Hello everyone, I just installed my winter tires a couple days ago and after that i have noticed a brake grinding / rubbing noise. I didn"t have any issues when running my summer wheels, as soon as i switched over the noise appeared. Was mostly coming from the drivers side and alittle from passenger. When turning the noise only very slightly increases to the side with all the weight, but don't think its a wheel bearing as there is no humming or roaring. Also when i just slightly apply the brake pedal not even 1cm in to where the brakes dont even slow down the car, the noise completely goes away!! Under normal braking there is also no vibrations from the rotors. My car has no dust shields in the front so thats not an issue.

I jacked up the car differently that time (nascar style, all left then all right side), dont think that would of caused any damage to any components.

Winter tires are 1 year old and like new, no rubbing with the tires or rims as they are oem. Brake pads and rotors are only 15,000kms old and have 80% of life left.

Jacked up the front end today all at once from the front subframe and put the car on jack stands. Rotated the wheels freely and noticed the grinding noise. There was NO top to bottom play in the wheel bearings by me checking with the wheel or side to side.
Pulled the wheels to check the brakes and rotors. They have been maintained (Greased and antisiezed) only about 5 months ago. Everything looked good, so i lightly block sanded the pads down to remove the glaze and re-greased the slider pins and antiseized all metal on metal parts.

Lowered the car down and torqued the wheels to 80ft lbs. Took it on a test drive and the noise was worse. LOL:chuckle. Now it was coming mostly from the Passenger side. Can hear the noise alot inside the cabin from 10-50km/HR. Only drove around about 15 km since the winter tire changeover. The noise is really bugging me. I am very mechanically inclined but this one has me stumped:bang. Anyone got any ideas?

Play or not, the only logical answer seems to be wheel bearings. Perhaps they were on their way out and doing a tire switch over disturbed the races? I'm honestly as stumped as you, given the good troubleshooting you've done thus far. I'd pull the tires, calipers and rotors off and run the car in the air to see if the noise is still there. Isolate 100% that it's not the brakes and/or bearings. It's about the only thing you can do.

Is it like a squealing/scrapping sound? If so, perhaps a small rock got between the metal brake shield and the back of the rotor. If so, the simplest thing to do is to go backwards 15 feet, then forward, back and forth, and most often it will pop out and noise-be-gone.

Have had this on probably 5 vehicles at different times, and each time that worked to get it out.

Best of luck getting your issue resolved.

Three other things to check:

1. You might have bent the backing plate when putting the wheels on
2. Rotor might not be sitting flat

Put the summer tires back on and see if the noise is still there.

I bet wheels are wrong offset and rubbing on the calipers

That sounds like a good idea. Gonna give that a try this weekend with the tires and without the brakes and rotors to isolate the problem.

Ok guys the wheels are the right offset and i have an 06 so it doesnt have backing/ dust plates in the front.

Anyone know if this can be caused by a siezed caliper piston? When i just lightly tap on the brake pedal and during normal braking the noise completley goes away.

It could very well be that, too.
