View Full Version : Gas tank release stuck

Stopped at a gas station last night to fill up, and the fuel door would not open.
The release lever would not budge.

This morning I used a credit card to ensure no ice was inside the door itself, also used some hot water and was able to run the card around without issue.

At this point I think the release lever might be seized. Going to try picking up some jig a loo grease to see if that helps.

Any other ideas?

I keep things lubed with a spray can of Krown T40. Use it for touch ups as well after my annual Krown'ing.

Any chance the cable has water frozen in it? (Recent car wash?)

Bring it to a warm indoor garage. Frozen, it may be.

Any chance the cable has water frozen in it? (Recent car wash?)No recent wash but still possible it's frozen. I park outside, and there has been build up under the car. Perhaps ice melted from driving and then re-froze.
I tried spray jigg a loo around the release but no change.
I read there is an emergency release that can be accessed from the hatch panel. But I can't seem to find an image of the release and can not see in between the panels.

On the 08 hatch there is a removable panel to get to the bolts for the filer door. For sedans the side panel on the trunk needs to be pulled back. Very likely also applies to later generations.... I only have the 08 repair manual.

I checked the 2010 Speed 3 Workshop Manual but it doesn't really explain how to access from the panel on the inside of the hatch. Can you post the info from the 08 Hatch ?

I also wonder if I can get a card between the door and the lift spring, could I manually depress the spring and open the door ?

Quick update. I lost patience messing around, had the car towed to Street Performance. Jimmy confirmed the cable was frozen, after leaing the car in his shop for the day the cable released. To prevent the issue from re-occurring, Jimmy slightly modified the fuel door, so it opens/closes via a light touch on the door itself.
