View Full Version : Anyone have a TCM lying around for an 08 mazda 3?

Hey All,

It's been a while since I've been on. Last week my wife's car suddenly had a check engine light and a the AT light turn on. The dash when shift gears does not indicate which gear the shifter is in. Plus when shifting from Park to Reverse, it makes a big jerk. The code was U0101 - Failure to connect with TCM.

So after doing tons of reasearch and asking around, it highly looks the the issue has to do with a faulty TCM (Transmission Control Module) on her 08 Mazda. Now I'm just 95% sure that this is culprit and if i fix this, it should be fine again but again the TCM is pretty pricey even at the affiliated dealers with the discount.

So it's just a long shot if anyone has one lying around that I can try to put into her car to test it before I purchase it. I'm more than willing to pay you something as it's better than the $170 something that Mazda of Brampton quoted me for diagnosing the problem...

Let me know

Thanks
Ben

2.0 or 2.3? I have a couple 2.0 transmissions laying around my shop, not sure if it's the same as a 2.3L or not.

Yup I tried a few junk yards. Apparently this part is like $500 used lol. I can get a brand new one for this price from a friend.

Its for a 2.3L. I'm not sure if it is the same but I would assume so since they should both be 5spd transmission but im just guessing. In anyways, its ok. I just asked my friend to get it for me. I'm going to just take the risk and try it as my wife's car has been parked for a week and driving her to/from work is a pain lol.

Thanks you all. I'll update this thread if the TCM is the culprit and I really hope so

Hello All,

Just to update, I changed the TCM and it is working perfectly so I'm pretty happy. The removal and install is quite easy as this is located right under the battery box for the gen1 2.3L. Not sure about the 2.0L.

In any case, this video was what I used to see how remove everything and the whole job took about an hour for me and my brother in law to do

i'm now having this issue with my M3 2.3. i've visited a few yards and no luck. they mostly have the 2.0 models with the 4-spd auto trans which is not the same at all as they don't even seem to a visible tcm. where did you get your tcm from?

Another member messaged me last week regarding this this too. Must be a common thing for TCMs to go at this time of the year lol jks.

I would visit one of our affiliated dealers on the forum. They offer 20% off parts and you can install it yourself based on the youtube link that I posted on post #5 as it is not very hard.

Good luck!

Yeah it's weird man. Already called a couple of salvage yards and they're going for $350++. That's a lot of money for a computer the size of my hand lol. Thanks though! I'll call up our dealers. Cheers man.

Another option could be a junk yard. It is of course a risk as you don't know the condition of the item, but I'm sure it's a hell of a lot cheaper.

I went to Dom’s Auto and no luck either. I called and they basically said they take out that part cos they know how much it costs :(

Ah damn, that's tough. Maybe other yards may not be the same. Try some that are a little out of the GTA; smaller ones where things are a little more lenient.

Yep :) I'm planning to go to a west end yard this weekend. Wish me luck!
