Hi all,

Recently got a 3 for the winter which was in a minor collision with a goose. Damage was to front right. Took out a piece of the bumper, headlight cracked and bent the hood.

When I picked it up, it has already been sitting for months... Had to replace a few things but the car is running great now except the power steering.

I was guessing that the pump is right where the collision happened, therefore the pump is damaged. But I took it out and there were no signs of damage, even the washer bottle In front of the pump was intact.

In any case, I got another pump when the seller gave me the car, so I just replaced it and bled the system with fresh fluids. After putting it back together, I still have no power steering.

I read the codes for the EHPAS system and it is telling me that battery voltage is low... Now the battery was not charging when i got the car, but have since corrected the charging issues.

Doing some reading, I found that it needs to be reprogrammed if the pump is replaced. I also took apart the pump and found the electronics inside to be fresh, no corrosion whatsoever.

In order to avoid reprogramming, I took the brains from the original pump and combined it with the hydraulic portion of the replacement pump.

Put the car back together and still no power steering... No codes this time. Are the power steering lines clogged by any chance? I read some tsb, but the criteria did not precisely meet my situation.

Any suggestions?

You need dealer to install "as built data" to the new pump. And that is considering you know it is the correct part

Well after trying to bleed air out of the system and just allowing the car to run for a bit longer, it seems as if the pump is working, however not to its full potential, or otherwise intermittently.

Luckily my moms car is identical (Same year and even colour) and hers runs great. I took the OBD reader to her car and while running monitored all the data, including:

- PS pump rpm
- PS pump aimed rpm
- Steering position rate of change
- Current at pump and at the rack

All of these check out to be identical to both my moms working car and my intermittent PS. This tells me that there is nothing wrong with the electronics or sensors and nothing needs to be reprogrammed.

Im going to try and button up the plastics under the car as I feel like the wheels are pushing up against those as well at full lock and take the car for a spin.

The only thing I feel is left is the power steering lines and the rack that could be faulty.

Thanks for the reply superchargeddx.
