....it's not as if men never screw up...in fact my cars have never been worked on by a woman and I've had mechanics screw up badly....hmmm makes you retink the blame game.

It takes a tough chick to work in any male dominated industry...trust me I tackled working in the construction industry when I was in my 20s. Men being pigs has nothing to do with it because it's not like women don't know what they are going to be surrounded by...and as if we don't already deal with men being pigs on a regular every day basis...

As a kid all my dad ever wanted me to become was a tradesperson. He wanted me to understand there was no limitation to what I was capable of even though people would try to tell me otherwise.

Men are pigs in or out of the shop, what's the difference? If your willing to deal with it then why not be given the chance?

I know your trying to give advise but it does sound extremely negative when I'm trying to get information.

^^^ I agree. Just because your shop is full of perverts, that's no reason not to hire women. There are laws against sexual harassment and I'd love to see a few of those dirty pigs get fired.

On the other side of the coin, if she did something wrong by accident, then there's no grounds for termination. No worker in Ontario is allowed to be punished in ANY way just because they made a mistake at work.

Rather than fire people for mistakes, you and your employer should be working to train the person so they don't make the same mistakes again.
To be honest, dentinger , it sounds like you have a very crappy work environment.

"Wanted a few point of view" is rather a broad and open ended question. A more focused question will be more useful in getting information you are seeking.
For example, "Is there a salary discrepancy between males & females at your work location?"

you can google for more threads via "female mechanic site:reddit.com/r/mechanicadvice"

a few threads I found:
https://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicAdvice/comments/35b6ad/heavy_duty_mechanic_as_a_female_ab_can/
https://www.reddit.com/r/MechanicAdvice/comments/37iccm/becoming_an_auto_mechanic/

You can probably PM some of the people there for their take, or start a thread of your own.

Have you worked as a mechanic or been in such a work environment?
If yes and you're comfortable with it, go for it.
If not, try and get some exposure before committing a sizable portion of your youth to it.

Is there something in terms of exposure you would maybe suggest? I mean I have high around shops a great deal

I use to work as a pharmacy technician after school and in the summer.
It provided invaluable insight to the business side of running a pharmacy as well as meeting all kinds of....characters.
It also influenced my decision in not pursuing a career as a pharmacist as:
-hours were long and irregular should you freelance
-cannot compete price-wise with the big chains
-being an independent in the GTA area will mean long hours & razor thin profit margins

That being said, if you're able to find something equivalent as a mechanic...

I'll give you the same advice I was given, and the same advice I (we) give any other kid that walks in the door.

Turn around, and find a different career path.

You'll spend the first 3 years in school, spending all your money on tools. You'll spend the next 2-3 years getting the hang of flat rate, and still buying tools. I grew up in Ontario, and moved out west because the pay was terrible, and there isn't enough jobs to go around. I still have days where I work 7 am to 8 pm just to get jobs done or make the hours I want. However, smaller shops are usually hourly. Flat rate is nice, once you get the hang of it, but it takes a while.

But, if you're as stubborn as any of the other new mechanics, get into a shop, working on the floor. You'll probably start at the bottom, like everyone else. Cleaning, or busting tires/lube bay. From there, you will get signed on as an apprentice, and start logging hours. If you're lucky, a mechanic will take you under his wing, and you'll apprentice under him, and you know how the rest goes.

At least in Ontario, for schooling, you can do one day a week, so if finances are an issue, you don't need to take 8 weeks off and go on EI.

Have you considered becoming an aircraft mechanic instead? Way cooler, probably would do much more interesting work. Lots of female mechanics at my workplace. Would require you to be more flexible in terms of where you live though. I would imagine it would also be a much nicer working environment than in a garage.

Agreed ^^

I don't think I could ever do an office job, I'll always be working with my hands.

I will say this tho, air craft mechanics are seriously organized. At the end of a job, if 1 tool is missing, it needs to get found, or the aircraft doesn't go out

There's also Coach/Truck programs with apprenticeship already setup at Centennial if you want to stay in the automotive field.
