Hey guys I've got a 2010 Mazda 3 hatch, Gx. 2.0L Manual 77,000kms
So randomly I started hearing this whining noise, like a very quiet turbo. It would only do it under hard ish accelerating. When at idle it there is nothing. Figured it was a squeaky v belt (serpentine or w.e) changed it over no problem. Start it and no noise. Gave it a bit of has to about 4k rpm and it started to make a grinding noise and would go away after it dropped below 4000. Changed out the tensioner pully. It sound like a tin can with a hole in it. The exhaust and heat shield are fine. It's annoying and loud as hell, and im sure it can't be good for it either. Halp!

check the ac pulley? there was a tsb for a noise from the ac pulley and it gets a spacer put in as it wasnt kicking it out all of the way. see if it makes a difference with the ac on or off.

No difference with a/c on and off. Checked all the pullys for play and nothing. Timing chain maybe? Almost sounds like a chain being dragged across tin or plastic. Only does it from 3.7k rpm to about 4.5k rpm
