Hi all!

Three weeks ago my check engine light came on. I went to the mechanic, was told I had two error codes (not told which ones specifically) and that both pointed to the thermostat needing to be replaced. $430 later I have a new thermostat but my check engine light has come back on with three error codes. This time I insisted that they tell me what error codes are showing up, they are as follows:

P00B3
P0128
P2183

The mechanic says that the next step in this process would be to test each sensor individually and then replace whichever ones need replacing. So before I go and spend several hundred dollars more I figured I should ask on here to see what you great folks would suggest I do! My understanding is all these codes point to my engine being below operating temperature which means my fuel efficiency will be bad but no serious harm should come to my car.

If this was happening to you, what would you do?

Thanks in advance everyone!

First thing is to find a new mechanic. 430$ for a thermostat. that's a LOT considering the thermostat itself is 70$ from the dealer.

Almost everything you look up for those codes points to the thermostat or temp sensor. not sure on the price of the temp sensor but it doesn't look hard to replace. if you dont feel comfortable doing it yourself. i would suggest street performance. most ppl on here will recommend him.

Jesus! Anything over $200 for a thermostat is to much. I went to crappy tire bought a oem one for 50 bucks went home soend 5 minutes and put the new one in. Now for the sensor thats a super easy one to switch out its located on the top right corner of the engine just under the valve cover. Theres many videos on youtube on how to switch it. If you like you can join my facebook group and message me on there my name is carlos darren and i can help you out

Thanks for the advice guys. Now for an update! Two days ago I got in my car and turned it on and the check engine light had gone off. I have not done anything to it, just been driving like normal while I decided whether I wanted to put more money into it. Now the question is: Do I keep worrying about this or forget about it until the light comes back on?

By the way I have a 2010 Mazda 3s - GS, 2.5 L. Only 67,400 kms on it. Only 15,000 of those are by me.

Thanks again!

I would suggest you make sure the code is cleared from memory then check your coolant level and condition of the coolant. If the code comes back, I would suspect the temp sensor.

Will the code automatically clear from the memory after a few cycles? And I assume the only way to ensure it did clear is to have someone scan it again?

Thanks for all your help everyone!

It shouldn't clear out of memory if there is a real issue (not just a glitch) and yes best way is to clear it with a scanner.

There is also a PCM update for this code.
The thermostats are def known for sticking and need replacement... But... There is also a related pcm update that changes the acceptable temp range parameters. This is especially noted in our very cold weather!
